not deceiving you \u2013 this really is a soft-top version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/porsche\/911-992-2-gt3\/\">Porsche\u2019s hardcore 911 GT3<\/a>, a car likely to split opinion like no other recent 911 given the GT3\u2019s road racer roots.<\/p>\n<p>For potentially apoplectic purists, Porsche GT boss Andreas Preuninger offers a few words of reassurance on the new 911 GT3 S\/C. \u2018This is not a 911 cabriolet with the GT3 engine in it\u2026 it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/porsche\/992-2-911-gt3-touring\/\">GT3 Touring<\/a> or an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/porsche\/911-st\/\">S\/T<\/a> without a roof,\u2019 he tells CAR at a studio preview in Stuttgart.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Indeed, only the S\/C\u2019s aluminium rear three-quarter panel and rear deck lid carry over from the standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/porsche\/911-992-2-cabriolet\/\">911 Cabriolet<\/a>. Everything else \u2013 drivetrain, chassis and interior \u2013 is replaced with full GT3 hardware, plus selected lightweight parts from the 911 S\/T.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259758\/480x0\/911-gt3-sc-16.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-259813\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259758\/480x0\/911-gt3-sc-16.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259758\/720x0\/911-gt3-sc-16.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259758\/1040x0\/911-gt3-sc-16.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>A 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six revs to 9000rpm and sends 503bhp to the rear wheels alone. Weight is sub-1500kg despite the extra heft convertibles always introduce. And the S\/C is so structurally sound that even Preuninger says he can\u2019t feel the difference compared with the coupe. Did we mention the S\/C is a manual-only? Porsche spins it as a pure driver\u2019s machine to enjoy the open road, with the manual all part of that \u2013\u00a0but there\u2019s a little more nuance to it than that, which we\u2019ll come to<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hasn\u2019t Porsche basically done this before?<\/h2>\n<p>In spirit, yes. The previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-news\/first-official-pictures\/porsche\/porsche-911-speedster-revealed-in-pictures-prices-specs-delivery-date\/\">911 Speedster<\/a> was essentially a 991 GT3 convertible in all but name, but paired a cut-down windscreen with a fiddly manual roof in the name of purity \u2013 and in deference to the 356 Speedster. Porsche says customers not unreasonably\u00a0asked for the convenience of an electric roof. And because a regular 911 fabric roof has to integrate with the standard windscreen frame, it\u2019s no longer a Speedster. The S\/C bit? Well\u2026 Porsche isn\u2019t officially saying, but we\u2019ll guess it stands for Sport Convertible.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259758\/480x0\/911-gt3-sc-22.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-259768\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259758\/480x0\/911-gt3-sc-22.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259758\/720x0\/911-gt3-sc-22.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/259758\/1040x0\/911-gt3-sc-22.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The roof itself opens in around 12 seconds at up to 32mph, and gets new magnesium flat bows under the fabric for a tauter, more precise appearance when closed. It also integrates more cleanly than the Speedster\u2019s twin-hump rear deck, giving the car a more cohesive GT3-derived stance. Plus, the (optional) black windscreen frame visually hot-rods it too.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It sounds pretty light for a convertible\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>The official 1497kg is only a small increase over a manual GT3 Touring, depending on spec, and nowhere near the 90kg or so penalty you\u2019d expect. Pricey, yes, but the difference is accounted for by the usual premium for a convertible, the lightweight parts for which GT3 coupe owners typically pay a large premium, and the S\/T wings and doors they cannot buy.
