Draymond Green called it an egregious tanking strategy. The Kings claimed that Doug Christie thought they had a foul to give and was trying to get a free timeout. The NBA investigated and decided the Kings weren’t tanking; they’re just incompetent. It’s one of the funniest reasons a team can give. Because it’s the Kings, I also believe them.

Who’s No. 5?

Filling out the end of the MVP ballot is tough

As I was writing my final Awards Watch column of the 2025-26 season, I had a big moment of confusion in the MVP section. It wasn’t necessarily over who might win it, although there’s still so much to pore over. It was more about how to fill out the entire ballot. You’re supposed to select five players and rank them one through five. The 65-game rule (don’t worry, you probably won’t have to read me rant about it for at least a few days) potentially throws a massive wrench into that fifth spot.

Anthony Edwards is ineligible. Cade Cunningham is ineligible. Luka Dončić might be ineligible. He’s going to appeal because of extraordinary circumstances — he missed games to attend the birth of his child. If I were Cunningham, I would also appeal because a collapsed lung definitely feels like extraordinary circumstances. But let’s say neither of those players wins their appeal (if Cade even appeals). Then who is the fifth player on the ballot?

We can lock in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokić and Jaylen Brown. Victor Wembanyama needs to play 20 minutes in one of his final two games, but he’s expected to do that. That gives us four. Now let’s try to figure out who the fifth player on the ballot might be:

Jalen Brunson: 73 games | 26.0 points | 3.4 rebounds | 6.8 assists | 46.4/37.0/84.1 splitsBrunson is probably the best candidate here. The Knicks are third in the East, and Brunson is the engine of this team. However, the knock against his “value” is that the Knicks are good when he’s not on the floor.

Kevin Durant: 77 games | 25.8 points | 5.4 rebounds | 4.7 assists | 51.7/41.3/87.8You could slot him into this ballot just about every year because of how good he is, how great his production is and how much he impacts the game. However, there seem to have been some big chemistry issues with the Rockets most of this season.

Donovan Mitchell: 70 games | 27.9 points | 4.5 rebounds | 5.7 assists | 48.3/36.4/86.5Cleveland will finish fourth in the East, and it had a major upheaval at the trade deadline. Mitchell has been a tremendous scorer, and the Cavs aren’t good without him.

Kawhi Leonard: 64 games | 28.0 points | 6.3 rebounds | 3.6 assists | 50.5/38.9/89.1This is some of the best offense Leonard has ever played, and you have to assume he hits that 65th game. However, the Clippers are eighth in the West and had a horrific start to the season.

Tyrese Maxey: 67 games | 28.4 points | 4.1 rebounds | 6.7 assists | 46.3/36.9/89.1The Sixers are his team now (more on that below), and even though they still had a bunch of injuries, Maxey kept it together. Philly might be too far back in the East to get him this honor, but he’s in the mix.

Ultimately, I went with Brunson in the column, but all five of these candidates deserve a few more looks. Assuming those appeals don’t help the players screwed by the 65-game rule.

The last 24

🏀 Survey says! Speaking of the MVP race, the first installment of our annual anonymous player poll covers that very topic. Embiid has only played in 38 games this season, and the Sixers have been able to get by without him as they transitioned to being Maxey’s squad. But not having Embiid anytime soon is really difficult. We also don’t exactly know how long he’ll be out.

    {“endpoint”:”https://api-prd-nyt.theathletic.com/graphql”}

There wasn’t a timetable given, but injury expert Jeff Stotts said the average time missed with an appendectomy (rare in the NBA) is 23 days. If we go by that for Embiid, it’s definitely tricky for Philly. The Sixers (43-37) are currently eighth in the East, which means they’d have to get through the Magic (44-36) right now to get the seventh seed. If they do manage to grab one of the last two spots in the East, the playoffs begin nine days after his surgery.

Embiid has now had three straight years without playing even half the season. He’s played 96 total games — 102 if you count the playoffs. By the way, he’s owed $187 million over the next three years. He’s averaging a career low in rebounds (7.7), but his 26.9 points on 48.9 percent shooting in 31.6 minutes are tough to replace. OKC is locked into the top record in the NBA.

No. 2 seeds: The Spurs own the second spot in the West. The Celtics can clinch the No. 2 seed in the East with a win over the Pelicans or a Knicks loss to the Raptors.

No. 3 seeds: The Knicks clinch the third seed in the East with one more win (they have Toronto and Charlotte left) or one more Cleveland loss (Cavs have Atlanta and Washington left). Denver’s magic number for clinching the No. 3 seed in the West is two. The Nuggets still have OKC and San Antonio left. The Lakers own the tiebreaker against Denver and play Phoenix and Utah this weekend. Houston doesn’t have the tiebreaker with either team and has Minnesota and Memphis left. The Lakers can still very much get the third seed.

No. 4 seeds: The Cavs are locked into the East fourth seed with a Knicks win or if they lose a game. In the West, it’s still the same hierarchy as what we discussed for the No. 3 seed. The Lakers have tiebreakers over Denver and Houston. Denver has the tiebreaker over Houston. But the Nuggets have the toughest remaining games if their opponents want to play.

No. 5 seeds: In the East, Toronto clinches the fifth seed with a win and losses by Atlanta and Orlando. Toronto has the tiebreaker over Atlanta and Orlando. Atlanta has the tiebreaker over Orlando. The Magic don’t hold tiebreakers over Philly or Charlotte, so they must win out. The Sixers (Indiana and Milwaukee left) hold the tiebreaker over Charlotte (Detroit and New York left) too.
