She is actively keeping an eye out for the elusive \u201ctea guy\u201d from whom she often purchases homemade concoctions and has subsequently befriended as a result of her frequenting the Bushwick hub. Her trademark brunette bob and baby bangs are in perfect tact, the relics of a signature silver manicure glinting. She seems to know everyone in her Brooklyn enclave: friends materialize midsentence, strangers become acquaintances, acquaintances become lore. Her cadence is shaped by poetic eloquence and her humor is meme-ably sharp, constantly flickering between confession and punchline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s a lot of mystique to me. The game being the Internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To the less chronically online, it\u2019s difficult to pinpoint what exactly Thomas does, because she is renowned for her mere existence. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@dumbmackenzie\/video\/7298416312932453675\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">reads her melodramatic teenage journal entries<\/a> on TikTok. She <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/evilmackenzie\/status\/1980802336390816092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">dances alone in photobooth videos<\/a>. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@dumbmackenzie\/video\/7506671261595077919\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">lip-syncs to music<\/a> on city streets with a 4-foot selfie stick. She <a href=\"https:\/\/iwilldowhateveriwant.substack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">waxes poetic on her own introspections<\/a> via Substack. And <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/evilmackenzie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">she tweets<\/a>\u2026 a <em>lot<\/em>. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"rs0\"><p>\u201cThe most ever present forces in the universe are God, air, and the Internet,\u201d says Thomas without hesitation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Along the way, the 27-year-old creator has racked up hundreds of thousands of followers across platforms and generated a fan base that projects its own fragmented experiences of girlhood onto her, admiring her uninhibited humanity online.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width:550px\" class=\"sWr iGR vrU\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"XUu RK-\">\n<blockquote data-tweetid=\"2042964631757451564\">\n<div class=\"Jen\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/evilmackenzie\/status\/2042964631757451564\" title=\"View on X\" class=\"y9v W3A\"><i class=\"icx b18\"><\/i><\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Is it performance art? No. Is it TikTok diarism? Well, not exactly that, either. From her first introduction at 8 years old to YouTube from a \u201cscene babysitter,\u201d to viral TikToks documenting her Goodwill employee era in L.A. and the gradual accumulation of a distinctly self-authored online mythology, Thomas has resisted clean categorization aided by her instinctual documentation. The varied content that persists is underscored by pure wit, delivered with the ease of someone who has been narrating her own life long before anyone else was watching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had the urge to perform my whole life,\u201d says Thomas. \u201cI was really lonely as a younger person, and I had nobody to have inside jokes with, so I started having inside jokes with myself and posting them online. However, unlike the Dasha Nekrasova and Cat Marnell of yesteryear, Thomas exists in a looser Internet ecosystem shaped less by subculture than by proximity, overlap, and shared circles. Her world is populated by frequent collaborators and friends like burgeoning photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/taryn._\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">Taryn Segal<\/a> and rising comedian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/wolkmindvirus2\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">Ivy Wolk<\/a>, forming an intentional coterie that moves together between performance, digital footprint, and their New York orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Her frequent collaborations with friends bleed seamlessly into her own work, collapsing the distance between life and output. This same instinct to document, revisit, and rework inspired her one-woman show, <em>I Said What I Said<\/em>. Entirely self-funded and staged across independent theaters \u2014 most recently performed earlier this month at A.R.T.\/New York Theatres in Hell\u2019s Kitchen \u2014 the writer-performer sits behind a desk in front of a screen projecting her 2025 Twitter feed, a staging that eagle-eyed Internet acolytes later claimed was echoed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DXCUH_IjFtA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">Justin Bieber\u2019s recent Coachella performance<\/a>. (For the record, Thomas estimates the odds he copied her as \u201cclose to zero&#8230; not zero, but close.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>In her performance, Thomas reads her Twitter feed month by month, peppered with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/evilmackenzie\/status\/1896261984716497023?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">memes for comic relief<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rilokileybot\/status\/1979378661460512939?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">retweeted lyrics<\/a> from her favorite indie-rock band Rilo Kiley, and pairs each month with an essay recited like a monologue. (Except, that is, for March, her least favorite month. At that time, she opens the floor to audience questions). For a generation notorious for fractured attention spans, the durational format becomes part of the bit. My whole body of work is just me looking for a full-circle moment so I can be like, \u2018OK, let\u2019s move on,\u2019\u201d says Thomas. \u201cIn places where people find cringe within themselves is where I find catharsis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For those who missed her string of seven showings, it may be a minute before it resurfaces in the flesh \u2014 unless you\u2019re willing to scroll back far enough on her Twitter feed. \u201c[The show] takes a crazy emotional toll on me,\u201d Thomas says of its difficulty to perform. \u201cI hold nothing back, and I just need time away from it for a little bit.\u201d She is open about the conditions of return: She would revisit the show again, but only if someone is willing to pay her to do it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:66.3194%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/4\/13\/dd4372b5\/mackenzie9.jpeg?w=414&amp;h=275&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=focalpoint&amp;fp-x=0.5442&amp;fp-y=0.2538&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\"><cite class=\"hW6\">Courtesy of Taryn Segal<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>But fret not: You haven\u2019t seen the last of Thomas yet. She teases a short film in the works, formulated by four years of videos recorded on her laptop (stored to her desktop, with no backups on an external hard drive), as well as a potential memoir (\u201cI could never write anything fake,\u201d she says). Her following continues to grow in tandem with her insistence on staying unpolished, drawn less to gloss than to the feeling of something unfiltered and emotionally legible. For now, she says she will keep funding her own practice the way she always has \u2014 moonlighting as an influencer when she can, collaborating with friends, and folding whatever she\u2019s living through back into the work as it happens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure if the Internet didn\u2019t exist, I\u2019d be doing this in some other way, but it\u2019s my weapon,\u201d says Thomas. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the only consistent things in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That, and Maria Hernandez Park, where we spot her friends on a nearby picnic blanket. They run over and confirm they received her Partiful invite to an upcoming night out.
