Opera gloves, fingerless gloves, rubber, mesh and satin \u2013 we saw them all during the SS26 and AW26 shows. It\u2019s no surprise to see gloves on the catwalk; they\u2019ve existed for thousands of years. But when they appear in bright yellow, the mind can\u2019t help but jump to one reference: washing-up gloves, or Marigolds as they\u2019re commonly known here in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>First sold in 1947, Marigolds soon became a kitchen staple in British households, with their recognisable colour evolving from the natural shade of latex rubber. Earlier this month, washing-up gloves made it to the <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> Oscars afterparty thanks to Emma Chamberlain, whose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/valentino\"><span>Valentino<\/span><\/a><span> pre-fall 2026 look included a pair of long yellow gloves. \u201cWhen I have the Oscars at 9 and the dishes at 11\u201d, read one of the comments on Valentino\u2019s Instagram <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DV80lW4CNYn\/?img_index=2\"><span>post<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chamberlain isn\u2019t the first celebrity to have worn rubber gloves on the red carpet. Last year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/photography\/gallery\/20675\/1\/julia-fox\"><span>Julia Fox<\/span><\/a><span> wore a pair of real, frilled washing-up gloves to the Grammys, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/lady-gaga\"><span>Lady Gaga<\/span><\/a><span> was famously memed following the 2015 Oscars, when she wore a custom <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/alaia\"><span>Ala\u00efa<\/span><\/a><span> gown styled with a pair of ruby red, heavy-duty gloves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"87155a99-0610-410a-8d47-b41e0138ecc7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442861.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.67\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Julia Fox at the Grammys 2025\" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442861.jpg\" width=\"2000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Julia Fox at the <span class=\"nowrap\">Grammys 2025<\/span><\/span><span class=\"credit\">Photo by Neilson Barnard\/Getty Images for The <span class=\"nowrap\">Recording Academy<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>During Paris Fashion Week\u2019s recent AW26 season, just a few days before Chamberlain stepped out in her Valentino Marigolds, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/sarah-burton\"><span>Sarah Burton<\/span><\/a><span> delivered her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69848\/1\/givenchy-aw26-fw26-paris-fashion-week-pfw-sarah-burton\"><span>third show<\/span><\/a><span> as creative director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/givenchy\"><span>Givenchy<\/span><\/a><span>. As one of the few female creative directors at a major luxury brand, Burton\u2019s work often celebrates the complexity of women, prioritising comfort, ease and adaptability. For AW26, she gave us a Givenchy woman for every occasion, whether it was a satin gown suitable for the opera, a tailored suit for the office, or a pair of Marigolds for doing the dishes (even women who can afford Givenchy have to do the washing up sometimes). Burton\u2019s gloves had been given the fashion treatment \u2013 they were exaggerated and bunched up around the wrists \u2013 but stayed true to that recognisable Marigold shade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"83708789-c183-482f-b1a0-b40600e548c6\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/0\/1440853.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.67\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Givenchy AW26\" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/0\/1440853.jpg\" width=\"2000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Givenchy AW26<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Givenchy<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Back in 2018, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/raf-simons\"><span>Raf Simons<\/span><\/a><span> made headlines with his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/calvin-klein\"><span>Calvin Klein<\/span><\/a><span> SS18 collection. \u201cThese rubber kitchen gloves somehow cost $390,\u201d wrote the <\/span><em><span>New York Post,<\/span><\/em><span> referring to a pair of pink arm-length gloves that Simons paired with a marigold yellow dress. It\u2019s a trend the Belgian designer brought to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/prada\"><span>Prada<\/span><\/a><span>, where, alongside co-creative director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/miuccia-prada\"><span>Miuccia Prada<\/span><\/a><span>, he showed vibrant gloves again at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/68740\/1\/prada-ss26-milan-fashion-week-mfw-miuccia-raf-simons\"><span>SS26<\/span><\/a><span>. They came in electric blue, purple and pink, as well as satin yellow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In Copenhagen<\/span><span>\u00a0during January\u2019s\u00a0AW26 ready-to-wear shows, Danish designer Nicklas Skovgaard presented a collection inspired by the 1937 Danish film<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><em><span>Mille, Marie og mig (Mille, Marie and I). <\/span><\/em><span>Beyond the film reference, there were elements of the 40s and 50s too, with <\/span><em><span>Vogue <\/span><\/em><span>describing the show as \u201cpaper-doll-meets-<\/span><em><span>Mad Men<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d. Here, there were two pairs of yellow gloves: one short biker-style pair, and one longer, lemon-yellow set.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"b6165db3-1c8c-4c47-af7c-b3630135af41\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1420\/4\/1424572.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.67\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Prada SS26\" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1420\/4\/1424572.jpg\" width=\"2000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Prada SS26<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Prada<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Perhaps the recent rise in yellow gloves on the runway is a mere coincidence, or perhaps it speaks to a wider trend. Since 2022, tradwives and their aesthetics have been slowly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/62099\/1\/trad-wives-are-lvling-up-nara-smith\"><span>gaining prominence<\/span><\/a><span> in the public eye. \u201cIf you\u2019re somehow unfamiliar, a tradwife \u2013 a portmanteau of \u2018traditional housewife\u2019 \u2013 is a woman who eschews gainful employment in favour of full-time domestic labour such as cooking, cleaning, and raising children, living off whatever \u2018allowance\u2019 their husband or partner doles out to them like it\u2019s 1954,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/63260\/1\/tradwives-in-this-economy-nara-smith-women-feminism-income-work\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span> Dazed\u2019s deputy editor Serena Smith in 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As it always does, the cultural landscape soon trickled down into fashion too. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/gallery\/36102\/5\/miu-miu-ss26\"><span>Miu Miu\u2019s SS26 collection<\/span><\/a><span> seemed to mimic the tradwife aesthetic. Retro floral prints styled with clashing pinafores and frou-frou collars looked distinctly like 1960s waitressing garb. Post show, Miuccia Prada explained that the collection had been a tribute to working women everywhere, not only those working in the home: \u201cthe apron contains the real difficult life of women in history, from factories to the home.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Elsewhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69190\/1\/august-barron-bror-vestbo-benjamin-interview-dazed-cover-winter-2025\">August Barron\u2019s<\/a> SS26 <em>Real Housewives <\/em>collection poked fun at the concept of suburban housewives, featuring dresses made from tablecloths and cardigans tied around models\u2019 heads, \u00e0 la <em>Grey Gardens. <\/em>We enjoyed the collection so much here at Dazed that we put it on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69190\/1\/august-barron-bror-vestbo-benjamin-interview-dazed-cover-winter-2025\">our Winter cover<\/a>. Thankfully, like Barron, there are several young designers working to subvert the housewife image. Swedish designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69757\/1\/petra-fagerstrom-diary-of-debut-london-fashion-week-aw26-fw26-lfw-harry-lambert\">Petra Fagerstr\u00f6m<\/a> used her 2025 graduate collection to tackle the trend: \u201cI want to create a woman who fractures the ideals of purity, passivity and cleanliness tied to the image of a traditional wife,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/66168\/1\/the-standout-csm-grad-coming-for-trad-wives-and-clean-girls\">told Dazed.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Meanwhile, barely graduated CSM MA designers Amber Pickup and Lydia Chelovska both use fashion as a way to challenge feminine stereotypes. The latter, Chelovska, included an iron and a hoover in her graduate collection, while Pickup\u2019s closing look, a wedding dress, read the words: \u201cAfter the \u2018I do\u2019, I don\u2019t cook, do laundry, do dishes, take out garbage,\u201d the list goes on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Whether we like it or not, tradwives have infiltrated fashion. But refreshingly, there are more young designers parodying them than luxury brands are upholding their ideals. As for the washing-up gloves, is the trend concerning? On the surface, yes. But then, the celebrities wearing them \u2013 Emma Chamberlain, Lady Gaga and Julia Fox \u2013 aren\u2019t exactly your stereotypical tradwives. In fact, they\u2019re almost the polar opposite. Nara Smith, attending the recent Miu Miu show wearing an SS26 pinafore, should be much more alarming than Julia Fox ironically donning a pair of Marigolds at the Grammys. Opera gloves, fingerless gloves, rubber, mesh and satin \u2013 we saw them all during the SS26 and AW26 shows. It\u2019s no surprise to see gloves on the catwalk; they\u2019ve existed for thousands of years. But when they appear in bright yellow, the mind can\u2019t help but jump to one reference: washing-up gloves, or Marigolds as they\u2019re commonly known here in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>First sold in 1947, Marigolds soon became a kitchen staple in British households, with their recognisable colour evolving from the natural shade of latex rubber. Earlier this month, washing-up gloves made it to the <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> Oscars afterparty thanks to Emma Chamberlain, whose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/valentino\"><span>Valentino<\/span><\/a><span> pre-fall 2026 look included a pair of long yellow gloves. \u201cWhen I have the Oscars at 9 and the dishes at 11\u201d, read one of the comments on Valentino\u2019s Instagram <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DV80lW4CNYn\/?img_index=2\"><span>post<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chamberlain isn\u2019t the first celebrity to have worn rubber gloves on the red carpet. As one of the few female creative directors at a major luxury brand, Burton\u2019s work often celebrates the complexity of women, prioritising comfort, ease and adaptability. For AW26, she gave us a Givenchy woman for every occasion, whether it was a satin gown suitable for the opera, a tailored suit for the office, or a pair of Marigolds for doing the dishes (even women who can afford Givenchy have to do the washing up sometimes). It\u2019s a trend the Belgian designer brought to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/prada\"><span>Prada<\/span><\/a><span>, where, alongside co-creative director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/miuccia-prada\"><span>Miuccia Prada<\/span><\/a><span>, he showed vibrant gloves again at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/68740\/1\/prada-ss26-milan-fashion-week-mfw-miuccia-raf-simons\"><span>SS26<\/span><\/a><span>. They came in electric blue, purple and pink, as well as satin yellow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In Copenhagen<\/span><span>\u00a0during January\u2019s\u00a0AW26 ready-to-wear shows, Danish designer Nicklas Skovgaard presented a collection inspired by the 1937 Danish film<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><em><span>Mille, Marie og mig (Mille, Marie and I). <\/span><\/em><span>Beyond the film reference, there were elements of the 40s and 50s too, with <\/span><em><span>Vogue <\/span><\/em><span>describing the show as \u201cpaper-doll-meets-<\/span><em><span>Mad Men<\/span><\/em><span>\u201d. Since 2022, tradwives and their aesthetics have been slowly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/62099\/1\/trad-wives-are-lvling-up-nara-smith\"><span>gaining prominence<\/span><\/a><span> in the public eye. \u201cIf you\u2019re somehow unfamiliar, a tradwife \u2013 a portmanteau of \u2018traditional housewife\u2019 \u2013 is a woman who eschews gainful employment in favour of full-time domestic labour such as cooking, cleaning, and raising children, living off whatever \u2018allowance\u2019 their husband or partner doles out to them like it\u2019s 1954,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/63260\/1\/tradwives-in-this-economy-nara-smith-women-feminism-income-work\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span> Dazed\u2019s deputy editor Serena Smith in 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As it always does, the cultural landscape soon trickled down into fashion too. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/gallery\/36102\/5\/miu-miu-ss26\"><span>Miu Miu\u2019s SS26 collection<\/span><\/a><span> seemed to mimic the tradwife aesthetic. Retro floral prints styled with clashing pinafores and frou-frou collars looked distinctly like 1960s waitressing garb. Post show, Miuccia Prada explained that the collection had been a tribute to working women everywhere, not only those working in the home: \u201cthe apron contains the real difficult life of women in history, from factories to the home.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Elsewhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69190\/1\/august-barron-bror-vestbo-benjamin-interview-dazed-cover-winter-2025\">August Barron\u2019s<\/a> SS26 <em>Real Housewives <\/em>collection poked fun at the concept of suburban housewives, featuring dresses made from tablecloths and cardigans tied around models\u2019 heads, \u00e0 la <em>Grey Gardens. <\/em>We enjoyed the collection so much here at Dazed that we put it on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69190\/1\/august-barron-bror-vestbo-benjamin-interview-dazed-cover-winter-2025\">our Winter cover<\/a>. Thankfully, like Barron, there are several young designers working to subvert the housewife image. Swedish designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69757\/1\/petra-fagerstrom-diary-of-debut-london-fashion-week-aw26-fw26-lfw-harry-lambert\">Petra Fagerstr\u00f6m<\/a> used her 2025 graduate collection to tackle the trend: \u201cI want to create a woman who fractures the ideals of purity, passivity and cleanliness tied to the image of a traditional wife,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/66168\/1\/the-standout-csm-grad-coming-for-trad-wives-and-clean-girls\">told Dazed.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Meanwhile, barely graduated CSM MA designers Amber Pickup and Lydia Chelovska both use fashion as a way to challenge feminine stereotypes. The latter, Chelovska, included an iron and a hoover in her graduate collection, while Pickup\u2019s closing look, a wedding dress, read the words: \u201cAfter the \u2018I do\u2019, I don\u2019t cook, do laundry, do dishes, take out garbage,\u201d the list goes on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Whether we like it or not, tradwives have infiltrated fashion. But refreshingly, there are more young designers parodying them than luxury brands are upholding their ideals. As for the washing-up gloves, is the trend concerning? On the surface, yes. But then, the celebrities wearing them \u2013 Emma Chamberlain, Lady Gaga and Julia Fox \u2013 aren\u2019t exactly your stereotypical tradwives. In fact, they\u2019re almost the polar opposite. Nara Smith, attending the recent Miu Miu show wearing an SS26 pinafore, should be much more alarming than Julia Fox ironically donning a pair of Marigolds at the Grammys.
