{"id":1848999,"date":"2026-03-26T20:02:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T17:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1848999"},"modified":"2026-03-26T20:02:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T17:02:11","slug":"caleb-williams-iceman-trademark-request-challenged-by-nba-legend-george-gervin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1848999","title":{"rendered":"Caleb Williams\u2019 \u2018Iceman\u2019 trademark request challenged by NBA legend George Gervin"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"Article_ContentContainer__jBNW3 article-content-container bodytext1\">\n<p>Basketball Hall of Famer George Gervin is contesting a request to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7131801\/2026\/03\/19\/caleb-williams-iceman-trademark-bears\/\">trademark the nickname \u201cIceman\u201d<\/a> by Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.<\/p>\n<p>Gervin, an NBA and ABA legend who played for the Virginia Squires, San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls during his 14-year career in the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/bears\/2026\/03\/26\/bears-caleb-williams-george-gervin-iceman-trademark-nickname-already-taken-nfl-quarterback-aba-nba-basketball-san-antonio-spurs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">told the Chicago Sun-Times<\/a> on Wednesday that \u201cwe\u2019ve already got one \u2018Iceman.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper article-treatment\">\n<div class=\"ad-slug-container\">\n<p class=\"ad-slug\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mid1\" data-position=\"mid1\" class=\"ad place-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got nothing but respect for (Williams),\u201d Gervin told the Sun-Times. \u201cHe\u2019s already proved greatness, and his potential upside is great. Like an \u2018Iceman.\u2019 But that name is taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"article-pickem\">\n<p>Williams had the label bestowed upon him after a 2025-26 NFL season filled with late-game comebacks and clutch plays. Rubbing his shoulders as if he were cold became a common celebration for Williams as he led the Bears to the NFC Divisional round, and a pair of trademark applications he filed last week cover the term \u201cIceman\u201d and a logo featuring the name.<\/p>\n<p>Gervin, however, has used the nickname since teammate Roland \u201cFatty\u201d Taylor bestowed it upon him during Gervin\u2019s ABA debut in 1973. Gervin began using it for commercial purposes in 1979. Despite decades of using the moniker, however, Gervin never held an official trademark from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office because he thought one was already in place. His manager attributed the oversight to the death of a business associate, according to the Sun-Times.<\/p>\n<div data-ath-video-stream=\"0O7xbojHci7wrBX\" data-horizontal=\"9\" data-vertical=\"16\" data-restricted-countries=\"BI,BY,CD,CF,CU,IQ,IR,KP,LB,LY,ML,NI,RU,SD,SO,SS,SY,UA,VE,YE,ZW\" data-restricted-countries-mode=\"block\" data-thumbnail-url style=\"padding:0\">\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:764px\"><\/div>\n<p>      <span data-type=\"application\/dash+xml\" data-source=\"https:\/\/video.nyt.com\/athletic\/streams\/0O7xbojHci7wrBX\/IZpRcuJZMFDW\/IZpRcuJZMFDW.mpd\"><\/span><br \/>\n      <span data-type=\"application\/x-mpegURL\" data-source=\"https:\/\/video.nyt.com\/athletic\/streams\/0O7xbojHci7wrBX\/IZpRcuJZMFDW\/IZpRcuJZMFDW.m3u8\"><\/span>\n    <\/div>\n<p>Once Williams filed his trademark request, Gervin moved to submit <a href=\"https:\/\/tmsearch.uspto.gov\/search\/search-results\/99715702\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">his own applications<\/a> for the use of \u201cIceman\u201d and \u201cIceman 44\u201d within the sports realm. Both are seeking the right to use the nickname in a variety of apparel and entertainment services, such as trading cards.<\/p>\n<div id=\"top-league-content-root\"><\/div>\n<p>    {&#8220;endpoint&#8221;:&#8221;https:\/\/api-prd-nyt.theathletic.com\/graphql&#8221;}<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tmsearch.uspto.gov\/search\/search-results\/99704834\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Williams\u2019 trademark requests<\/a> also include two silhouettes that show an outline of the quarterback throwing a leaping fourth-down pass to Rome Odunze in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/game\/chicago-bears-vs-green-bay-packers\/qPNP0aRDWn1rS8Eo\/\">Bears\u2019 Wild-Card win<\/a> against the Green Bay Packers.<\/p>\n<p>Gervin was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gervige01.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a nine-time NBA All-Star<\/a>, five-time All-NBA First Team selection, four-time ABA All-Star and four-time NBA scoring champion between 1977 and 1982. He was chosen for the 50th and 75th NBA anniversary teams, and the Spurs retired his number, 44, in 1987. A Basketball Hall of Fame induction followed in 1996. In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/2997739\/2021\/12\/16\/nba-75-at-no-42-george-iceman-gervin-was-a-cool-scoring-machine-famous-for-his-finger-roll-and-body-control\/\"><em>The Athletic<\/em> ranked him<\/a> as the 42nd greatest player in NBA history.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper article-treatment\">\n<div class=\"ad-slug-container\">\n<p class=\"ad-slug\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mid2\" data-position=\"mid2\" class=\"ad place-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While he never won a championship, Gervin is one of just four NBA guards to average 30 points per game and make 50 percent of his field goal attempts in a season. He shares that distinction with Michael Jordan, Stephen Curry and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.<\/p>\n<p>Gervin also appeared alongside Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet as a table tennis club owner in 2025\u2019s \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d which was nominated for nine Academy Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Williams has not commented on the trademark duel, but approved of the \u201cIceman\u201d title last season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s interesting, to be honest, when you think of ice, ice is still, ice looks calm, but underneath is pure energy,\u201d Williams said during an interview with \u201cFox NFL Sunday\u201d in November. \u201cThat\u2019s the same mindset I have. In those moments, I feel at my calmest on the outside, but there\u2019s a lot going on inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A decision on the competing applications is unlikely anytime soon. According to trademark attorney Josh Gerben, the trademark process usually takes between 14 and 18 months.
