Colorado closed for the season yesterday, March 29.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Record<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/snowbrains\/posts\/-colorados-snowpack-is-important-for-much-more-than-just-skiing-\/1382131073932200\/\"> heat waves<\/a> have ravaged ski areas across the Western United States over the past few weeks.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/a-look-at-the-spring-phenomonon-of-wiggle-runs\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">A Look at the Spring Phenomenon of Wiggle Runs<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Despite this, the independent mountain was able to enjoy a great season lasting 117 days.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The season saw record visitations, epic powder days, and the grand opening of No Name Basin.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>One of my highlights of the season was when <a href=\"https:\/\/skimonarch.com\">Monarch<\/a> got the highest snow totals in the state from the storm in late January.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>People flocked to the mountain from far and wide, and it seemed like Monarch\u2019s busiest day in history.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Just a few days later, Monarch made history again by opening brand-new terrain on the east side Author<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Monarch saw just over 100\u2033 inches of snow this season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Despite this, the mountain was able to open No Name Basin for it\u2019s first season, as well as steep terrain in Mirkwood Basin.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Including the new terrain on the other side of the divide, Monarch was able to open 77\/80 trails for a large portion of the season.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The mountain benefitted greatly from <a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/monarch-mountain-co-report-16-inches-and-counting-at-monarch\/\">another storm<\/a> earlier this month, before the historic March heat wave took hold.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>High temperatures reached 80 in Salida last week, ravaging the snowpack and forcing the mountain to close earlier than typical.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure data-block=\"3\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Skiing on Sunday was all about soaking up the sun, staying on snow, and reminiscing about the short and sweet season.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>No Name Basin closed on March 22, and the south-facing terrain under the Breezeway lift was also closed on Sunday.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tango and Toddler off of Pioneer had decent coverage and fun slushy conditions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>More north-facing runs such as KC Cutoff and Quickdraw had better coverage and firmer snow.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The higher-elevation runs off of Panorama also had decent coverage, but it was clear that the trails were on their last legs.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Visitors sported fun outfits and enjoyed quick laps before on San Luis Mac n\u2019 Cheese, we gathered in the parking lot to watch the Gunbarrel Challenge.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At this classic Monarch closing day event, participants hike up the Gunbarrel trail and race down to the bottom.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It was a great day for a parking lot party, and the festivities did not end there.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>With live music in the lodge and tailgating all afternoon, this season closed out with a bang.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re sad to see it go so soon, but the stoke during this dismal season
