Volkswagen has listened to all of our collective grumbling about its cars and is doing something about it. This is the new ID.3 Neo \u2013 a heavy upgrade to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/volkswagen\/id3-hatchback\/\">the car that kicked off VW\u2019s electrification push in 2019<\/a>. You know \u2013 the one that quickly became a significant headache for the brand due to its delayed launch, dodgy interior quality and utterly cack software integration.<\/p>\n<p>The new ID.3 Neo aims to rectify all that and is the first tangible result from the brand\u2019s \u2018True Volkswagen\u2019 scheme \u2013 a company-wide program designed to course-correct it and get it back to making cars people want to buy again. That project was largely spearheaded by current brand CEO Thomas Sch\u00e4fer, who says \u2013 when he took the job in 2022 \u2013 he could \u2018immediately see where things were not working.\u2019 Ouch.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The plan, says Sch\u00e4fer, is designed to slowly nudge VW back to its heartland of making mainstream cars that function properly and build ones that people actually like. \u2018It\u2019s been quite a journey,\u2019 he says. \u2018Geopolitics, supply chains, competition and so on. But, more importantly, we had to change ourselves and create a new mindset. But a brand doesn\u2019t change overnight \u2013 it\u2019s through small decisions and through things we do every day.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>This new ID.3 Neo, then, is the start of something greater.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It doesn\u2019t look much different\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Well\u2026 quite. Here we are talking about some grand scheme to fix an entire brand and the first real production car that\u2019s come out of it barely looks like it\u2019s changed on the outside.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few changes, mind, but they are small; a new front end includes a fresh (optionally backlit) panel that stretches the full width of the car, bringing the Neo into line with other recent Volkswagen models. The bumpers have been redesigned front and back, there are new wheel designs and the tailgate is painted to match the body colour \u2013 instead of always being painted black as before.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259407\/480x0\/id3-neo-22.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-259411\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259407\/480x0\/id3-neo-22.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259407\/720x0\/id3-neo-22.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259407\/1040x0\/id3-neo-22.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>But the exterior wasn\u2019t really the focus for this \u2018Neo\u2019 version of the ID.3; it\u2019s all about the new interior. The Neo has effectively copied the ID. Polo\u2019s homework here, carrying across almost all that new supermini\u2019s interior design details and applying them to a larger car.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2018The idea was to bring back this living room feeling, a warmer feeling for the interior,\u2019 interior designer Taras Gorbachev tells us. \u2018For the ID.3, we wanted to move away from this curvy, more provocative design and we got a lot of feedback from customers on things that they wanted to have back.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The new interior concept starts with a fresh steering wheel with entirely physical controls \u2013 no haptic black panels that have dual touch-sensitive functions or actions that can get knocked on by mistake. They have a knurled edge to them and some of them work a like toggles, allowing you to press down or lift some of the switches for temperature control or fan speed. \u2018When it\u2019s just a slider, it doesn\u2019t give you any sense of quality,\u2019 says Gorbachev.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a physical dial for volume control and four individual window switches on the driver\u2019s door for each window \u2013 not the horribly fiddly two-switch setup that required pressing another haptic button marked \u2018REAR\u2019 as before.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259407\/480x0\/id3-neo-26.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-259415\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259407\/480x0\/id3-neo-26.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259407\/720x0\/id3-neo-26.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259407\/1040x0\/id3-neo-26.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Other interior details include lightly redesigned UX for the infotainment system, as VW\u2019s head of development Kai Gr\u00fcnitz (understatedly) admits that software feedback \u2018could have been more positive.\u2019 The driver\u2019s instruments are now larger so more info can be displayed in front of you and VW has also included the \u2018retro\u2019 design first seen on the ID. Polo here, allowing you to toggle some properly old-school-looking instruments and some twee graphics on the central infotainment screen. A new electric motor labelled APP350 (the former was named APP310; the name stands for Axial Parallel Position and the number is the torque figure in newton metres) claims higher efficiency via a 38 per cent reduction in heat losses. <\/p>\n<p>That new e-motor is available in three states of tune: 168bhp (linked to a 50kWh battery), 188bhp (with a 58kWh battery) and 228bhp (which uses a 79kWh battery). VW claims up to 259, 307 or 391 miles respectively from those battery\/motor choices.
