Whose fears? Whose values? Whose justice?\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/38384\/1\/barbara-kruger-on-staging-a-fake-supreme-drop-performa-pop-up\"><span>In 2017<\/span><\/a><span>, an NYC skatepark was wrapped with these words as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/barbarakruger\">Barbara Kruger<\/a>\u2019s citywide takeover for the Performa Biennial, marking an expansion of the artist\u2019s bold works into new objects and environments. \u201cMy work is about how we are to one another: our adoration, our contempt, our desire and our disgust,\u201d she tells Dazed. \u201cAnd this engagement is both visible and audible in my installations, in both gallery and museum spaces, in still and moving images, and in the expansive terrain of infrastructural and built environments.\u201d Through Performa, she added the skate park to the list, as both a new challenge and a new way to get her message out into the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As curator Job Piston puts it, looking back on the 2017 project: \u201cThe smooth, concave curves of the skatepark, the quarter pipes and U-shapes, opened up an entirely new architectural challenge.\u201d And it didn\u2019t end there. Alongside artworks on metro cards, billboards, and a school bus, Kruger also created a merch drop-slash-performance art piece that played on her complicated relationship with Supreme, featuring hoodies and hats emblazoned with her messages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cLong queues were a key element,\u201d says Cyril Duval (AKA the French conceptual artist and designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/item_idem\/\">Item Idem<\/a>). \u201cThe \u2018drop\u2019 was clearly designed to mimic the streetwear phenomenon \u2013\u00a0the almost obsessive culture of waiting in line \u2013\u00a0which extends beyond fashion to Apple stores, Black Friday, and other consumerist rituals. The updated hoodie and t-shirt, initially available in the French capital, featured text-based works from the original project \u2013 in Kruger\u2019s iconic white Futura font \u2013\u00a0as well as translations in French and Arabic. \u201cIn thinking through the local context of Paris, we discussed the languages that shape its cultural landscape, French, English, and Arabic,\u201d says Duval, \u201cas a way to speak directly to the city\u2019s youth and next-generation creatives across art, music, and fashion from the ground up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Kruger adds: \u201cThe updated merch is an extension of my translation of texts to match the context in which the work is seen, hopefully making it available to a larger local viewership.\u201d Adding to this, fashion photographer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/remilamande\/?hl=en\"><span>Re\u0301mi Lamande\u0301<\/span><\/a><span> captured the new iteration of the project in a series of stark images \u2013 styled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stephygalvani\/\">Stephy Galvani<\/a> \u2013 that Kruger calls \u201cterrifically seductive and stylish\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"4d864c9b-17a1-45f7-ae34-b42500c649e0\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1747\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442995.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.8\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Barbara Kruger, The Drop (2025)\" class=\"img\" height=\"2184\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442995.jpg\" width=\"1747\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Barbara Kruger, The <span class=\"nowrap\">Drop (2025)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"credit\">Photography R\u00e9mi Lamand\u00e9, styling <span class=\"nowrap\">Stephy Galvani<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Pushing the aesthetic of the project even further into the realm of advertising and consumer culture, the shoot also saw Piston and Duval lean heavily into diverse, and more often overtly feminine, casting. \u201cAnd that was also tied to the meaning of the work,\u201d Piston adds. Barbara\u2019s original piece can be seen as a reaction to those very male-dominated, almost \u2018boys\u2019 club\u2019 cultures, like Supreme and others. Whose fears? Whose values? Whose justice?\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/38384\/1\/barbara-kruger-on-staging-a-fake-supreme-drop-performa-pop-up\"><span>In 2017<\/span><\/a><span>, an NYC skatepark was wrapped with these words as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/barbarakruger\">Barbara Kruger<\/a>\u2019s citywide takeover for the Performa Biennial, marking an expansion of the artist\u2019s bold works into new objects and environments. \u201cMy work is about how we are to one another: our adoration, our contempt, our desire and our disgust,\u201d she tells Dazed. \u201cAnd this engagement is both visible and audible in my installations, in both gallery and museum spaces, in still and moving images, and in the expansive terrain of infrastructural and built environments.\u201d Through Performa, she added the skate park to the list, as both a new challenge and a new way to get her message out into the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As curator Job Piston puts it, looking back on the 2017 project: \u201cThe smooth, concave curves of the skatepark, the quarter pipes and U-shapes, opened up an entirely new architectural challenge.\u201d And it didn\u2019t end there. Alongside artworks on metro cards, billboards, and a school bus, Kruger also created a merch drop-slash-performance art piece that played on her complicated relationship with Supreme, featuring hoodies and hats emblazoned with her messages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cLong queues were a key element,\u201d says Cyril Duval (AKA the French conceptual artist and designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/item_idem\/\">Item Idem<\/a>). \u201cThe \u2018drop\u2019 was clearly designed to mimic the streetwear phenomenon \u2013\u00a0the almost obsessive culture of waiting in line \u2013\u00a0which extends beyond fashion to Apple stores, Black Friday, and other consumerist rituals. The updated hoodie and t-shirt, initially available in the French capital, featured text-based works from the original project \u2013 in Kruger\u2019s iconic white Futura font \u2013\u00a0as well as translations in French and Arabic. \u201cIn thinking through the local context of Paris, we discussed the languages that shape its cultural landscape, French, English, and Arabic,\u201d says Duval, \u201cas a way to speak directly to the city\u2019s youth and next-generation creatives across art, music, and fashion from the ground up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Kruger adds: \u201cThe updated merch is an extension of my translation of texts to match the context in which the work is seen, hopefully making it available to a larger local viewership.\u201d Adding to this, fashion photographer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/remilamande\/?hl=en\"><span>Re\u0301mi Lamande\u0301<\/span><\/a><span> captured the new iteration of the project in a series of stark images \u2013 styled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stephygalvani\/\">Stephy Galvani<\/a> \u2013 that Kruger calls \u201cterrifically seductive and stylish\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"4d864c9b-17a1-45f7-ae34-b42500c649e0\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1747\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442995.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.8\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Barbara Kruger, The Drop (2025)\" class=\"img\" height=\"2184\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442995.jpg\" width=\"1747\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Barbara Kruger, The <span class=\"nowrap\">Drop (2025)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"credit\">Photography R\u00e9mi Lamand\u00e9, styling <span class=\"nowrap\">Stephy Galvani<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Pushing the aesthetic of the project even further into the realm of advertising and consumer culture, the shoot also saw Piston and Duval lean heavily into diverse, and more often overtly feminine, casting. \u201cAnd that was also tied to the meaning of the work,\u201d Piston adds. Barbara\u2019s original piece can be seen as a reaction to those very male-dominated, almost \u2018boys\u2019 club\u2019 cultures, like Supreme and others.
