He reaches into a bag and pulls out some beige leather loafers and holds them up to the camera. \u201cThey\u2019re vintage Diesel. They\u2019re pretty dope,\u201d he says, rotating the shoes so I can get a full 360 look \u2014 before mock-confessing a rock star problem of the highest order: \u201cI don\u2019t know how to tie my shoes, so I need Velcro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He picked them up earlier in the day at a vintage store in Barcelona, where he\u2019s video-chatting from his green room before a show. Instead of just bouncing from hotel to venue, Sombr, the stage name of Shane Michael Boose, is trying to make a habit of actually <em>seeing<\/em> the cities he\u2019s playing: finding a cool coffee shop, doing a little shopping, having a \u201cnice brunch\u201d before heading to the venue. He\u2019s about to perform his VIP soundcheck, the nightly pre-show experience where he does a Q&amp;A with fans and plays a song not on his usual setlist, and he\u2019s been practicing his espa\u00f1ol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>\u00a1Gracias por la oportunidad!<\/em>\u201d he says without a hint of self-consciousness. \u201cI\u2019m good at accents.\u201d He just got here from Milan. He\u2019s headed to Paris next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Ciao, bella! Grazie mille!<\/em>\u201d he says. \u201c<em>Je m\u2019appelle Sombr. Bonjour. Je t\u2019aime<\/em>\u2026 I have it all!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed: Few artists have the world in the cup of their hands right now like Sombr, the 20-year-old rock star who\u2019s got more passport stamps than he can comprehend and still squares off with his laces; who\u2019s got the lanky frame and messy curls of a member of The Strokes circa 2001 but also radio hits as irresistible as any pop girlie\u2019s; who will sing songs of devastating heartbreak while dressed, usually sans shirt, in a sparkling suit that even John Travolta in <em>Saturday Night Fever<\/em> might consider too much. And he\u2019s <em>loving it<\/em>. \u201cThis feels like a simulation,\u201d he says, pausing between his words like he\u2019s struggling to find the right ones. \u201cEven over a year ago, I was a signed artist, but no one knew who I was. Being a small fish in that huge pool, even then, it felt impossible \u2014 and you see everyone in L.A. trying to do it. I was like, \u2018Bro, I\u2019m never going to have a hit.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 nbP\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:125%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/3\/26\/e98f9378\/nylon_sombr_social-cover.png?w=268&amp;h=335&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 VBN\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Valentino clothing and necklace<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now, he\u2019s got several: the disco strut of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cZgUiR31m-Y&amp;list=RDcZgUiR31m-Y&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">\u201c12 to 12,\u201d<\/a> the melancholy surf-rock of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z0wT6CrEGYg&amp;list=RDz0wT6CrEGYg&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">\u201cUndressed,\u201d<\/a> the last-call breakup elegy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c8zq4kAn_O0&amp;list=RDc8zq4kAn_O0&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">\u201cBack to Friends.\u201d<\/a> They\u2019re all from his debut album, <em>I Barely Know Her<\/em>, which arrived last summer and earned him a Best New Artist nomination at this year\u2019s Grammys. In what feels like a blink, Sombr\u2019s brooding melodies and pining lyrics catapulted him from an if-you-know-you-know artist to a full-fledged teen heartthrob; anyone worried about the stereotype of the emotionally repressed Gen Z male can let out a sigh of relief thanks to songs like \u201cCanal Street,\u201d about the agony of trying to replace an ex (named after the New York City hot spot for knockoff designer goods): \u201cI try to go on dates \/ But none of them are you,\u201d he sings. \u201cI look for girls with your traits \/ But none of them are you.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"rs0 Dhu\"><p>\u201cEveryone always puts artists on these pedestals. I\u2019m just a normal motherf*cker. I\u2019m a little <i>too<\/i> normal.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That heart-forward storytelling quickly won over some high-profile listeners. It feels like in school when I would have a trio of inseparable friends,\u201d he says of his co-stars \u2014 and counts his fellow Best New Artist nominee Addison Rae as a pal after she played his love interest in the video for \u201c12 to 12.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s cool to be able to share those moments with people that you genuinely are a fan of,\u201d Sombr says. He likes that stardom today, at least for new artists, doesn\u2019t feel competitive \u2014 in fact, it feels to him like everyone\u2019s rooting for each other. \u201cI will always be a supporter of anyone who\u2019s putting themselves out there and doing their thing and making art.\u201d He grins: \u201cI\u2019ll always be a supporter. Tonight\u2019s show is at the Sant Jordi Club, a 4,600-person venue he booked last fall but likely outgrew sometime between making his television debut on <em>The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/em> in May (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PboALhmuYws&amp;list=RDPboALhmuYws&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">with a performance full of yearning close-ups<\/a>) and playing <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> in November (where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TDeFuw5mkb4&amp;list=RDTDeFuw5mkb4&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">he high-kicked across Studio 8H<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Papt156JPqo&amp;list=RDPapt156JPqo&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">climbed the scaffolding<\/a>). They\u2019ve tried to upgrade as many venues as possible across Europe; the day before our chat, he played a crowd nearly three times the size of tonight\u2019s at an arena in Madrid. And your chances of seeing him in a club-sized venue are sure to drop after he performs at Coachella this month. And I still deal with some issues that have to do with love.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The weekend was a flash of red carpets and run-ins with Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, and Tyler, The Creator. The blur of the evening didn\u2019t come into focus until later in the show, during the moving all-star tribute to D\u2019Angelo and Roberta Flack. \u201cI just started bawling in my mother\u2019s arms,\u201d he remembers. \u201cIt was like, \u2018Damn, I\u2019m really here, and I\u2019m not a spectator. I\u2019m down here on the floor. I\u2019m one of the artists.\u2019 That was just a crazy realization because everything moves so fast, and it\u2019s hard to let things sink in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The magnitude of the moment has stuck with him. \u201cThat\u2019s something they can never take away from me: I will always be a Grammy nominee,\u201d he continues. \u201cAnd I am someone who would have been happy doing anything creative as a job, as long as I could get by. There was no f*cking possibility that I could be a successful artist. You are told it\u2019s one in a million. He grew up on the Lower East Side \u2014 you know, that storied stomping ground of rock stars past \u2014 and learned how to play guitar from his dad, Andy, a successful event producer who\u2019s played in a number of indie bands and is also part of Sombr\u2019s behind-the-scenes team. Spend a few minutes digging around the internet, and you can find photos and videos of the elder Boose performing and realize how close the apple falls from the tree. Or you can poke around on TikTok and find clips of a young Sombr, towering over his classmates, performing in a youth theater production of <em>Seussical Jr.<\/em> and realize this guy was inevitably going to find the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Sombr attended the famed LaGuardia performing arts high school \u2014 alma mater of Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylon.com\/entertainment\/lola-tung-the-summer-i-turned-pretty-season-3-forbidden-fruits-interview\" class=\"T3D\">Lola Tung<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylon.com\/entertainment\/grace-van-patten-cover-story-tell-me-lies-season-3-interview\" class=\"T3D\">Grace Van Patten<\/a> \u2014 and began releasing music online at age 13 under the name Cherry Valley, which some sleuthing fans uncovered a few months into his rise. (You know you\u2019ve made it when the stans start combing your internet presence \u2014 just ask <em>Heated Rivalry<\/em> star and former teen YouTube vlogger Connor Storrie.) \u201cLook, I don\u2019t know how the f*ck y\u2019all found that, but the kid who made that project is definitely a very happy boy right now because all he wanted was a couple listeners,\u201d he says. \u201cHe would be really happy right now, knowing that. Although the music is really bad, he would be happy knowing that people are finally listening to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"rs0 Dhu\"><p>\u201cMy sister\u2019s still going to be a f*cking asshole to me, and my mom\u2019s still going to be telling me to do a chore. That will never change.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And it didn\u2019t take long for him to get good. While still a student, he adopted the moniker Sombr \u2014 a play on his initials, SMB \u2014 and released \u201cCaroline,\u201d a raw, wistful tune that picked up enough momentum on TikTok that labels started calling. In early 2023, he signed to Warner Records, which paired him with Tony Berg \u2014 the legendary producer who worked on <em>The Rocky Horror Picture Show<\/em> and Bette Midler projects in the \u201970s but is now better known to Gen Z as a close collaborator of Phoebe Bridgers. At the time, Sombr was dealing with the fallout of his first major heartbreak, the kind of relationship that feels like you\u2019re falling off of a cliff, and <em>I Barely Know Her<\/em>\u2019s 10 tracks loosely chronicle its full lifespan. (Yes, the title both captures the feeling of post-breakup estrangement <em>and<\/em> manages to be a dad-joke-y answer to his artist name.) \u201cIt was just pouring it all out,\u201d Sombr says. \u201cIt all came out around the same time, and I was just in a flow state.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:125.0165%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/3\/26\/ee2f0343\/98057_asa_nylonmag_sombr_002_09-srgb.jpg?w=375&amp;h=469&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Valentino clothing and necklace<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBack to Friends\u201d dropped in December of 2024, and within six months Sombr was topping the charts at alternative radio \u2014 the first of several No. 1s to his name. He fueled that momentum with relentless (mostly) self-aware promo, making \u201ca million f*cking TikToks every week,\u201d he says. \u201cEven if some people found it cringe, it\u2019s cringe until you win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On TikTok, Sombr is dedicated to being unserious. When Charlie Puth commented on his post, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@sombrsucks\/video\/7515883500000595230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">replied<\/a> and thanked Charli XCX instead. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@sombrsucks\/video\/7485902670549667118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">shot his shot (with a real basketball) at Tate McRae<\/a> after she used his song on her Instagram story. He has a whole shtick about pretending to be 6-foot-7 (he\u2019s only off by a few inches). During his stop in France, he appeared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@sombr\/video\/7613544963388787998?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">serenade the Mona Lisa with a lip-sync to \u201cHomewrecker.\u201d<\/a> Instead of working against the self-seriousness of his music, his wry, hyper-online sense of humor was the perfect companion. \u201cEveryone always puts artists on these pedestals. It\u2019s like, \u2018Bro, I\u2019m just like y\u2019all. I\u2019m just a normal motherf*cker,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m a little <em>too<\/em> normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, with more eyes on him than ever, he\u2019s aware of how easy it is for a joke to fail to translate. That\u2019s another rite of passage for a young star: realizing you can\u2019t talk to your (rapidly growing) audience quite the way you used to. The minute I sat down, there was a whole table of girls next to me. And they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh my God, Sombr, we went to your show in LA,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cI was like, \u2018I love you guys so much, but I\u2019m meeting someone, and I have to move to a different table.\u2019 I sent them a bottle of wine because I felt so f*cking awful, but I just had to.\u201d (He won\u2019t say if it was a date, though he later shares, \u201cI\u2019m still a man that feels emotions. I\u2019m still very single. But I have to always act like I\u2019m always being watched. Because I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This perhaps explains why a young star like him might actually enjoy the close watch of his dad-ager and mom, who try to be at as many shows as possible. \u201cThey\u2019re really the only people in the world that I can look at and be like, \u2018You guys aren\u2019t going to treat me any differently,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cMy sister\u2019s still going to be a f*cking asshole to me, and my mom\u2019s still going to be telling me to do a chore. That will never change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s trying not to mess with his creative process, either, as he works on his next album. So far, he says, the material draws influence from the Beatles and the Beach Boys with complex bridges and chord changes, mixed with a dash of \u201cnostalgic 2010s pop.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m staying true to my style, but I\u2019m definitely exploring,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd if the album flops, f*ck it. As long as I am happy with what I made.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:125.4295%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/3\/26\/4ec6dd52\/98057_asa_nylonmag_sombr_001_01-srgb.jpg?w=375&amp;h=470&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Valentino clothing and necklace<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"rs0 Dhu\"><p>\u201cI\u2019m not making money from this Coachella set, I\u2019m spending money on it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Flopping is unlikely: In February, he released \u201cHomewrecker,\u201d his poppiest song to date about feeling the spark again with an ex (despite their new partner) that marked a best-yet debut on the charts. In his lyrics, Sombr is mostly respectful of the other man in the picture; in conversation, he is less so. \u201cI was like, \u2018Bro I can be so much better than this fool,\u2019\u201d he says of his inspiration. And, apparently, the real-life subject of the song is not a fan: \u201cApparently he\u2019s f*cking pissed. He\u2019s mad. Hopefully, he doesn\u2019t come f*cking kill me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of a few moments in our conversation where you can\u2019t quite tell if he\u2019s being serious. A few days after our chat, at the 2026 BRIT Awards, a man rushed the stage and gave Sombr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2od_3mFVJjE&amp;list=RD2od_3mFVJjE&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">a shove mid-performance<\/a>. Though it was clearly staged \u2014 the guy was wearing a \u201cSombr is a homewrecker\u201d T-shirt, after all \u2014 Sombr kept the ruse up online in TikToks, posting videos with text like \u201ci\u2019m pretty sure the guy that just rushed the stage during my performance is the boyfriend of the girl that this song is about\u201d and \u201csomeone crashed my performance at the brits so I made the shirt he wore into merch.\u201d The man is, for better or worse, committed to the bit.<\/p>\n<p>But maybe that\u2019s all just cover for something a little sweeter. When I ask him where he sees himself in 10 years, his answer is simple. \u201cDoing the exact same thing: making music because that\u2019s what I love,\u201d he says. For all the Zoomer humor that surrounds his art, he is endearingly, almost painfully earnest about what it feels like to be living your dream.
