Neck<\/span><\/em><span> shows a blonde, pony-tailed girl with a bright-orange butterfly perched on her finger, as people in the background fire off shotguns into the distance. It\u2019s this image that photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marischafetz\/\">Marisa Chafetz<\/a> says is \u201cthe perfect microcosm\u201d of the photobook which brings together her work with photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/morganneboulden\/\">Morganne Boulden<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Within its 64 pages, the project captures the co-existence of danger and safety that comes with growing up. \u201cI think coming of age in today\u2019s world is really scary. There\u2019s a lot of uncertainty and confusion, but we still have each other and can lean on our loved ones in times of need,\u201d Boulden says.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"0ef57763-ff56-4abe-96fe-b41600d747de\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442257.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Whispers Against My Neck\" class=\"img\" height=\"2004\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442257.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Marisa Chafetz and <span class=\"nowrap\">Morganne Boulden<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Between shots of people sparking up cigarettes together, tussling in mudpits or tangled in bedsheets, this contrast is most obviously shown within two particular shots. In the first, \u00a0the subject rests on the edge of their bed, gripping a handgun. In the second, they reappear in the same spot, but with no gun and a friend curling their hair.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhile beauty is generally at the forefront of the images, there is a subtle underbelly in the work that speaks to the present moment,\u201d explains Chafetz. This duality continues throughout, with gloomy and low-lit shots that show the subjects engaged in various forms of physicality. It\u2019s this contrast that Boulden feels \u201csays a lot about the way we experience intimacy in today\u2019s world \u2013 it\u2019s a scary place but it\u2019s beautiful with friends and family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"38a95f4c-e972-488d-940b-b41600d6db89\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1574\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442238.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.79\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Whispers Against My Neck\" class=\"img\" height=\"2000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442238.jpg\" width=\"1574\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Marisa Chafetz and <span class=\"nowrap\">Morganne Boulden<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>With this in mind, the images capture their friends, lovers, and families over the years. Although it doesn&#8217;t have a fixed location, there are some indications that the project was mostly shot in the depths of southern America \u2013 a photo of a girl wearing American boardshorts and flexing her bicep in one, or the derelict machinery that litters an underpass as a woman poses on the bonnet of a Cadillac in another. Regardless of location, the images have a timeless quality which speaks to something universal about the experience of growing up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After bringing together their work, the pair sifted through each other&#8217;s archives, selecting the ones they responded to the most. \u201cFor me, the images are an expression of what I found beautiful, complicated, and worthy of contemplative looking during my 20s. If anything, the book reveals mine and Morganne\u2019s commitment to living fully in the face of a lot of fear and hopelessness in this country,\u201d Chafetz says. \u201cThe collaborative process was a worthwhile lesson in learning to release control. The final product has a life of its own, outside of any singular vision.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s in this way that both of the photographer\u2019s works complement one another. \u201cI think we both have a similar understanding of tension and intimacy,\u201d Boulden says. These themes are drawn together by the project\u2019s title, chosen by project curator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jessexfeinman\/?hl=en\">Jesse Feinman<\/a>, which he describes as \u201can attempt to speak to physical closeness [&#8230;] and what you learn about yourself (or each other) in those moments and experiences\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"c9cf598d-5a7a-4cf9-a665-b41600d74590\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442256.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.25\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Whispers Against My Neck\" class=\"img\" height=\"2408\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442256.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Marisa Chafetz and <span class=\"nowrap\">Morganne Boulden<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>While this discovery is ongoing, nature is a throughline within the project \u2013 whether it\u2019s tangled and knotted branches, the sunset falling through a silt fence or a snow-covered graveyard. \u201cThe landscape is the backdrop to all our human drama. It is the grandest possible context for any narrative, visual or otherwise,\u201d Chafetz explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At times, it\u2019s easy to mistake a stillness within the project for an idleness. But while some subjects are laid across unmade beds, many shots were taken in moments of action, the middle of gunfire or within the writhing pit of an indie-rock show. It\u2019s this image that photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marischafetz\/\">Marisa Chafetz<\/a> says is \u201cthe perfect microcosm\u201d of the photobook which brings together her work with photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/morganneboulden\/\">Morganne Boulden<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Within its 64 pages, the project captures the co-existence of danger and safety that comes with growing up. \u201cI think coming of age in today\u2019s world is really scary. There\u2019s a lot of uncertainty and confusion, but we still have each other and can lean on our loved ones in times of need,\u201d Boulden says.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"0ef57763-ff56-4abe-96fe-b41600d747de\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442257.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Whispers Against My Neck\" class=\"img\" height=\"2004\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442257.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Marisa Chafetz and <span class=\"nowrap\">Morganne Boulden<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Between shots of people sparking up cigarettes together, tussling in mudpits or tangled in bedsheets, this contrast is most obviously shown within two particular shots. In the first, \u00a0the subject rests on the edge of their bed, gripping a handgun. In the second, they reappear in the same spot, but with no gun and a friend curling their hair.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhile beauty is generally at the forefront of the images, there is a subtle underbelly in the work that speaks to the present moment,\u201d explains Chafetz. This duality continues throughout, with gloomy and low-lit shots that show the subjects engaged in various forms of physicality. It\u2019s this contrast that Boulden feels \u201csays a lot about the way we experience intimacy in today\u2019s world \u2013 it\u2019s a scary place but it\u2019s beautiful with friends and family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"38a95f4c-e972-488d-940b-b41600d6db89\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1574\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442238.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.79\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Whispers Against My Neck\" class=\"img\" height=\"2000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442238.jpg\" width=\"1574\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Marisa Chafetz and <span class=\"nowrap\">Morganne Boulden<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>With this in mind, the images capture their friends, lovers, and families over the years. Although it doesn&#8217;t have a fixed location, there are some indications that the project was mostly shot in the depths of southern America \u2013 a photo of a girl wearing American boardshorts and flexing her bicep in one, or the derelict machinery that litters an underpass as a woman poses on the bonnet of a Cadillac in another. Regardless of location, the images have a timeless quality which speaks to something universal about the experience of growing up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After bringing together their work, the pair sifted through each other&#8217;s archives, selecting the ones they responded to the most. \u201cFor me, the images are an expression of what I found beautiful, complicated, and worthy of contemplative looking during my 20s. If anything, the book reveals mine and Morganne\u2019s commitment to living fully in the face of a lot of fear and hopelessness in this country,\u201d Chafetz says. \u201cThe collaborative process was a worthwhile lesson in learning to release control. The final product has a life of its own, outside of any singular vision.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s in this way that both of the photographer\u2019s works complement one another. \u201cI think we both have a similar understanding of tension and intimacy,\u201d Boulden says. These themes are drawn together by the project\u2019s title, chosen by project curator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jessexfeinman\/?hl=en\">Jesse Feinman<\/a>, which he describes as \u201can attempt to speak to physical closeness [&#8230;] and what you learn about yourself (or each other) in those moments and experiences\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"c9cf598d-5a7a-4cf9-a665-b41600d74590\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442256.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.25\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Whispers Against My Neck\" class=\"img\" height=\"2408\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442256.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Marisa Chafetz and <span class=\"nowrap\">Morganne Boulden<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>While this discovery is ongoing, nature is a throughline within the project \u2013 whether it\u2019s tangled and knotted branches, the sunset falling through a silt fence or a snow-covered graveyard. \u201cThe landscape is the backdrop to all our human drama. It is the grandest possible context for any narrative, visual or otherwise,\u201d Chafetz explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At times, it\u2019s easy to mistake a stillness within the project for an idleness. But while some subjects are laid across unmade beds, many shots were taken in moments of action, the middle of gunfire or within the writhing pit of an indie-rock show.
