Yet none of them handle a film set like Jan Komasa, a 41-year-old Polish filmmaker whose new thriller, <em>The Good Boy<\/em>, has Graham playing against type as a moralising kidnapper of wayward teens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s fucking mental!\u201d Graham tells me, in hysterics, pointing at Komasa. \u201cBut he\u2019s absolutely brilliant.\u201d The 52-year-old English actor demonstrates how he might prepare for a scene with a calming \u201cNamu My\u014dh\u014d Renge Ky\u014d\u201d mantra. \u201cAnd then he\u2019ll come in and be like\u2026\u201d Graham impersonates a machine gun. \u201cHe\u2019s this mad, beautiful scientist throwing chemicals everywhere. And then you get into it. I\u2019ve never experienced anything like it before in my life. Hopefully, I\u2019ll get the opportunity to work with Jan again. But it\u2019s absolutely barmy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m in a Covent Garden hotel with Graham, Komasa, and Kit Rakusen, a 15-year-old actor who plays Graham\u2019s son in <em>The Good Boy<\/em>. \u201cI can be really irritating and frustrating,\u201d says Komasa with a smile. \u201cI have to hear the music of the scene. I know what I want to shoot, but I forget it once we press play, because I see all the colours. I see the emotion. I\u2019m overwhelmed. It\u2019s probably my ADHD talking. And then I feel too much. That\u2019s why I usually work with long takes, and ask the actors to do the same thing, if needed, from a certain point, with a different type of emotion. Some actors like it. Some actors hate it. Some actors want to control everything \u2013 it\u2019s too contained, and they get pushed out of their comfort zone. It\u2019s more fun when you shake everything up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"p9edTXRfmX4\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p9edTXRfmX4\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><em>The Good Boy<\/em> \u2013 also known as <em>Heel<\/em> in America, where it was renamed due to a canine-related horror called <em>Good Boy<\/em> \u2013 is understandably a strange film requiring strange directing methods. In Yorkshire, 19-year-old Tommy (Anson Boon) heads out into clubs to snort coke, take pills, drink, tactically vomit, drink some more, and cheat on his girlfriend in the bathroom. In a substantially-worse-than-usual hangover, Tommy awakens chained up in the basement of an isolated house like a dog.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy\u2019s new owners and trainers are Chris (Graham) and Kathryn (Andrea Riseborough), a married couple determined to retrain their human pet for society by feeding him high art (classical music, the Ken Loach movie <em>Kes<\/em>) and forcing him to study TikTok videos of his past violent behaviour. Chris and Kathryn are, by this point, so calm and assured, it\u2019s apparent that Tommy isn\u2019t their first prisoner. They arguably have another one in their 12-year-old son, Jonathan (Rakusen), who\u2019s eerily calm, even in the presence of Tommy screaming and yanking at the shackles around his neck.<\/p>\n<p>Is Jonathan scared he\u2019ll be next? \u201cI don\u2019t think so,\u201d says Rakusen. \u201cHe <em>is<\/em> a good by. He\u2019s very sheltered. He thinks this is all normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s every parent\u2019s nightmare that, when they\u2019re 9 or 10, they\u2019ll go out on their own, and you can\u2019t be there,\u201d says Graham. \u201cAt some point, it has to happen. But for us, we\u2019ve wrapped him up in cotton wool. He\u2019s never had that experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Early in development, <em>The Good Boy<\/em> was a Polish-language thriller that followed a football hooligan in Warsaw. Whereas Tommy\u2019s clubbing antics are a five-minute montage in the finished, Yorkshire-set film, the Polish version would have had a completely different opening act. \u201cIn Poland, we have a higher tolerance for brutality in our cinema,\u201d says Komasa. \u201cTommy was horrible for 40 minutes, doing the most mental stuff and attacking people on the streets. It was unbearable, but I loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s a social commentary on certain things that are happening. But then it\u2019s dark and humorous in its own way<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>Komasa\u2019s credits include <em>Anniversary<\/em>, <em>Suicide Room<\/em>, and the Oscar-nominated <em>Corpus Cristi<\/em>. While <em>The Good Boy<\/em> was toned down for its English-language rewrite, Komasa still directs the sadistic antics and twists with a playful cruelty that\u2019s reminiscent of Jerzy Skolimowski, a producer on the project. \u201cPolish and British culture are close when it comes to dark humour,\u201d says Komasa. \u201cAll those films about football hooligans were a cult watch in Poland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was blown away by <em>Corpus Christi<\/em>,\u201d says Graham. \u201cI was looking forward to marrying that sensibility of British naturalism and socially relevant drama with that twist of European cinema. Jan\u2019s done it in a really unique way. It\u2019s a thriller. It\u2019s a social commentary on certain things that are happening. But then it\u2019s dark and humorous in its own way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Good Boy<\/em> can, as Graham attests, entertain popcorn audiences through its gritty yet absurd genre mash-ups: the tone, on paper, sounds like torture porn, yet it\u2019s often a moving comedy that depicts Tommy gradually accepting, perhaps even adoring, his captors. Further insights into Chris and Kathryn\u2019s marriage reveal deep grief, denial, and sexual frustration driving their motivations: everyone, not just Tommy, in this household is a prisoner to some extent.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Tommy and Chris share other chameleonic traits. Hellraiser Tommy is, secretly, middle-class. Conversely, working-class Chris wears a wig and attempts to hide his Scouse accent. Hearing my theory, Graham states that no one has made this observation yet from what he\u2019s heard or read. \u201cChris is from \u2013 and I mean no disrespect \u2013 Birkenhead, which is not Liverpool,\u201d says Graham. \u201cHe met his wife at university, joined the police force, and had aspirations to be part of her world \u2013 well-educated, a very affluent family. He felt out of place, but would do anything for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"b3f1a60e-5133-4cb6-ab9d-b41600d8c1b0\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442263.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Good Boy\" class=\"img\" height=\"1999\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442263.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">The Good Boy<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>Graham continues: \u201cTommy comes from a good home. But is it really a <em>good<\/em> home? His mum doesn\u2019t seem bothered when he\u2019s gone missing. His ma is more interested in yoga, and chatting to the fella. He\u2019s obviously come from a dysfunctional family. That\u2019s what we tried to marry with the two characters. They understand each other. But I just want to make him behave like a decent human being. My sense of what I want him to be a part of is kind of a good moral stance.\u201d The actor laughs. \u201cIt\u2019s just that my tactics are very, very screwed up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While <em>The Good Boy<\/em> is on the gnarlier side of cinema offerings, it\u2019s also inadvertently a four-quadrant movie due to the various character studies: young and old can identify with someone. \u201cThe film was initially about Tommy, but then it became about this one family unit,\u201d says Komasa. \u201cSomewhere out there in Yorkshire, in the moors, in solitude together \u2013 they love it. As crazy as it sounds, it\u2019s all about care in the end for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the interview ends, Graham asks Rakusen to offer his favourite memory of working with Komasa. \u201cThere was one scene where you gave the analogy of a bomb being under the table, and to play into it, like stepping onto eggshells,\u201d Rakusen tells the director. \u201cIt was always helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember that day,\u201d says Graham. \u201cMost directors would go\u2026\u201d Graham whispers instructions into Rakusen\u2019s ear. \u201cAnd then walk away. But Jan comes in and goes\u201d \u2013 Graham bellows at the top of his voice \u2013 \u201c\u2018OK. THERE\u2019S A BOMB UNDER THE TABLE. YOU CAN ALL HEAR THIS BANG. KID, THE BOMB\u2019S ABOUT TO GO OFF. OK, NOW GO!!!!\u2019\u201d And then he runs away, and you go, \u2018OK, shit. Let\u2019s go. Yet none of them handle a film set like Jan Komasa, a 41-year-old Polish filmmaker whose new thriller, <em>The Good Boy<\/em>, has Graham playing against type as a moralising kidnapper of wayward teens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s fucking mental!\u201d Graham tells me, in hysterics, pointing at Komasa. \u201cBut he\u2019s absolutely brilliant.\u201d The 52-year-old English actor demonstrates how he might prepare for a scene with a calming \u201cNamu My\u014dh\u014d Renge Ky\u014d\u201d mantra. \u201cAnd then he\u2019ll come in and be like\u2026\u201d Graham impersonates a machine gun. \u201cHe\u2019s this mad, beautiful scientist throwing chemicals everywhere. And then you get into it. I\u2019ve never experienced anything like it before in my life. Hopefully, I\u2019ll get the opportunity to work with Jan again. But it\u2019s absolutely barmy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m in a Covent Garden hotel with Graham, Komasa, and Kit Rakusen, a 15-year-old actor who plays Graham\u2019s son in <em>The Good Boy<\/em>. \u201cI can be really irritating and frustrating,\u201d says Komasa with a smile. \u201cI have to hear the music of the scene. I know what I want to shoot, but I forget it once we press play, because I see all the colours. I see the emotion. I\u2019m overwhelmed. It\u2019s probably my ADHD talking. And then I feel too much. That\u2019s why I usually work with long takes, and ask the actors to do the same thing, if needed, from a certain point, with a different type of emotion. Some actors like it. Some actors hate it. Some actors want to control everything \u2013 it\u2019s too contained, and they get pushed out of their comfort zone. It\u2019s more fun when you shake everything up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"p9edTXRfmX4\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p9edTXRfmX4\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><em>The Good Boy<\/em> \u2013 also known as <em>Heel<\/em> in America, where it was renamed due to a canine-related horror called <em>Good Boy<\/em> \u2013 is understandably a strange film requiring strange directing methods. In Yorkshire, 19-year-old Tommy (Anson Boon) heads out into clubs to snort coke, take pills, drink, tactically vomit, drink some more, and cheat on his girlfriend in the bathroom. In a substantially-worse-than-usual hangover, Tommy awakens chained up in the basement of an isolated house like a dog.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy\u2019s new owners and trainers are Chris (Graham) and Kathryn (Andrea Riseborough), a married couple determined to retrain their human pet for society by feeding him high art (classical music, the Ken Loach movie <em>Kes<\/em>) and forcing him to study TikTok videos of his past violent behaviour. Chris and Kathryn are, by this point, so calm and assured, it\u2019s apparent that Tommy isn\u2019t their first prisoner. They arguably have another one in their 12-year-old son, Jonathan (Rakusen), who\u2019s eerily calm, even in the presence of Tommy screaming and yanking at the shackles around his neck.<\/p>\n<p>Is Jonathan scared he\u2019ll be next? \u201cI don\u2019t think so,\u201d says Rakusen. \u201cHe <em>is<\/em> a good by. He\u2019s very sheltered. He thinks this is all normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s every parent\u2019s nightmare that, when they\u2019re 9 or 10, they\u2019ll go out on their own, and you can\u2019t be there,\u201d says Graham. \u201cAt some point, it has to happen. But for us, we\u2019ve wrapped him up in cotton wool. He\u2019s never had that experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Early in development, <em>The Good Boy<\/em> was a Polish-language thriller that followed a football hooligan in Warsaw. Whereas Tommy\u2019s clubbing antics are a five-minute montage in the finished, Yorkshire-set film, the Polish version would have had a completely different opening act. \u201cIn Poland, we have a higher tolerance for brutality in our cinema,\u201d says Komasa. \u201cTommy was horrible for 40 minutes, doing the most mental stuff and attacking people on the streets. It was unbearable, but I loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s a social commentary on certain things that are happening. But then it\u2019s dark and humorous in its own way<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>Komasa\u2019s credits include <em>Anniversary<\/em>, <em>Suicide Room<\/em>, and the Oscar-nominated <em>Corpus Cristi<\/em>. While <em>The Good Boy<\/em> was toned down for its English-language rewrite, Komasa still directs the sadistic antics and twists with a playful cruelty that\u2019s reminiscent of Jerzy Skolimowski, a producer on the project. \u201cPolish and British culture are close when it comes to dark humour,\u201d says Komasa. \u201cAll those films about football hooligans were a cult watch in Poland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was blown away by <em>Corpus Christi<\/em>,\u201d says Graham. \u201cI was looking forward to marrying that sensibility of British naturalism and socially relevant drama with that twist of European cinema. Jan\u2019s done it in a really unique way. It\u2019s a thriller. It\u2019s a social commentary on certain things that are happening. But then it\u2019s dark and humorous in its own way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Good Boy<\/em> can, as Graham attests, entertain popcorn audiences through its gritty yet absurd genre mash-ups: the tone, on paper, sounds like torture porn, yet it\u2019s often a moving comedy that depicts Tommy gradually accepting, perhaps even adoring, his captors. Further insights into Chris and Kathryn\u2019s marriage reveal deep grief, denial, and sexual frustration driving their motivations: everyone, not just Tommy, in this household is a prisoner to some extent.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Tommy and Chris share other chameleonic traits. Hellraiser Tommy is, secretly, middle-class. Conversely, working-class Chris wears a wig and attempts to hide his Scouse accent. Hearing my theory, Graham states that no one has made this observation yet from what he\u2019s heard or read. \u201cChris is from \u2013 and I mean no disrespect \u2013 Birkenhead, which is not Liverpool,\u201d says Graham. \u201cHe met his wife at university, joined the police force, and had aspirations to be part of her world \u2013 well-educated, a very affluent family. He felt out of place, but would do anything for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"b3f1a60e-5133-4cb6-ab9d-b41600d8c1b0\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442263.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Good Boy\" class=\"img\" height=\"1999\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442263.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">The Good Boy<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>Graham continues: \u201cTommy comes from a good home. But is it really a <em>good<\/em> home? His mum doesn\u2019t seem bothered when he\u2019s gone missing. His ma is more interested in yoga, and chatting to the fella. He\u2019s obviously come from a dysfunctional family. That\u2019s what we tried to marry with the two characters. They understand each other. But I just want to make him behave like a decent human being. My sense of what I want him to be a part of is kind of a good moral stance.\u201d The actor laughs. \u201cIt\u2019s just that my tactics are very, very screwed up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While <em>The Good Boy<\/em> is on the gnarlier side of cinema offerings, it\u2019s also inadvertently a four-quadrant movie due to the various character studies: young and old can identify with someone. \u201cThe film was initially about Tommy, but then it became about this one family unit,\u201d says Komasa. \u201cSomewhere out there in Yorkshire, in the moors, in solitude together \u2013 they love it. As crazy as it sounds, it\u2019s all about care in the end for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the interview ends, Graham asks Rakusen to offer his favourite memory of working with Komasa. \u201cThere was one scene where you gave the analogy of a bomb being under the table, and to play into it, like stepping onto eggshells,\u201d Rakusen tells the director. \u201cIt was always helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember that day,\u201d says Graham. \u201cMost directors would go\u2026\u201d Graham whispers instructions into Rakusen\u2019s ear. \u201cAnd then walk away. But Jan comes in and goes\u201d \u2013 Graham bellows at the top of his voice \u2013 \u201c\u2018OK. THERE\u2019S A BOMB UNDER THE TABLE. YOU CAN ALL HEAR THIS BANG. KID, THE BOMB\u2019S ABOUT TO GO OFF. OK, NOW GO!!!!\u2019\u201d And then he runs away, and you go, \u2018OK, shit. Let\u2019s go.
