Mathieu van der Poel collapsed over his handlebars, and one image on Sunday captured the full weight of Tadej Poga\u010dar\u2019s absolute\u00a0victory at\u00a0the Tour of Flanders.<\/p>\n

\n

Poga\u010dar consoled him in a brief moment of mutual respect as the Dutchman searched for answers to a question already decided on the road. The gesture confirmed what the numbers and the finish line already said.<\/p>\n

After a brutal, era-defining duel on the Oude Kwaremont, Van der Poel emptied the tank and still came up short.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was riding at 650 watts and couldn\u2019t hold the wheel,\u201d he said after finishing second on Sunday. \u201cCycling is simple. I had to submit to the law of the strongest.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a rider who is rarely beaten on favored terrain, that phrase was an honest admission of Sunday\u2019s brutal truth.<\/p>\n

The Dutch superstar didn\u2019t crack from tactics. He cracked from pure physics.<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s rumble in Flanders saw plenty of pre-race hype about Remco Evenepoel and the \u201cG4,\u201d but it was really only about MVDP vs. Pogi.<\/p>\n

The pair had been shadow boxing all spring, and Sunday was the big blowout.<\/p>\n

When Poga\u010dar launched his inevitable attacks on the final loop, the Alpecin-Premier Tech captain tried but eventually accepted he had no answer after a knockdown, 278km bout.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did everything I had to do, but there was someone stronger. There is nothing you can do about that,\u201d he said. \u201cI hung on for a bit, but he still had an acceleration left. Then I broke.\u201d<\/p>\n

The big Dutchman never truly gave up, and he never made a mistake, but something inside of him seemed to have died.<\/p>\n

Despite giving everything he had, he was slowly losing ground rather than narrowing the gap.<\/p>\n

Van der Poel, perhaps pushed deeper than he\u2019s ever been, reached out to congratulate Poga\u010dar after crossing the line at 34 seconds back.<\/p>\n

There was a handshake out of respect and a hug between equals.<\/p>\n

Van der Poel \u2014 arguably the greatest\u00a0pure one-day rider of this generation \u2014 seemed to accept and even celebrate Pogacar\u2019s superiority.<\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t just another race.<\/p>\n

For years, he has been the lone rider who could meet Poga\u010dar head-on in these brutal, high-voltage classics and come out on top.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, he matched him move for move until the final ascent of the Oude Kwaremont, when the elastic finally snapped.<\/p>\n

Behind them, Evenepoel still hovered dangerously close, and even Poga\u010dar took an extra dig to make sure the Belgian didn\u2019t come back.<\/p>\n

Then it was all on Van der Poel, and he couldn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t look back. I only just saw on the TV screen how close he was,\u201d Van der Poel said of Evenepoel. \u201cI took my turns, but didn\u2019t go too crazy. Tadej kept pushing hard on every section. It was a struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Poga\u010dar kept turning the screws to apply relentless pressure that reduced the front group to a single-file struggle for survival.<\/p>\n

What were six seconds at the top of the final Kwaremont turned into nearly a half-minute after the Paterberg.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, even MVDP seemed to admit that Poga\u010dar is now in a class of his own.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would have been the most beautiful if I had stood on the top step,\u201d he said. \u201cI was realistic to know that Tadej is always the man to beat. I gave everything I could, and I think I reached the level I had in mind, but he was too strong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paris-Roubaix looms next, where the Dutchman still holds the upper hand.<\/p>\n

But after Sunday, nothing is certain anymore.<\/p>\n
