In retaliation for strikes by the US and Israel, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c78n6p09pzno\"><span>Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz<\/span><\/a><span>, a narrow strip through which 30 per cent of the world\u2019s oil passes, alongside supplies like fertiliser, which are vital for the production of food. This was an <\/span><span>obvious outcome of attacking Iran, which is why previous generations of war-mongering American politicians have never attempted it, however much they wanted to. But either the possibility didn\u2019t occur to the Trump administration, or they failed to take it seriously.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While we\u2019re yet to see the full effects of this war, partly due to Trump\u2019s ongoing manipulation of the stock market, an economic crisis of some kind is inevitable. It\u2019s not a question of whether it will happen, but of just how bad it will be. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/ng-interactive\/2026\/mar\/22\/iran-war-global-economy-donald-trump-oil-prices-inflation\"><span>some experts<\/span><\/a><span>, we could be facing a global recession or even a depression, and the knock-on effects are hard to predict.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The human toll of the war has already been catastrophic: Israel is ramping up its aggression against Lebanon and in many ways repeating the Gaza playbook, killing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cgme1j70294o\"><span>journalists<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/mar\/14\/lebanon-israeli-rockets-kill-healthcare-workers\"><span>healthcare workers<\/span><\/a><span>, displacing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rescue.org\/uk\/press-release\/one-million-people-displaced-across-lebanon-just-two-weeks-children-need-urgent\"><span>around a million people<\/span><\/a><span>and planning a long-term military occupation. Thousands of civilians in Iran have been killed, including an estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/press-releases\/brutality-war-measured-childrens-lives-hostilities-escalate-iran\"><span>165 school girls<\/span><\/a><span> in a single strike, with civilian deaths reported in Israel and across the Gulf.\u00a0<\/span><span>Keeping that in mind should be first and foremost, rather than worrying about the price of fast fashion and our summer holidays. However, it\u2019s still worth considering the economic fallout from the US and Israel\u2019s reckless decision to attack Iran. Below, we explain some of the ways the war will impact all of our lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7623543252884491542\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><strong>EVERYTHING WILL GET MORE EXPENSIVE<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span>The energy crisis is going to make everything more expensive, because oil is used in the production and transport of just about everything. In addition to the Strait of Hormuz being closed, there\u2019s a high possibility that the Houthis \u2013 a political and military organisation based in Yemen \u2013 will blockade the Red Sea, as it did between 2024 and 2025 in response to Israel\u2019s genocide in Gaza, in a measure which contributed to high inflation in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We\u2019re looking at increases in the price of everything you\u2019d expect, such as household energy bills, which in the UK could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/business\/energy-bills-iran-government-vat-claire-coutinho-b2948965.html\"><span>surge<\/span><\/a><span>by as much as \u00a3288 per year; groceries, which could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/uk-food-inflation-heading-towards-10-due-iran-war-industry-says-2026-04-01\/\"><span>rise<\/span><\/a><span> by as much as 10 per cent; petrol, which has already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn89zgx1vkvo\"><span>spiked<\/span><\/a><span> significantly, and clothes, with the international textile industry set to take a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.fashionnetwork.com\/news\/War-in-iran-how-will-it-affect-the-international-textile-trade-,1811987.html\"><span>major hit<\/span><\/a><span>. But some of the effects are a bit more diffuse. As a result of the crisis, mortgage lenders have already increased their rates, which isn\u2019t just a problem if you\u2019re a homeowner: landlords almost always pass these costs onto their tenants, so the price of rent, already at breaking point across Britain, could go even higher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><strong>WE COULD GET A FOUR-DAY WORK WEEK\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Many countries are struggling to access vital oil supplies from Southwest Asia and North Africa, which has led Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Pakistan to adopt a four-day workweek to save fuel and energy. Will this shift similarly occur in the UK? It\u2019s happened here before \u2013 in the early 1970s, we adopted a three-day workweek due to severe coal shortages \u2013 but Dr Wladislaw Rivkin, Professor in Organisational Behaviour at Trinity Business School, told <a href=\"http:\/\/philippines\"><em>Fortune<\/em><\/a> that he thinks it\u2019s unlikely this time around: \u201cI do not see this as a model for the US and UK, at least in the long term, because the current sharp rise in fuel cost is temporary\u201d. Even though he is apprehensive of this shift, he also suggests that we shouldn\u2019t rule it out entirely, depending on how the US\u2019s war on Iran develops.<\/p>\n<p><span>Whatever happens, more working from home seems likely. Earlier this week, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing <\/span>Dan J\u00f8rgensen urged people in the continent to \u201cwork from home where possible, <span>reduce highway speed limits by 10 kilometres [an hour], encourage public transport, alternate private car access&#8230; increase car sharing and adopt efficient driving practices.\u201d He added: \u201cThe more you can do to save oil \u2013 especially diesel and jet fuel \u2013 the better off we are.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><strong>YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAY MIGHT GET CANCELLED<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t booked a summer holiday yet, you might want to adjust your expectations and start thinking about a staycation. The price of jet fuel has <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/31\/world\/video\/iran-war-oil-jet-fuel-price-vrtc-ldn-digvid\">doubled<\/a> in recent weeks, airlines around the world are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2026\/03\/30\/thousands-of-flights-cancelled-as-jet-fuel-costs-soar\/\">cancelling<\/a> thousands of flights, and industry experts have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/mar\/26\/iran-war-us-gas-fuel-oil-fertilizer-prices\">warned<\/a> that fares are going to increase as summer approaches, with long-haul flights particularly affected. To deal with the crisis, some European leaders have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-gb\/money\/other\/europe-urges-fewer-flights-remote-working-as-iran-war-drains-oil-supplies\/ar-AA1ZTeyV?ocid=finance-verthp-feeds\">urging<\/a> people to take fewer flights. On the plus side, there\u2019s still time to convince yourself that a caravaning holiday in Wiltshire is just as fun as going to Tokyo or Mexico City.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><strong>&#8230;AND SO MIGHT MORE SPORTS GAMES AND GIGS<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The sports and entertainment industry is also taking a hit. The F1 has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/03\/29\/world\/middleeast\/iran-war-global-impact-economy-fuel.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share\">cancelled<\/a> some of its races amid missile attacks targeting Gulf nations. Artists such as Shakira and Christina Aguilera have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/03\/29\/world\/middleeast\/iran-war-global-impact-economy-fuel.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share\">postponed<\/a> shows in the region due to security concerns. There may also be a balloon shortage, as Qatar produces a third of the world\u2019s helium and production and exports have halted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><strong>THERE COULD BE MEDICATION SHORTAGES\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>As reported in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/nhs-medical-supplies-shortage-iran-war-b2949147.html\"><em>Independent<\/em><\/a> today, NHS chiefs are worried that we could be \u201cdays away\u201d from potential medication shortages. However, the government issued a statement clarifying that this isn\u2019t happening yet. Still, pharmacists have already reported price spikes, which could be a sign of trouble to come, and antidepressants, HRT, and blood pressure drugs are among the drugs that could be affected. In retaliation for strikes by the US and Israel, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c78n6p09pzno\"><span>Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz<\/span><\/a><span>, a narrow strip through which 30 per cent of the world\u2019s oil passes, alongside supplies like fertiliser, which are vital for the production of food. This was an <\/span><span>obvious outcome of attacking Iran, which is why previous generations of war-mongering American politicians have never attempted it, however much they wanted to. But either the possibility didn\u2019t occur to the Trump administration, or they failed to take it seriously.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While we\u2019re yet to see the full effects of this war, partly due to Trump\u2019s ongoing manipulation of the stock market, an economic crisis of some kind is inevitable. It\u2019s not a question of whether it will happen, but of just how bad it will be. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/ng-interactive\/2026\/mar\/22\/iran-war-global-economy-donald-trump-oil-prices-inflation\"><span>some experts<\/span><\/a><span>, we could be facing a global recession or even a depression, and the knock-on effects are hard to predict.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The human toll of the war has already been catastrophic: Israel is ramping up its aggression against Lebanon and in many ways repeating the Gaza playbook, killing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cgme1j70294o\"><span>journalists<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/mar\/14\/lebanon-israeli-rockets-kill-healthcare-workers\"><span>healthcare workers<\/span><\/a><span>, displacing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rescue.org\/uk\/press-release\/one-million-people-displaced-across-lebanon-just-two-weeks-children-need-urgent\"><span>around a million people<\/span><\/a><span>and planning a long-term military occupation. Thousands of civilians in Iran have been killed, including an estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/press-releases\/brutality-war-measured-childrens-lives-hostilities-escalate-iran\"><span>165 school girls<\/span><\/a><span> in a single strike, with civilian deaths reported in Israel and across the Gulf.\u00a0<\/span><span>Keeping that in mind should be first and foremost, rather than worrying about the price of fast fashion and our summer holidays. However, it\u2019s still worth considering the economic fallout from the US and Israel\u2019s reckless decision to attack Iran. Below, we explain some of the ways the war will impact all of our lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7623543252884491542\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><strong>EVERYTHING WILL GET MORE EXPENSIVE<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span>The energy crisis is going to make everything more expensive, because oil is used in the production and transport of just about everything. In addition to the Strait of Hormuz being closed, there\u2019s a high possibility that the Houthis \u2013 a political and military organisation based in Yemen \u2013 will blockade the Red Sea, as it did between 2024 and 2025 in response to Israel\u2019s genocide in Gaza, in a measure which contributed to high inflation in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We\u2019re looking at increases in the price of everything you\u2019d expect, such as household energy bills, which in the UK could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/business\/energy-bills-iran-government-vat-claire-coutinho-b2948965.html\"><span>surge<\/span><\/a><span>by as much as \u00a3288 per year; groceries, which could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/uk-food-inflation-heading-towards-10-due-iran-war-industry-says-2026-04-01\/\"><span>rise<\/span><\/a><span> by as much as 10 per cent; petrol, which has already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn89zgx1vkvo\"><span>spiked<\/span><\/a><span> significantly, and clothes, with the international textile industry set to take a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.fashionnetwork.com\/news\/War-in-iran-how-will-it-affect-the-international-textile-trade-,1811987.html\"><span>major hit<\/span><\/a><span>. But some of the effects are a bit more diffuse. As a result of the crisis, mortgage lenders have already increased their rates, which isn\u2019t just a problem if you\u2019re a homeowner: landlords almost always pass these costs onto their tenants, so the price of rent, already at breaking point across Britain, could go even higher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><strong>WE COULD GET A FOUR-DAY WORK WEEK\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Many countries are struggling to access vital oil supplies from Southwest Asia and North Africa, which has led Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Pakistan to adopt a four-day workweek to save fuel and energy. Will this shift similarly occur in the UK? It\u2019s happened here before \u2013 in the early 1970s, we adopted a three-day workweek due to severe coal shortages \u2013 but Dr Wladislaw Rivkin, Professor in Organisational Behaviour at Trinity Business School, told <a href=\"http:\/\/philippines\"><em>Fortune<\/em><\/a> that he thinks it\u2019s unlikely this time around: \u201cI do not see this as a model for the US and UK, at least in the long term, because the current sharp rise in fuel cost is temporary\u201d. Even though he is apprehensive of this shift, he also suggests that we shouldn\u2019t rule it out entirely, depending on how the US\u2019s war on Iran develops.<\/p>\n<p><span>Whatever happens, more working from home seems likely. Earlier this week, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing <\/span>Dan J\u00f8rgensen urged people in the continent to \u201cwork from home where possible, <span>reduce highway speed limits by 10 kilometres [an hour], encourage public transport, alternate private car access&#8230; increase car sharing and adopt efficient driving practices.\u201d He added: \u201cThe more you can do to save oil \u2013 especially diesel and jet fuel \u2013 the better off we are.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><strong>YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAY MIGHT GET CANCELLED<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t booked a summer holiday yet, you might want to adjust your expectations and start thinking about a staycation. The price of jet fuel has <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/31\/world\/video\/iran-war-oil-jet-fuel-price-vrtc-ldn-digvid\">doubled<\/a> in recent weeks, airlines around the world are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2026\/03\/30\/thousands-of-flights-cancelled-as-jet-fuel-costs-soar\/\">cancelling<\/a> thousands of flights, and industry experts have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/mar\/26\/iran-war-us-gas-fuel-oil-fertilizer-prices\">warned<\/a> that fares are going to increase as summer approaches, with long-haul flights particularly affected. To deal with the crisis, some European leaders have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-gb\/money\/other\/europe-urges-fewer-flights-remote-working-as-iran-war-drains-oil-supplies\/ar-AA1ZTeyV?ocid=finance-verthp-feeds\">urging<\/a> people to take fewer flights. On the plus side, there\u2019s still time to convince yourself that a caravaning holiday in Wiltshire is just as fun as going to Tokyo or Mexico City.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><strong>&#8230;AND SO MIGHT MORE SPORTS GAMES AND GIGS<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The sports and entertainment industry is also taking a hit. The F1 has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/03\/29\/world\/middleeast\/iran-war-global-impact-economy-fuel.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share\">cancelled<\/a> some of its races amid missile attacks targeting Gulf nations. Artists such as Shakira and Christina Aguilera have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/03\/29\/world\/middleeast\/iran-war-global-impact-economy-fuel.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share\">postponed<\/a> shows in the region due to security concerns. There may also be a balloon shortage, as Qatar produces a third of the world\u2019s helium and production and exports have halted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><strong>THERE COULD BE MEDICATION SHORTAGES\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>As reported in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/nhs-medical-supplies-shortage-iran-war-b2949147.html\"><em>Independent<\/em><\/a> today, NHS chiefs are worried that we could be \u201cdays away\u201d from potential medication shortages. However, the government issued a statement clarifying that this isn\u2019t happening yet. Still, pharmacists have already reported price spikes, which could be a sign of trouble to come, and antidepressants, HRT, and blood pressure drugs are among the drugs that could be affected.
