One of the ships was the MSG, while the other, the Marivex, was carrying oil from Bandar Abbas in Iran to the Indian port of New Mangalore.<\/p>\n<p>About a fifth of global crude and gas typically passes through the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-us-war-strait-of-hormuz-shipping-oil\/a-76503935\">strategic chokepoint<\/a> but the\u00a0flow of oil was severely disrupted by the US-Isarel war with Iran. Even after the ceasefire, the crucial waterway has not fully reopened.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The supply disruption has led to a shortage of cooking gas in India, affecting hotels, households and businesses. Under the threat of US President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs, India&#8217;s\u00a0imports of Russian crude fell in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>A few months, a war and a waiver later, the question stands \u2014 will oil resurface as a sticking\u00a0point between New Delhi and Washington when the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visits India in May?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the Iran war began, the US first gave India and then the rest of the world <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/india-news-us-grants-30-day-waiver-for-russian-oil-imports\/live-76239112\">a waiver to buy Russian crude oil.<\/a> It is a temporary measure meant to help countries\u00a0secure their energy needs while Trump and Netanyahu&#8217;s campaign\u00a0disrupts oil flow from the Gulf.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the last month, Indian officials confirmed they were purchasing crude oil and LPG from any and all available sources, including Russia. On April 8, several reports\u00a0said that India was set to receive its <a rel=\"noopener follow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/p.dw.com\/p\/5BgW8\" title=\"External link \u2014 first oil shipment from Iran in seven years\">first oil shipment from Iran in seven years<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>India hadn&#8217;t purchased crude from Iran since May 2019 due to US sanctions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Why are\u00a0India&#8217;s oil purchases a diplomatic flashpoint?<\/h3>\n<p>In February, Trump and Rubio claimed a diplomatic victory, saying India had <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/will-india-ditch-russian-oil-us-sanctions-donald-trump-ukraine-war\/a-74513898\">&#8220;committed&#8221;<\/a> to stop buying Russian oil and had already taken significant steps to reduce imports. Trump said this while <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-india-unveil-interim-trade-deal-framework\/a-75852428\">rescinding the 25% punitive tariffs<\/a> imposed on India in August 2025, adding that the tariffs would apply again if India returned to purchasing Russian oil.<\/p>\n<p>While India did not publicly confirm that\u00a0commitment,\u00a0Indian refineries <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/indias-oil-shake-up-can-venezuela-really-replace-russia\/a-75778325\">increased purchases of Venezuelan crude oil<\/a> to their highest level\u00a0in six years, as per reports by Indian media.<\/p>\n<p>When questioned about the oil purchases in February, Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar had said that India was &#8220;wedded&#8221; to its strategic autonomy and would do what was in its best interests.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Reuters reported that India expects the US to extend its waiver on purchases of Russian oil to help bring down global crude prices that have surged because of the war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>New Delhi and Washington remain close allies in areas of security, trade, defense and technology. One of the ships was the MSG, while the other, the Marivex, was carrying oil from Bandar Abbas in Iran to the Indian port of New Mangalore.<\/p>\n<p>About a fifth of global crude and gas typically passes through the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-us-war-strait-of-hormuz-shipping-oil\/a-76503935\">strategic chokepoint<\/a> but the\u00a0flow of oil was severely disrupted by the US-Isarel war with Iran.
