Ex-F1 team boss Guenther Steiner labels MotoGP riders &#8220;a special breed&#8221; <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The most recent was as a stand-in for the injured Maverick Vinales at Portimao last November.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the trauma, Espargaro was determined to ride at the track again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m so proud of Pol to face the fears,\u201d Trevathan told <em>Crash.net<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Portimao 2023] was one of the darkest moments of my career, also.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Espargaro had already replaced Vinales at several rounds last season, performing impressively.<\/p>\n<aside>\n<div class=\"block\">\n<div class=\"mpu-block\">\n<div class=\"mpu-title\"><span>Article continues below<\/span><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<aside>\n<div class=\"block\">\n<div class=\"mpu-block\">\n<div class=\"mpu-title\"><span>Article continues below<\/span><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>But nobody would have blamed him for turning down the Portimao ride. KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer also made clear there was no pressure.<\/p>\n<p>However, Pol was adamant he wanted to \u2018settle a score\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPit told me that he really pushed Pol, saying, \u2018Do you really want to do this? guy who pumped himself up so much and [really felt] the anxiety and everything else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow the pressure&#8217;s gone\u2026 He&#8217;s really enjoying it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Espargaro, 34, remains a KTM test and replacement rider for 2026, while also working as a TV pundit and mentoring Moto2 title contender Dani Holgado.<\/p>\n<p>Trevathan and Acosta kicked off this season with a Portuguese MotoGP.<\/p>\n<p>Further down the order, Trevathan\u2019s former rider Pol Espargaro crossed the line in tenth after \u201cfacing his fears\u201d at the circuit where he suffered a career-changing accident in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Trevathan and Espargaro formed a close bond during the early years of KTM\u2019s MotoGP project, culminating in the Spaniard scoring five podiums and finishing fifth in the 2020 standings.<\/p>\n<p>After two seasons at Repsol Honda, Espargaro then returned to KTM via Tech3, reuniting with Trevathan.<\/p>\n<p>Aiming to pick up where they left off, disaster struck during practice for the Portimao season opener, where Espargaro suffered ten fractures &#8211; to his neck, vertebrae, ribs and jaw &#8211; plus a lung injury, after striking an
