We all feel the knock-on effects on gas and oil prices, our businesses and our societies, but it is of utmost importance that we come to a solution that is negotiated, and this puts an end to the hostilities that we see in the Middle East,&#8221;\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission chief condemned Iran&#8217;s &#8220;de-facto closure&#8221;\u00a0of the Strait of Hormuz. She did not directly mention the US or Israel in her appeal for an end to hostilities.<\/p>\n<p>Von der Leyen was speaking alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/australia-and-eu-strike-free-trade-deal\/a-76496671\">EU and Australia announced a new free trade deal.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not for the first time in recent years, the EU looks like something of a spectator to a war with major ripple effects for Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That might seem inevitable \u2014\u00a0but it wasn\u2019t always this way.
