Waves<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/heres-everything-announced-in-todays-30th-anniversary-pokemon-presents-showcase\">even more reveals<\/a>. But we&#8217;re not done yet: yesterday, The Pok\u00e9mon Company announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/pokemon-stadium-alike-new-game-pokemon-champions-gets-a-2026-release-date-in-new-action-packed-gameplay-trailer\">Pok\u00e9mon Champions<\/a> will (try to) evolve the video game franchise&#8217;s competitive scene.<\/p>\n<p>On 24th March, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pokemon.com\/us\/pokemon-news\/pokemon-champions-releases-on-nintendo-switch-and-nintendo-switch-2-on-april-8-2026\">official Pok\u00e9mon website<\/a> outlined the release plans for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/games\/pokemon-stadium\">Stadium<\/a>-alike spinoff, which is targeting Nintendo Switch and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/platforms\/switch-2\">Switch 2<\/a>, as well as mobile phones. It looks like it&#8217;ll only descend on the hybrid consoles on 8th April, though, with a mobile release coming later. Pok\u00e9mon captured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/games\/pokemon-go\">Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/games\/pokemon-scarlet-and-violet\">Scarlet &amp; Violet<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/games\/pokemon-legends-z-a\">Legends: Z-A<\/a> can make the jump to Champions through the Home service. Pok\u00e9mon Go players, however, will not be able to transfer their creatures into the new service via Home. Okay, sounds simple enough. The first &#8220;but&#8221; here is that Pok\u00e9mon Home already has its own set of limitations if you don&#8217;t use the paid <a href=\"https:\/\/home.pokemon.com\/en-us\/premium\/\">Premium plan<\/a> (like not being able to store more than 30 Pok\u00e9mon or move them from the Bank, which is a big deal if you&#8217;re seriously considering the competitive side of Pok\u00e9mon and exchanging your favourites between the different supported games).<\/p>\n<p>Okay, let&#8217;s assume you&#8217;re fine with that and go for the cheap 12-month plan, which is only $15.99 at the time of writing. Considering the game is built around the idea of putting your own Pok\u00e9mon from other games under the same roof &#8211; and Home doesn&#8217;t deliver on its promise without having you pay for the full service &#8211; it seems that staying competitive with a hand-picked team of Pok\u00e9mon, while also gaining the rewards offered by Champions &#8211; won&#8217;t be cheap.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"injection_placeholder\" data-position=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>All this, plus the lingering questions around how you can actually put together a decent team as a strictly free-to-play player, makes the arrival of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/pokemon-champions-launches-next-month-with-paid-upgrade-pack-to-support-early-progression\">the long-awaited turn-based battler<\/a> a more complicated prospect than &#8216;find your dream team and start battling&#8217;.
