Police on Sunday questioned\u00a0a man arrested for attempted murder after a car plowed into pedestrians on a street in the central\u00a0\u00a0English<\/a>\u00a0city of Derby, injuring seven of them.<\/p>\n

Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred said police believe this is an “isolated incident” with “no wider risk to the public.”<\/p>\n

UK<\/a> counter-terrorism officers were supporting the investigation, but they were keeping an open mind on the motive of the incident.<\/p>\n

Aldred said the assistance\u00a0of counter-terror officers was “common practice for an incident of this nature.”<\/p>\n

“I would like to clarify that this does not mean the incident is currently being treated as terrorism,” she added.<\/p>\n

Shortly after the incident, the suspect was found and arrested “on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving.”<\/p>\n

The 36-year-old in custody is a Derby resident who has lived in the UK “for a number of years,” according to Aldred.<\/p>\n

The Interior Ministry refused to disclose the man’s immigration and citizenship status.<\/p>\n

“The police are leading the investigation and ministers are being kept updated as it progresses,” a spokeswoman for the ministry said.<\/p>\n

Seven suffer ‘serious but not life-threatening injuries’\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Police said seven people had suffered “serious but not life-threatening injuries” on Saturday when a car drove into pedestrians.<\/p>\n

According to Derbyshire Police, the car, a black Suzuki Swift, struck several people in Friar Gate around 9:30 p.m. local time (2130 GMT) on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The seven wounded people were treated by ambulance crews at the scene and taken to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Center in nearby Nottingham, police said.<\/p>\n

Catherine Atkinson, the Member of Parliament for Derby North, said she was “deeply shocked.”<\/p>\n

“My thoughts are with those injured and I’m grateful to our emergency services,” she said on social media.<\/p>\n
