The US\u00a0is the largest producer but still imports a significant \u2014 though recently shrinking \u2014 share of its crude oil from the region. However, it is not clear how these countries would make such investments, because the figures far exceed the size of their economies. Surprisingly, he did not mention NATO, which had been expected ahead of the address.<\/p>\n<p>During the 20-minute prepared speech, Trump made some misleading or false statements on Iran&#8217;s previous leadership\u00a0and the US economy. <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/fact-check\/t-56584214\">DW Fact check<\/a>examined a few claims from his speech.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Claim<\/strong>: <em>&#8220;Regime change was not our goal. We never said regime change, but regime change has occurred because of all of their original leaders&#8217;\u00a0death. They&#8217;re all dead,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0Trump said during his remarks, according to a transcript.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DW Fact check<\/strong>: Misleading<\/p>\n<p>While it is true that Trump did not state regime change as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/4450132\/trump-objectives-in-iran-near-completion-terrorist-nation-bully-no-longer\/#:~:text=The%20United%20States%20kicked%20off,Iran%20never%20has%20nuclear%20weapons.\">a goal<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/8iwaA\">start of the war<\/a>, he did claim at later stages that it had occurred (like <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-remarks-markwayne-mullin-swearing-in-oval-office-march-24-2026\/#134\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-interview-fox-news-the-five-march-26-2026\/#106\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-speech-saudi-investment-conference-florida-march-27-2026\/#146\">here<\/a>). He also called on the &#8220;people of Iran&#8221; to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/8iwaA\">take action<\/a>. &#8220;When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations,&#8221; Trump said on February 28.<\/p>\n<p>During Trump&#8217;s first administration, the US killed top Iranian military leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/who-was-qassem-soleimani-irans-quds-force-leader\/a-51875208#:~:text=Iranian%20Major%20General%20Qassem%20Soleimani%2C%20considered%20one,was%20killed%20in%20a%20calculated%20US%20airstrike.\">Qassem Soleimani<\/a>. Since the start of the current US-Israel war with Iran, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/which-key-iranian-figures-have-been-killed-us-israeli-strikes-2026-03-28\/\">several key leaders<\/a> in Iran have been killed, most notably its Supreme Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/khameneis-death-never-thought-i-would-see-this-day\/a-76175776\">Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The latter has, however, been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-war-khamenei-son-mojtaba-named-new-supreme-leader\/live-76263936\">replaced by his son<\/a>, Mojtaba Khamenei,\u00a0arguably signalling more of a continuation of the previous regime than a change. We don&#8217;t have to be there.
