Cruise<\/span><\/em> (published by Garret Publications) <span>is a photo book<\/span><span>capturing the Finnish subculture of p<\/span><span>illuralli,<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span>where young people gather with their cars on weekend nights, driving loops around their towns or simply hanging out. Using a subtle but rich and vivid colour palette, the series is a compelling mixture of portraits (his subjects typically stare directly at the camera, with expressions ranging from shy to defiant); suburban landscapes, and shots of the cars themselves, including striking close-ups of details, such as a fuchsia door-handle and a car door loaded with speakers. It\u2019s a depiction of provincial Finland at once desolate and humming with life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to photographer Jussi<\/span><span> Puikkonen<\/span><span>, p<\/span>illuralli <span>is a social ritual which allows its participants to construct meaning, identity and belonging. \u201cIt\u2019s a right of passage,\u201d he tells Dazed. \u201cIt\u2019s when they become adults, when they get their first car, and when they have their own private space for the first time.\u201d\u00a0 Born and raised in Finland, where he studied photography, <\/span><span>Puikkonen<\/span><span> has been living in Amsterdam for the last 15 years. He was aware of the culture depicted in <\/span><em><span>Cruise<\/span><\/em><span>, having grown up in a small town, but he missed out on participating in pilluralli himself; he moved to Helsinki at a young age, and it exists \u201cbasically everywhere\u201d except the capital city. It took moving away from Finland to see the beauty in it: most people living there don\u2019t. It\u2019s widely thought of as noisy and antisocial.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"5379ad70-4ae3-4439-b60f-b41f011145f7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442880.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.8\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cruise\" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442880.jpg\" width=\"2400\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Jussi Puikkonen<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>As well as being widely viewed as a public nuisance, <\/span>pilluralli i<span>s often discussed as a symbol of social exclusion. \u201cIn many small towns, the young kids don&#8217;t have anything to do, so they just sit in their cars, and they end up doing nothing \u2013 that\u2019s how it\u2019s viewed,\u201d he says. As a coming-of-age ritual, it\u2019s more or less a cross-class phenomenon. \u201cIt\u2019s not literally everyone who does it, but in smaller towns it\u2019s often the main way young people spend their time,\u201d he explains. But once people start moving away to attend university or find jobs in bigger cities, there is a visible socio-economic divide in terms of who is left behind,\u00a0 still sitting in their cars on the edge of town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When he returned to his home country during the Covid lockdown, <\/span><span>Puikkonen<\/span><span> looked at the phenomenon with fresh eyes. \u201cThis is their passion, and I find it interesting when people are passionate about something,\u201d he says. It represents a very Finnish form of socialising. \u201cGenerally, we are quite reserved, so it fits that mentality quite well. Because you&#8217;re sitting in your car, you have that protection, and you can observe from there, and slowly, you can get to know other people who are doing it.\u201d There\u2019s a creative element too, with many of these young people having spent a great deal of time and effort painstakingly modifying their cars: one shot, for example, shows an inner door fitted decked out with five speakers. \u201cIt\u2019s funny, because the cars might be worth \u20ac500, and the sound system they put in might cost \u20ac10,000.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"7285c6c4-a0ae-42d3-9b0f-b41f01114bd5\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442881.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.25\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cruise\" class=\"img\" height=\"2400\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442881.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Jussi Puikkonen<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Finnish people may have a tendency to be reserved, but he received a warm welcome from everyone he approached, and the vast majority were happy to have their photographs taken. \u201dI didn\u2019t have any hidden agenda. I told them that I\u2019m just interested in what they\u2019re doing and that I wasn\u2019t sure whether it was going to be a book, an exhibition, or whatever. About 95 per cent said that was totally fine, and invited me into their cars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Puikkonen\u2019s <\/span><span>guiding principle as an artist is that he wants his work to be real. \u201cI try not to set things up too much,\u201d he says. He draws inspiration from American photographers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/alec-soth\">Alec Soth<\/a> and Joel Sternfield, along with filmmakers who communicate more through images than words: Charlotte Wells\u2019 <\/span><em><span>Aftersun<\/span><\/em><span>, a slow-burning, languorous account of a holiday between a father and his young daughter, was a \u201chuge influence\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What may not be apparent about these images at first glance is that most of them were made at night-time; as they were shot in the northern regions of Finland in the height of summer, they\u2019re still flooded with a moody, crepuscular light. \u201cI wanted to emphasise the nightless night,\u201d says <\/span><span>Puikkonen<\/span><span>. Eventually, he expanded to shooting in winter too, which led to one of the stand-out shots of the series: taken on a foggy evening, the fluorescent lights from a nearby harbour paint the sky a deep, burning orange. Using a subtle but rich and vivid colour palette, the series is a compelling mixture of portraits (his subjects typically stare directly at the camera, with expressions ranging from shy to defiant); suburban landscapes, and shots of the cars themselves, including striking close-ups of details, such as a fuchsia door-handle and a car door loaded with speakers. It\u2019s a depiction of provincial Finland at once desolate and humming with life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to photographer Jussi<\/span><span> Puikkonen<\/span><span>, p<\/span>illuralli <span>is a social ritual which allows its participants to construct meaning, identity and belonging. \u201cIt\u2019s a right of passage,\u201d he tells Dazed. \u201cIt\u2019s when they become adults, when they get their first car, and when they have their own private space for the first time.\u201d\u00a0 Born and raised in Finland, where he studied photography, <\/span><span>Puikkonen<\/span><span> has been living in Amsterdam for the last 15 years. He was aware of the culture depicted in <\/span><em><span>Cruise<\/span><\/em><span>, having grown up in a small town, but he missed out on participating in pilluralli himself; he moved to Helsinki at a young age, and it exists \u201cbasically everywhere\u201d except the capital city. It took moving away from Finland to see the beauty in it: most people living there don\u2019t. It\u2019s widely thought of as noisy and antisocial.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"5379ad70-4ae3-4439-b60f-b41f011145f7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442880.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.8\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cruise\" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442880.jpg\" width=\"2400\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Jussi Puikkonen<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>As well as being widely viewed as a public nuisance, <\/span>pilluralli i<span>s often discussed as a symbol of social exclusion. \u201cIn many small towns, the young kids don&#8217;t have anything to do, so they just sit in their cars, and they end up doing nothing \u2013 that\u2019s how it\u2019s viewed,\u201d he says. As a coming-of-age ritual, it\u2019s more or less a cross-class phenomenon. \u201cIt\u2019s not literally everyone who does it, but in smaller towns it\u2019s often the main way young people spend their time,\u201d he explains. But once people start moving away to attend university or find jobs in bigger cities, there is a visible socio-economic divide in terms of who is left behind,\u00a0 still sitting in their cars on the edge of town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When he returned to his home country during the Covid lockdown, <\/span><span>Puikkonen<\/span><span> looked at the phenomenon with fresh eyes. \u201cThis is their passion, and I find it interesting when people are passionate about something,\u201d he says. It represents a very Finnish form of socialising. \u201cGenerally, we are quite reserved, so it fits that mentality quite well. Because you&#8217;re sitting in your car, you have that protection, and you can observe from there, and slowly, you can get to know other people who are doing it.\u201d There\u2019s a creative element too, with many of these young people having spent a great deal of time and effort painstakingly modifying their cars: one shot, for example, shows an inner door fitted decked out with five speakers. \u201cIt\u2019s funny, because the cars might be worth \u20ac500, and the sound system they put in might cost \u20ac10,000.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"7285c6c4-a0ae-42d3-9b0f-b41f01114bd5\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442881.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.25\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cruise\" class=\"img\" height=\"2400\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442881.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Jussi Puikkonen<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Finnish people may have a tendency to be reserved, but he received a warm welcome from everyone he approached, and the vast majority were happy to have their photographs taken. \u201dI didn\u2019t have any hidden agenda. I told them that I\u2019m just interested in what they\u2019re doing and that I wasn\u2019t sure whether it was going to be a book, an exhibition, or whatever. About 95 per cent said that was totally fine, and invited me into their cars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Puikkonen\u2019s <\/span><span>guiding principle as an artist is that he wants his work to be real. \u201cI try not to set things up too much,\u201d he says. He draws inspiration from American photographers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/alec-soth\">Alec Soth<\/a> and Joel Sternfield, along with filmmakers who communicate more through images than words: Charlotte Wells\u2019 <\/span><em><span>Aftersun<\/span><\/em><span>, a slow-burning, languorous account of a holiday between a father and his young daughter, was a \u201chuge influence\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What may not be apparent about these images at first glance is that most of them were made at night-time; as they were shot in the northern regions of Finland in the height of summer, they\u2019re still flooded with a moody, crepuscular light. \u201cI wanted to emphasise the nightless night,\u201d says <\/span><span>Puikkonen<\/span><span>. Eventually, he expanded to shooting in winter too, which led to one of the stand-out shots of the series: taken on a foggy evening, the fluorescent lights from a nearby harbour paint the sky a deep, burning orange.
