has revealed that she first met Rafael Nadal by accident just days before she officially joined the Spaniard\u2019s academy in Mallorca.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-features\/rafa-nadal-academy-junior-grand-slam-success-alex-eala-and-ivan-ivanov\">World No 29 Eala is among the most prominent players to have progressed and graduated through the Rafa Nadal Academy<\/a>, which is based in the tennis icon\u2019s hometown in Mallorca.<\/p>\n<p>The Filipina has become one of the biggest stars in tennis ever since her breakout run at the Miami Open twelve months ago, and still trains at the academy when she is not travelling to tournaments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/alex-eala-shares-great-piece-of-advice-she-received-from-rafael-nadal\">Eala has previously spoken about how Nadal is her tennis idol and how the 22-time Grand Slam champion has often offered her advice<\/a>, though it appears her first meeting with the Spaniard came in rather unusual circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than first meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/rafael-nadal\">Nadal<\/a> in Manacor, the 20-year-old has revealed in a recent interview with <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yH5k9GzV-CE&amp;t=10s\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Served<\/em><\/a> that she and her family stumbled upon the tennis great whilst travelling to the academy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, the first interaction with Rafa, like in the academy space, around that time, was not actually in the academy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore, we did a trial, we\u2019d go there like: \u2018One week, we\u2019ll see how it goes.\u2019 So my parents and my brother, and I, we flew over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Madrid airport, we just happen to pass by Rafa on the way to his Academy. A good way to start, I would say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nadal has publicly congratulated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/alex-eala\">Eala<\/a> for a number of her recent successes,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/rafael-nadal-reflects-letting-go-tennis-surprise-hit-alex-eala\"> and the two shared a special practice session during the off-season ahead of 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Filipina admits that she still finds it difficult to talk to the 39-year-old whenever they do spend time together.<\/p>\n<p>Eala added: \u201cAfter that, I don\u2019t really remember. He\u2019s just there a lot, and he\u2019s very down to earth when you talk to him, of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asks questions and things like that, but it\u2019s just [that] he\u2019s Rafa, so you\u2019re always going to be scared. Like I\u2019m always still scared \u2014 I don\u2019t know what to say, I always get very tongue-tied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll let you know, it doesn\u2019t get better, or at least, it doesn\u2019t get easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eala was recently in action at the Miami Open, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/everything-alex-eala-said-after-miami-open-defeat-karolina-muchova\">where she fell to a heavy 6-0, 6-2 defeat against 13th seed Karolina Muchova in the fourth round<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/wta-tour\/miami-open-alex-ealas-prize-money-ranking-points-revealed-after-emphatic-exit\">Defeat for the 20-year-old means that she will drop back outside the top 40 of the WTA Rankings next week<\/a>, with Eala only able to defend 120 of the 390 ranking points from her run to the semi-final twelve months ago.<\/p>\n<p>However, she will have the chance to bounce back when she kickstarts her clay-court season at the Linz Open, a WTA 500 event being held in two weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want more from Tennis365?
