data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t even know if I\u2019m really a photographer,\u201d Beverly Price confesses to me ahead of her latest exhibition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/centerforartandadvocacy.org\/exhibitions\/a-language-we-share-beverly-price-and-gordon-parks\"><em><span>A Language We Share: Beverly Price and Gordon Parks<\/span><\/em><\/a><span>. \u201cI think I\u2019m more of a channel.\u201d Whatever title Price chooses is almost immaterial, considering her intimate, striking portraits of life in her hometown of Washington DC speak for themselves. \u201cI really just want to capture a moment that I feel is sincere, and that has to speak to something real,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That desire is clear in Price\u2019s latest exhibition, which places her work in conversation with Gordon Parks, the legendary photographer and filmmaker who, beginning in the 1940s, became known for documenting Black American life. Price, who grew up on Capitol Hill, first discovered Parks in eighth grade, when she was tasked with writing a research paper on the late artist. \u201cI don\u2019t remember exactly what I was writing about, but I remember the photographs touching me,\u201d she says. The works of Parks, who moved to the capital city after landing photography positions in government offices, focused on highlighting the bigotry, segregation and struggle he witnessed in 1940s DC, which Price notes isn\u2019t so different from the present. \u201cI think he saw something in DC that I still see in DC today,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"0dc2fa5b-41b5-4b73-9712-b41600f52609\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1779\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442273.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.48\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A Language We Share: Beverly Price and Gordon Parks\" class=\"img\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442273.jpg\" width=\"1779\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Beverly Price<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The joint exhibition coincides with not only the 20th anniversary of Parks\u2019 passing, but also the 20-year mark of Price\u2019s returning home from incarceration in 2006. Price\u2019s photographs on display in <em>A Language We Share<\/em> were shot after her release and capture the city\u2019s young people in moments of both play and resistance. \u201cI feel like what drew me to youth is that I lost my innocence pretty young,\u201d says Price. \u201cI saw something in those kids that I wish someone had seen in me. I think that\u2019s why my work is deeply rooted in preventive justice \u2013 it\u2019s this element of showing the importance of children being allowed to be children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Centred on DC\u2019s Southeast Anacostia and Barry Farms neighbourhoods, Price\u2019s photographs capture the very same spaces Parks captured decades earlier. Though she didn\u2019t realise the geographical connection until later on, she was originally drawn to the areas for the community she found there, something that had become increasingly difficult to find in the rapidly gentrifying city. \u201cI didn\u2019t feel welcome in my old neighbourhood,\u201d Price says of Capitol Hill, which, in the years since her family sold her childhood home, has seen its Black population decrease dramatically. \u201cMoving to Anacostia later on, I was able to feel like I was back at home again because of all the Blackness in the community over here. One pairing in the exhibition brings Park\u2019s <\/span><em>Untitled, Chicago<\/em> (1957) side by side <span>with Price\u2019s <\/span><em><span>Air <\/span><\/em>(2018)<span>. In Park\u2019s photo, a young man is inside a jail cell, surrounded by cigarette smoke, with only his hands visible. In Price\u2019s photo, a young man wearing Nike sneakers is sitting outside, with the word \u201cAIR\u201d visible on his shoe and an ankle monitor attached to his leg. \u201cFor me, the pairing reflects both the experience of incarceration and the reality of returning home and living under systems like probation,\u201d says Price. \u201cIt shows how freedom and restriction can exist at the same time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That juxtaposition is evident throughout the entirety of the collection, where ease and unrest are shown side by side. Price\u2019s shots of children biking outside and playing in a marching band are contrasted by images of young people holding protest signs and streets crowded with demonstrators; it\u2019s a collection of work that shows her city\u2019s joy, but also its reality. Like her hero, and in a way, now collaborator, Parks, Price\u2019s concern is with human nature itself. href=\"https:\/\/centerforartandadvocacy.org\/exhibitions\/a-language-we-share-beverly-price-and-gordon-parks\"><em><span>A Language We Share: Beverly Price and Gordon Parks<\/span><\/em><\/a><span>. \u201cI think I\u2019m more of a channel.\u201d Whatever title Price chooses is almost immaterial, considering her intimate, striking portraits of life in her hometown of Washington DC speak for themselves. \u201cI really just want to capture a moment that I feel is sincere, and that has to speak to something real,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That desire is clear in Price\u2019s latest exhibition, which places her work in conversation with Gordon Parks, the legendary photographer and filmmaker who, beginning in the 1940s, became known for documenting Black American life. Price, who grew up on Capitol Hill, first discovered Parks in eighth grade, when she was tasked with writing a research paper on the late artist. \u201cI don\u2019t remember exactly what I was writing about, but I remember the photographs touching me,\u201d she says. The works of Parks, who moved to the capital city after landing photography positions in government offices, focused on highlighting the bigotry, segregation and struggle he witnessed in 1940s DC, which Price notes isn\u2019t so different from the present. \u201cI think he saw something in DC that I still see in DC today,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"0dc2fa5b-41b5-4b73-9712-b41600f52609\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1779\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442273.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.48\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A Language We Share: Beverly Price and Gordon Parks\" class=\"img\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442273.jpg\" width=\"1779\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Beverly Price<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The joint exhibition coincides with not only the 20th anniversary of Parks\u2019 passing, but also the 20-year mark of Price\u2019s returning home from incarceration in 2006. Price\u2019s photographs on display in <em>A Language We Share<\/em> were shot after her release and capture the city\u2019s young people in moments of both play and resistance. \u201cI feel like what drew me to youth is that I lost my innocence pretty young,\u201d says Price. \u201cI saw something in those kids that I wish someone had seen in me. I think that\u2019s why my work is deeply rooted in preventive justice \u2013 it\u2019s this element of showing the importance of children being allowed to be children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Centred on DC\u2019s Southeast Anacostia and Barry Farms neighbourhoods, Price\u2019s photographs capture the very same spaces Parks captured decades earlier. Though she didn\u2019t realise the geographical connection until later on, she was originally drawn to the areas for the community she found there, something that had become increasingly difficult to find in the rapidly gentrifying city. \u201cI didn\u2019t feel welcome in my old neighbourhood,\u201d Price says of Capitol Hill, which, in the years since her family sold her childhood home, has seen its Black population decrease dramatically. \u201cMoving to Anacostia later on, I was able to feel like I was back at home again because of all the Blackness in the community over here. One pairing in the exhibition brings Park\u2019s <\/span><em>Untitled, Chicago<\/em> (1957) side by side <span>with Price\u2019s <\/span><em><span>Air <\/span><\/em>(2018)<span>. In Park\u2019s photo, a young man is inside a jail cell, surrounded by cigarette smoke, with only his hands visible. In Price\u2019s photo, a young man wearing Nike sneakers is sitting outside, with the word \u201cAIR\u201d visible on his shoe and an ankle monitor attached to his leg. \u201cFor me, the pairing reflects both the experience of incarceration and the reality of returning home and living under systems like probation,\u201d says Price. \u201cIt shows how freedom and restriction can exist at the same time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That juxtaposition is evident throughout the entirety of the collection, where ease and unrest are shown side by side. Price\u2019s shots of children biking outside and playing in a marching band are contrasted by images of young people holding protest signs and streets crowded with demonstrators; it\u2019s a collection of work that shows her city\u2019s joy, but also its reality. Like her hero, and in a way, now collaborator, Parks, Price\u2019s concern is with human nature itself.
