Both sets were filled exclusively with <em>SWAG <\/em>and<em> SWAG II <\/em>tracks, not only helping Bieber get a feel for the new material live but also \u2013 and perhaps more importantly \u2013 bringing him back to the stage for the first time in four years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNow, the desert is a different type of stage entirely, especially compared to 500-capacity venues, but Bieber didn\u2019t treat it as such. Instead, he managed to make a polo field of strangers feel like a late-night hang among close friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe set design was minimal, featuring only a fluid, cocoon-like structure on which Bieber could walk around, lay down and at times even shrink into \u2014 equal parts playground and safe space.\u00a0His only prop: a laptop (but more on that later).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBieber started strong with the boundary-setting \u201cAll I Can Take,\u201d which also opens <em>SWAG<\/em> and serves the same purpose here: to remind himself and his fans that he will and always has given all that he can at any given moment. And it hasn\u2019t been easy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile Bieber openly chronicles such ups and downs across <em>SWAG and SWAG II<\/em>, hearing these albums live en masse crystallized their message. Together, they are a testament to his near two-decades of working out his identity, faith and purpose in the public eye. So much so that he spent the first 50 minutes of his set in the swagverse (save for a brief swerve into \u201cStay\u201d featuring a surprise appearance from The Kid Laroi). Early set standouts included \u201cSpeed Demon\u201d about keeping a tight inner circle and \u201cgetting better by the second\u201d for it; \u201cGo Baby,\u201d his ode to wife and mogul Hailey Bieber; and \u201cWalking Away,\u201d his commitment to their family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNext up: an acoustic portion, with Bieber seated in the center of an extended walkway accompanied by Carter Lang and Dylan Wiggins. The trio performed songs including \u201cGlory Voice Memo,\u201d \u201cZuma House\u201d and an emotional and extended \u201cEverything Hallelujah\u201d with Bieber including the new line, \u201cCoachalla, hallelujah.\u201d (Tears coated his eyes when he sang, \u201cHailey, baby, hallelujah\/ Baby Jack, hallelujah.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt was a quiet yet overwhelming moment of gratitude, and proved that Bieber\u2019s biggest strength \u2013 in addition to being one of the greatest and perhaps most effortless vocalists of this generation \u2013 lies in those softer moments, when he wields his star power to make thousands of fans fall silent to hear his prayers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cTonight is such a special night,\u201d Bieber said to the crowd, concluding the acoustic section. \u201cBut I feel like we gotta take you guys on a bit of a journey\u2026\u201d he continued. And oh <em>baby<\/em>, did he.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor the next 25 minutes, Bieber essentially embodied a millennial iPad kid \u2013 meaning, he sat at his laptop on YouTube. Before inevitably falling down an internet hole, pulling up once-viral clips such as \u201cDeez Nuts\u201d and \u201cDouble Rainbow\u201d (you either know \u2018em or you don\u2019t), he dove into the archive. He played clip after clip of his greatest career-launching hits, singing along to snippets of \u201cBaby, \u201cThat Should Be Me\u201d and \u201cNever Say Never,\u201d among others, as their music videos filled the screen behind him. Lil Bieber then threw it all the way back to Baby Bieber, playing the video that launched his career: his famous \u201cWith You\u201d cover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt was a clever and authentic (albeit, time-consuming) way into his past, a reclaiming that celebrates the little kid he was while still aligning with the man he is today. Plus, it was perhaps the most efficient way to power through 12 songs that, truthfully, may have otherwise felt out of place in the set \u2013 even to those who don\u2019t want to admit it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut most of all, it was an oddly humanizing moment for someone of Bieber\u2019s stature (especially when he pulled up clips of his younger self walking into a glass door or falling through a hole on stage). Underneath it all, there was an unspoken understanding of, \u201cwe\u2019re good here\u201d \u2014 like a long-awaited release. He revisited his roots, ran through the hits (including \u201cSorry\u201d and \u201cWhere Are \u00dc Now) and poked fun at himself \u2013 like so many others have before. Only now, <em>he\u2019s <\/em>in control \u2013 and owning it. Just look at his festival merchandise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIs it clocking to you yet?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe filled his final moments with \u201cYukon,\u201d \u201cDevotion\u201d featuring Dijon, \u201cI Think You\u2019re Special\u201d with Tems (followed by \u201cEssence,\u201d for which Wizkid also joined) and finally, concluding with his latest hit, \u201cDaisies,\u201d spotlighting Mk.gee on guitar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor fans, Bieberchella may have been a celebration of his career thus far. But for Bieber, it seemed to be more about celebrating his hard-earned and much-deserved peace \u2014 the reward at the end of a long road that has required Bieber to believe in himself every step of the way. Even, or perhaps especially, when others were quick to count him out. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnd now, he\u2019s made it perfectly clear that there\u2019s nothing more important than protecting that peace \u2014 for himself, for his family and for his creativity.
