The Miami Heat will waive embattled guard Terry Rozier on Friday, a league source confirmed, almost a month after The Athletic<\/em> reported that the move would likely happen near the end of the regular season.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old Rozier is on indefinite leave after he was indicted in October as part of a federal investigation into illegal sports gambling. Rozier pleaded not guilty during a court appearance last year<\/a>. No trial date has been set.<\/p>\n

Rozier was charged with two federal counts in an indictment as part of what the Department of Justice said is a widespread sports gambling case. He has been charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.<\/p>\n

Rozier is alleged to have told a friend, Deniro Laster, that he would take himself out early from a March 2023 Charlotte Hornets game against the New Orleans Pelicans to help sports bettors win their prop bets on his statistics. He played just 9:34 in that game, and hit the under in lines set on his points, assists and 3-pointers. Laster has also been charged as part of the case.<\/p>\n

Rozier was traded from the Hornets in January 2024, but he has not played at all this season. He was left on the bench in the Heat season opener and then arrested the next morning. The NBA soon placed him on unpaid leave, although an arbitrator ruled in February that he must receive his full $26.6 million salary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Heat are 41-39 and own the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference with two games to go in the season.<\/p>\n
