But if the weather turns warm or dry, it may fall short of expectations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"518\" data-end=\"868\"><strong>Snowpack is measured in two main ways: total snow depth and snow-water equivalent (SWE).<\/strong>\u00a0SWE is especially important because it quantifies the water\u00a0actually stored in the snow, providing a clearer picture of how much runoff may be available in spring. For instance, 10 feet of dense snow can hold as much water as 20 feet of lighter snow.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"870\" data-end=\"998\" data-is-last-node data-is-only-node><strong>Let\u2019s take a look at the current SWE across the U.S. to see how this early-season snowpack stacks up against the 30-year median.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_397904\" a percentage of average, has gotten even worse since <a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/march-2026-state-of-the-western-u-s-snowpack-showing-slight-improvement-but-still-below-average\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last month<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"2\"><b data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Regional Snowpack Breakdown<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s really not much analysis needed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The entire map is either red, orange, or yellow.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Not a single area is green, blue, or especially dark blue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Many were hoping for a miracle March to help save the snowpack, but it never happened.<\/strong> At this point, some ski areas more for a season-long failure to stack meaningful snow.<\/strong> Storms came too infrequently, snow levels were often too high, and the mountain snowpack never had the steady reinforcement it needed to recover.
