Rival such as Remco Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz did what they could to distance him yet Vingegaard was more than willing to go wheel to wheel on the tough Montj\u00fcic circuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"aspect-video\">\n<p>He sealed the overall and, with it, his sixth win of the season. He then had troubling news for his Giro d\u2019Italia rivals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think at the moment my shape is good without being at my very best yet,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I\u2019m optimistic for the Giro that I will be at a very, very high level there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given what he\u2019s already done this year, that pronouncement will be very concerning for others aiming for the maglia rosa.<\/p>\n<p>Vingegaard was winner of two stages this week, as well as the overall. He had the same tally in Paris-Nice, and is already in incredible shape. Underlining that is the fact that his winning margin in Paris-Nice was over four minutes, the highest since the 1930s.<\/p>\n<p>Next up? The last rider to do the double was Marco Pantani way back in 1998. With many big names trying and failing since then, it was thought highly unlikely the feat would ever be achieved again.<\/p>\n<p>However Tadej Poga\u010dar had other thoughts and confirmed in December 2023 that he would try to win both events.<\/p>\n<p>At the time he was coming off two consecutive Tour defeats by Vingegaard. Some suggested his decision to pinpoint the Giro was because he knew, deep down, that he couldn\u2019t beat the Dane.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder -mt-[30px] mb-[30px] flex min-h-[250px] w-full items-center justify-center\">\n<div class=\"w-full \">\n<div id=\"in-content-leaderboard-I1-P0-CMI0\" class=\"flex justify-center text-left\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Poga\u010dar duly went on to win the Giro, taking six stages along the way. He did the same in the Tour and also took the worlds for good measure.<\/p>\n<p>Vingegaard will be hoping for the same trajectory this year. Thus far he\u2019s replicated Poga\u010dar\u2019s win that year in Catalunya. He\u2019s also matched the six victories the Slovenian had by the same point in that season.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a big reflection of how well he is going. It\u2019s also something that gives him momentum as his season gathers speed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a lot of motivation, first of all,\u201d he said of his Catalunya success, \u201cbut also every victory gives more confidence. I\u2019ve had a great start to the year. He\u2019s done\u2014and won\u2014Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo, and will next target the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.<\/p>\n<p>After that he\u2019ll ride Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge and then finally start doing stage races, namely the Tour de Romandie and the Tour de Suisse.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to try to keep him fresh and enable a Tour\/Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a campaign, with the world championships also a target.<\/p>\n<p>As for Vingegaard, he\u2019s completely committed to his own grand tour double bid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously my next race will be the Giro. That\u2019s the first goal, but then also the Tour de France is also a really big goal of mine,\u201d he said. \u201cSo obviously I need to be in in in super shape for the Tour de France.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If he is, he will have a psychological boost at the grand depart. Following the team time trial on July 5, stage two takes the riders on many of the same roads around Montj\u00fcic.
