Fortunately for them, Waymo does, and it has recently decided to launch a pilot program, along with Google\u2019s Waze, to share its pothole data with city officials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The mission is to make city streets safer to drive, which is desirable for both human and robot drivers. And it could help Waymo\u2019s broader effort to build positive relationships with cities, especially at a time when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2025\/07\/25\/waymo-and-its-self-driving-cars-face-steep-opposition-in-boston\/\">finds itself at odds with some city governments<\/a> over the future of its driverless cars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cWe realized, hey, once we\u2019re at scale, we can actually share this data with cities, which is something that they\u2019ve asked for and something that we collect at scale,\u201d said Arielle Fleisher, Waymo\u2019s policy development and research manager. \u201cAnd so we figured out a way to make that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1o279nj2 _1o279nj0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote qnnwq0\">\n<div class=\"qnnwq1\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup qnnwq2 _1xwtict9\">\u201cWe can actually share this data with cities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup qnnwq3\">\u2014 Arielle Fleisher, Waymo<\/cite><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Waymo uses its perception hardware, including cameras and radar, as well as accelerometers and the vehicle\u2019s physical feedback system, to log every pothole its vehicles encounter. These sensors detect physical changes to the road\u2019s surface, such as tilt and movement when the vehicle encounters irregularities. Originally, Waymo knew it needed the ability to detect potholes so it could ensure that its vehicles slowed down to avoid damage or injury to the passenger. Later, the company realized this could be invaluable data for cities, too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cIt\u2019s totally automated,\u201d Fleisher said. \u201cIt\u2019s from our systems. When we were putting this together, we did quality control just as part of our effort to make sure that we\u2019re providing robust, high-quality data to cities.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">To be sure, Waymo\u2019s vehicles sometimes have their own pothole trouble. A local news broadcast last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-tJH8hED11I\">captured a Waymo driving through a water-filled pothole<\/a> in San Francisco, seemingly without slowing down. Waymo spokesperson Ethan Teicher said that experiences like that help improve the vehicle\u2019s autonomous technology, which is then spread across the whole fleet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Under the new pilot program, that data will now be made available to cities\u2019 departments of transportation through a free-to-use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2025\/07\/28\/waymo-boston-city-council-self-driving-regulations-newsletter\">Waze for Cities platform<\/a>, which provides access to real-time, user-generated traffic data that officials can then use to make important decisions \u2014 such as pothole repair. The platform also allows for Waze users to validate pothole locations through their own observations, decreasing the chances that city officials will be led astray by false positives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Currently, many cities rely on a patchwork of non-emergency 311 reports and manual inspections to address their pothole problems. Waymo developed this pilot program after collecting years of feedback from city officials about the state of their highways and surface streets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The company is launching the new pilot in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta, where Waymo says it has already helped the city identify approximately 500 potholes. Fleisher said that Waymo would be open to expanding the project to other street maladies based on further feedback from officials. The company is eager to learn what other types of street condition or safety data might be valuable, she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Another goal of the project is to cast Waymo as a willing partner with cities, rather than as a scary technology company who is coming to eliminate human jobs. To be sure, Waymo has run into some roadblocks in some cities, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2025\/07\/28\/waymo-boston-city-council-self-driving-regulations-newsletter\">Boston<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2026\/04\/06\/waymo-driverless-cars-testing-roads-autonomous-vehicle\/\">New York<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/waymo-hits-a-rough-patch-in-washington-dc\/\">Washington, DC<\/a>, where union membership is still strong. <a href=\"https:\/\/teamster.org\/2026\/02\/teamsters-call-for-cpuc-to-suspend-waymos-operating-license-indefinitely\/\">Unions like the Teamsters oppose Waymo<\/a> because of the probability that many human drivers will lose their jobs as a result of an influx of robotaxis.
