Police were alerted at 12:51 p.m. but rescue services did not reach the remote site until 50 minutes later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All five individuals were rescued, but three sustained injuries.<\/strong> Two Finnish nationals suffered minor injuries and were transported to hospital in Kiruna, while a 24-year-old Norwegian man was seriously injured and later transferred to Norway for further treatment. \u201cIt was quite chaotic,\u201d mountain rescue operations manager Erik Lidstr\u00f6m said in an interview with Swedish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svt.se\/nyheter\/lokalt\/norrbotten\/snoskoterforare-utloste-stor-lavin-pa-rubens-vagg\">media outlet SVT<\/a>. Recent conditions have led to a surge in human-triggered avalanches, the agency reported. \u201cWe\u2019ve had an incredible number of avalanches triggered by skiers, snowmobilers, and our own employees during fieldwork,\u201d said avalanche expert Mattias Tarestad of SVELAV.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Located deep in Sweden\u2019s far north, near the Norwegian border, Riksgr\u00e4nsen is one of Europe\u2019s most unique ski destinations.<\/strong> Located \u2014 as the name Riksgr\u00e4nsen (English: \u201cnational border\u201d) implies \u2014 at the border between Norway and Sweden, the ski area is known for its long season, often running into June, thanks to its remote Arctic setting. The resort attracts advanced skiers, freeriders, and snowmobile enthusiasts seeking steep terrain and backcountry access. It\u2019s a consequence of ignorance and a willingness to take risks, and young people are often involved,\u201d he explained. He stressed the importance of reading and observing avalanche bulletins and not to underestimate the danger, or decide to take the risk anyway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Despite the severity of the slide, the outcome could have been far worse.<\/strong> All five buried individuals were successfully located and extricated, a testament to both the rescue response and likely the presence of safety equipment and training of those in the backcountry.
