A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck the Northern \u200cMolucca \u2060Sea \u2060off the coast of Ternate, Indonesia<\/a>, early Thursday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.<\/p>\n

It triggered a\u00a0tsunami warning\u00a0for Indonesia as well as\u00a0its neighboring countries the Philippines and Malaysia, with the\u00a0US monitoring center warning about\u00a0possible “hazardous tsunami waves” within 1,000 kilometers\u00a0(621 miles) of the epicenter.<\/p>\n

But the warning has now been lifted.<\/p>\n

What do we know so far?<\/h2>\n

The quake struck some 127 kilometres west of Ternate at a depth of about 35 kilometres.<\/p>\n

The USGS reported aftershocks of magnitude as high as 5.0.<\/p>\n

Indonesia’s meteorology agency \u200cBMKG reported tsunami waves \u2060in the North Maluku province at 30 centimeters high and Bitung in northeastern Sulawesi at 20 centimeters high .<\/p>\n

Indonesian broadcaster Metro TV reported that one person had been killed by the falling rubble in the Manado area as footage showed buildings suffering damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Indonesia straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire<\/a>, a tectonic zone with intense seismic and volcanic activity.<\/p>\n
