They guide aircraft, ships, cars and trucks, or tourists looking for a place to eat. But they also play a central role in war.<\/p>\n<h2>How do satellites tell you where you are?<\/h2>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">At its core, satellite navigation is a matter of time. GNSS satellites carry\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">extremely precise\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">atomic clocks and constantly broadcast two key pieces of information: their exact position in orbit and the exact moment the signal was sent.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Meanwhile, on Earth, r<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">eceiver<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">like<\/span>\u00a0<span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">your<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0smartphone<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">,<\/span>\u00a0<span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">car<\/span>\u00a0<span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">or scooter<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, or\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">an\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">air<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">plane or ship<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">pick up these\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">signals\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">determine<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0their exact position.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">They do that\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">with<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0signals\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">from the four<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0satellites<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">,<\/span>\u00a0<span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">provid<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">ing<\/span>\u00a0<span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">data on<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0latitude,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">longitude<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0and altitude \u2014 plus one to smooth out any timing errors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">GNSS\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">technology\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">is highly\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">accurate<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0and fast.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">It is<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0deeply embedded in everyday life. But it\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">also\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">comes with\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/space-law-stuck-in-the-past-space-security\/a-73932818\">a hidden\u00a0fragility<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">&#8220;Signals from global navigation satellite systems are quite vulnerable,&#8221; Dana Goward, president of the<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0Resilient Navigation and Timing Foundation<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0in the US<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, told DW.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">&#8220;They are exceptionally weak \u2014 meaning that any radio noise near their frequency, accidental or malicious, can interfere with reception,&#8221; said Goward. &#8220;I am confident that there are people in every government who understand the problem. The challenge is getting leadership to both understand and act to reduce the risk.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Four global navigation powers: US, Russia, Europe, China<\/h2>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">The first two global navigation systems were developed in the 1970s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0during the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/cold-war\/t-38208135\">Cold War<\/a> between the US and the then-<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/soviet-union\/t-63006351\">Soviet Union<\/a> .<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">The US<\/span>\u00a0<span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">develop<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">ed<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0GPS<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">became<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0the first satellite navigation network to reach full global coverage. It\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">is<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0the most widely used navigation system in the world<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Around the same time,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Soviet Russia\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">developed GLONASS.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Then, w<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">hen\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">in the early 2000s\u00a0the European Union decided that relying solely on GPS le<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">ft<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0Europe too dependent on US strategic infrastructure,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0it\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">bega<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">n building Galileo.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\"><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/china\/t-18480887\">China&#8217;s BeiDou system<\/a> is the newest of the four networks.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">As in Europe,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0Chinese military planners\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">wanted to reduce their reliance on the US&#8217;s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0GPS.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">The four systems are\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">very similar<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, and &#8220;dual-use&#8221; \u2014 designed\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">for\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">civilian and military<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0purposes<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">&#8220;GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo all use very similar orbits<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0with a similar number of s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">atellites\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">at around 19,000 to 23,000 kilometers altitude,&#8221; said Malcolm Macdonald, a professor of satellite engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. &#8220;BeiDou augments\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">[its system with]<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0higher altitude orbits to support local coverage over Asia.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Each system can ping to any point on Earth at any one time<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, even if\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0as small as your wristwatch<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">&#8220;Most devices will use multiple constellations<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0[of satellites]<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">. It depends on the device, for example<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0my\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">own\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">smart<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">watch can use GPS and<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0GLONASS<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0and I can tell it to use either, or both.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Japan and <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/india-launches-heavy-satellite-as-it-eyes-human-space-flight\/a-75292128\">India<\/a> own and\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">operate<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0similar systems, but\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">theirs do not cover the entire planet. It\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">is<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0the most widely used navigation system in the world<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Around the same time,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Soviet Russia\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">developed GLONASS.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Then, w<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">hen\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">in the early 2000s\u00a0the European Union decided that relying solely on GPS le<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">ft<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0Europe too dependent on US strategic infrastructure,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0it\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">bega<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">n building Galileo.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\"><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/china\/t-18480887\">China&#8217;s BeiDou system<\/a> is the newest of the four networks.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">As in Europe,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0Chinese military planners\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">wanted to reduce their reliance on the US&#8217;s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0GPS.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">The four systems are\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">very similar<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, and &#8220;dual-use&#8221; \u2014 designed\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">for\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">civilian and military<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0purposes<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">&#8220;GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo all use very similar orbits<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0with a similar number of s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">atellites\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">at around 19,000 to 23,000 kilometers altitude,&#8221; said Malcolm Macdonald, a professor of satellite engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. &#8220;BeiDou augments\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">[its system with]<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0higher altitude orbits to support local coverage over Asia.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Each system can ping to any point on Earth at any one time<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, even if\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0as small as your wristwatch<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">&#8220;Most devices will use multiple constellations<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0[of satellites]<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">. Militaries also use navigation satellites to control drones.<\/p>\n<p>But this has made satellites a target themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In conflicts, such as the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russias-war-in-ukraine\/t-60931789\">Russia-Ukraine war<\/a>, both sides have used electronic warfare tactics, like &#8220;<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russia-accused-of-gps-jamming-after-aircraft-disrupted\/a-68964307\">jamming,<\/a>&#8221; interfering\u00a0with satellite navigation signals to disrupt their transmission, and &#8220;spoofing,&#8221; deceiving\u00a0GPS-based systems on the ground.\u00a0<span data-teams=\"true\">Spoofing is more difficult than jamming,\u00a0but it offers the opportunity to baffle the other side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">&#8220;Your navigation system may be saying that you are moving at 400 knots and leaving Helsinki airport, where in reality, you are in a car travelling at 120 kilometers-an-hour outside Berlin,&#8221; said Thomas Withington, an electronic warfare analyst at the UK&#8217;s Royal United Services Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">The technique could be used to hide the location of<span data-teams=\"true\">, for example,<\/span>\u00a0a <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/adrift-russia-tanker-risks-mediterranean-ecological-disaster\/a-76460869\">Russian shadow fleet<\/a> that is trying to transit a certain region and remain undetected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has also been used to inject small errors into a ship&#8217;s location as it transits the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/strait-of-hormuz\/t-76193780\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, which then causes that ship to enter a country&#8217;s territorial waters by mistake, allowing that country to board and force it to shore for illegal entry,&#8221; said Macdonald.<\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Goward said this was potentially a bigger threat for Europe and the US than Russia and China<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, because while\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Russia and China have &#8220;domestic, terrestrial systems to complement and backup GNSS, the<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0West does not.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">And the &#8220;frustrating thing&#8221; is that there is no one technology that will effectively neutralize the problem that GNSS disruption causes, said Withington<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">There have been attempts\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">to develop<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0technological alternatives to GNSS.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">But for now<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, said Withington,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">one of the &#8220;most expedient&#8221; options in war\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">is &#8220;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">simply hunting down the jammer and destroying it.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Edited by: Zulfikar Abbany<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you have ever used a smartphone map or watched a delivery vehicle move across a tracking app, you have used GPS.<\/p>\n<p>What many people do not realize is that GPS \u2014 the US&#8217;s\u00a0Global Positioning System \u2014 is only one part of a broader family known as global navigation satellite systems (GNSS).<\/p>\n<p>Four global <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/satellites\/t-64645143\">satellite<\/a> systems circle Earth. It\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">is<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0the most widely used navigation system in the world<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Around the same time,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Soviet Russia\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">developed GLONASS.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Then, w<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">hen\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">in the early 2000s\u00a0the European Union decided that relying solely on GPS le<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">ft<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0Europe too dependent on US strategic infrastructure,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0it\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">bega<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">n building Galileo.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\"><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/china\/t-18480887\">China&#8217;s BeiDou system<\/a> is the newest of the four networks.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">As in Europe,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0Chinese military planners\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">wanted to reduce their reliance on the US&#8217;s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0GPS.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">The four systems are\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">very similar<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, and &#8220;dual-use&#8221; \u2014 designed\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">for\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">civilian and military<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0purposes<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">&#8220;GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo all use very similar orbits<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0with a similar number of s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">atellites\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">at around 19,000 to 23,000 kilometers altitude,&#8221; said Malcolm Macdonald, a professor of satellite engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. &#8220;BeiDou augments\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">[its system with]<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0higher altitude orbits to support local coverage over Asia.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Each system can ping to any point on Earth at any one time<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, even if\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0as small as your wristwatch<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">&#8220;Most devices will use multiple constellations<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0[of satellites]<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">. It depends on the device, for example<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0my\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">own\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">smart<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">watch can use GPS and<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0GLONASS<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0and I can tell it to use either, or both.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Japan and <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/india-launches-heavy-satellite-as-it-eyes-human-space-flight\/a-75292128\">India<\/a> own and\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">operate<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0similar systems, but\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">theirs do not cover the entire planet. Militaries also use navigation satellites to control drones.<\/p>\n<p>But this has made satellites a target themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In conflicts, such as the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russias-war-in-ukraine\/t-60931789\">Russia-Ukraine war<\/a>, both sides have used electronic warfare tactics, like &#8220;<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russia-accused-of-gps-jamming-after-aircraft-disrupted\/a-68964307\">jamming,<\/a>&#8221; interfering\u00a0with satellite navigation signals to disrupt their transmission, and &#8220;spoofing,&#8221; deceiving\u00a0GPS-based systems on the ground.\u00a0<span data-teams=\"true\">Spoofing is more difficult than jamming,\u00a0but it offers the opportunity to baffle the other side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">&#8220;Your navigation system may be saying that you are moving at 400 knots and leaving Helsinki airport, where in reality, you are in a car travelling at 120 kilometers-an-hour outside Berlin,&#8221; said Thomas Withington, an electronic warfare analyst at the UK&#8217;s Royal United Services Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">The technique could be used to hide the location of<span data-teams=\"true\">, for example,<\/span>\u00a0a <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/adrift-russia-tanker-risks-mediterranean-ecological-disaster\/a-76460869\">Russian shadow fleet<\/a> that is trying to transit a certain region and remain undetected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has also been used to inject small errors into a ship&#8217;s location as it transits the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/strait-of-hormuz\/t-76193780\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, which then causes that ship to enter a country&#8217;s territorial waters by mistake, allowing that country to board and force it to shore for illegal entry,&#8221; said Macdonald.<\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Goward said this was potentially a bigger threat for Europe and the US than Russia and China<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, because while\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">Russia and China have &#8220;domestic, terrestrial systems to complement and backup GNSS, the<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0West does not.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">And the &#8220;frustrating thing&#8221; is that there is no one technology that will effectively neutralize the problem that GNSS disruption causes, said Withington<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">There have been attempts\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">to develop<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">\u00a0technological alternatives to GNSS.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">But for now<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">, said Withington,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">one of the &#8220;most expedient&#8221; options in war\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">is &#8220;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"No Spacing\">simply hunting down the jammer and destroying it.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Edited by: Zulfikar Abbany<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[analyse_source url=&#8221;https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/navigation-satellites-guide-the-world-and-its-wars\/a-76399668&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[analyse_image type=&#8221;featured&#8221; src=&#8221;&#8221;] https:\/\/p.dw.com\/p\/5AZ2i Global positioning satellites have become &#8216;quite vulnerable&#8217; the more we have come to rely on them in everyday life and warImage: picture alliance \/dpa If you have ever used a smartphone map or watched a delivery vehicle move across a tracking app, you have used GPS.
