I knew it was going to be difficult to be 100 percent after the effort I did on Friday,\u201d Van der Poel told <em>FloBikes<\/em>. \u201cI think for next week, of course, it will be very difficult again, but I will try to be at my best there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It has been as clear as Belgian mud to get a clean read on exactly where he stands heading into Sunday\u2019s generational showdown on the Oude Kwaremont.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But it is a fool\u2019s errand to draw too many conclusions from this bumpy lead-up to the Ronde. Flanders and Paris-Roubaix are what count.<\/p>\n<p>Van der Poel has already confirmed he is at a winning level against the entire peloton.<\/p>\n<p>But the big question begs: Is he at a Poga\u010dar-beating level?<\/p>\n<h2>Bumpy spring of highs and lows<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_981060\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Van der Poel \" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"508\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-981060\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Z8D_9433-2-720x508.jpg?width=1920&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Van der Poel won at Saxo Classic, but it was closer than expected.<\/span> (Photo: Gruber Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Van der Poel\u2019s spring has been anything but a smooth ride.<\/p>\n<p>After ripping through the mud and muck to make cyclocross history, he blasted onto the road with big wins at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and looked to be in beast mode at Tirreno Adriatico with two stage victories.<\/p>\n<p>But then he crashed and was dropped at Milan-San Remo, where Poga\u010dar delivered the kind of audacious victory that everyone was expecting.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutchman rebounded to win E3 Saxo Classic, but only barely after being nearly reeled in after a long-range attack that, in previous years, would have sealed the race.<\/p>\n<p>Then came In Flanders Field, where Van der Poel detonated the race alongside Wout van Aert, but ultimately succumbed to team tactics as Alpecin-Premier Tech teammate Jasper Philipsen sprinted to victory.<\/p>\n<p>Which way to read it? For context, most top amateurs can struggle to produce 400 to 500 watts for even a <em>single minute<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Why break his usual radio silence around his power numbers? Was it a warning shot to rivals who might suddenly smell blood? I knew that with the legs I had, I shouldn\u2019t go too crazy. I rode a defensive race, a bit against my nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s 35km on flat roads from the Kemmelberg to the line, plenty of time for teams to organize a chase against two riders, especially with Philipsen riding the coattails in what was a free ride in the chase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I didn\u2019t have Jasper in the back, it would have been a different story,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>At E3, his solo move nearly unraveled. At Gent-Wevelgem, it never fully came together.<\/p>\n<p>Warning signs? (Photo: Gruber Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And then there is something waiting on Sunday that neither E3 nor Gent-Wevelgem can match \u2014 <em>prestige<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Van der Poel has built his career on peaking precisely when it matters.<\/p>\n<p>The Tour of Flanders is his favored terrain. A fourth victory would place him alone in the record books.<\/p>\n<p>Big moves tend to stick deeper at the monument distance of 278km.<\/p>\n<p>At the Ronde, it is only 13km from the final climb of the Paterberg to Oudenaarde.
