In the early \u201990s, the Dead themselves began officially releasing archival live recordings \u2014\u00a0and that operation has steadily grown into a commercial juggernaut, helping the band to set chart records 30 years after frontman Jerry Garcia\u2018s death and 60 years after its formation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNow, Deadheads have another way to enjoy the band\u2019s extensive live catalog. This includes roughly 300 concerts,\u00a0including many previously available only as physical-only releases, like the 58-volume quarterly Dave\u2019s Picks series, launched in 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPlay Dead subscriptions will cost $9.99\/month or $99.99\/year, with other pricing options available for existing nugs subscribers and new customers interested in bundling Play Dead and nugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRhino\u2019s robust physical release schedule for Dead recordings will continue apace, with all new releases also appearing on Play Dead, but the service will also offer two new vault releases every week in perpetuity \u2014\u00a0amounting to an exponential increase in the volume of new archival releases available to Deadheads. Twenty of these previously unreleased vault recordings have gone live on Play Dead to accompany its launch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis is my life\u2019s work,\u201d says nugs founder\/CEO <strong>Brad Serling<\/strong>, a Deadhead who launched the platform in the late \u201990s. \u201cI was born to do this. So here we are \u2014 it\u2019s finally happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s been a long time coming for Serling, who the Dead hired in 2000 to do a version of this. That initiative, dubbed Project Bandwagon, would have created an online distribution channel for the music of a handful of acts \u2014\u00a0including, possibly, the Dead, Dave Matthews Band, Phish and Pearl Jam \u2014 along with tie-ins for merch and ticketing. In January 2020, at Dead &amp; Company\u2019s Mexican destination festival Playing In The Sand, Serling and Pinkus began to outline what creating such a platform would look like in practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSo, a Deadhead might ask, what\u2019s taken so long? \u201cWhat we\u2019re embarking on now is the largest tape transfer project in the history of rock and roll, as far as I know, at least for any single band,\u201d Serling says. The Dead\u2019s vault contains a vast assortment of tapes \u2014 multitracks, reel-to-reels, DATs, anywhere from two to a dozen for a given show \u2014 that all require careful digitization. Bootlegs for many of the 2,300-plus concerts the Grateful Dead performed exist, of course, and resourceful Deadheads know where to find them. Beyond mastering unreleased recordings for future Play Dead vault releases, the Dead\u2019s audio team, led by mastering pro <strong>David Glasser<\/strong>, has gone back through previous archival releases, optimizing them for the fidelity enabled by streaming. Even for listeners who have worn out their copies of the CD-only <em>Dave\u2019s Picks<\/em>, those recordings should sound better on Play Dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe music\u2019s all over the place on the internet, but it\u2019s not in good enough quality, and it\u2019s not presented in a thoughtful way,\u201d Pinkus says. \u201cPlay Dead is going to give it to you in high-res, sounding better than you\u2019ll find it anywhere on the internet, and it\u2019s going to be in a logical, thoughtful, fun way to listen to and interact with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHigh-resolution audio isn\u2019t all Play Dead has to offer. The platform will support the creation and sharing of playlists, along with curated selections by Lemieux and other venerable Deadheads. Lemieux raves about the app\u2019s interface, which helps to make a daunting amount of data navigable. And to them, Play Dead realizes a long-held dream of many Deadheads. \u201cThis is really the opening of the vault,\u201d Lemieux says. \u201cUltimately, we don\u2019t really have an interest in stuff sitting on shelves.
