href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/gallery\/28505\/11\/sanchez-kane\"><span>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane\u2019<\/span><\/a><span>s approach to creativity has always been holistic. Though she trained as a designer at Florence\u2019s prestigious Polimoda school, her work has always skated between the boundaries of fashion and art, refusing to be boxed in or categorised (the fact that the designer uses both \u2018he\u2019 and \u2018she\u2019 pronouns is likely connected to this). It\u2019s now 10 years since the Mexican designer graduated from Polimoda and founded his eponymous brand S\u00e1nchez-Kane, a label that, in the past, has explored the machismo embedded in Mexican culture, as well as the underexplored topic of female sexuality. These explorations were made via sculptural suits and Lucha Libre masks, but also objects and sculptures, which she coined as \u2018objetos absurdos\u2019. Back then, S\u00e1nchez-Kane presented her inspired collection in disparate settings \u2013 LA Fashion Week one month, and the Museo Experimental El Eco, a contemporary art gallery in Mexico City, the next. Today, that interdisciplinary approach remains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI never felt a strong separation between art and fashion,\u201d S\u00e1nchez-Kane tells me. \u201cIf you turn off the lights, what remains is a silhouette. A garment can behave like a sculpture, and a sculpture can feel like something worn.\u201d These musings are a product of S\u00e1nchez\u2019s latest work, an exhibition called <\/span><em><span>Coro de Soles Menores<\/span><\/em><span>, or \u2018Chorus of the Minor Suns\u2019 in English. The exhibit takes place at CHERUBY, a Shanghai arts and culture centre that \u201coperates at the intersection of art and fashion\u201d, and is also where S\u00e1nchez-Kane completed a two-month residency before <\/span><em><span>Soles Menores<\/span><\/em><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Inspired by a book on volcanoes by Clive Oppenheimer, the exhibition attempts to articulate \u201cthe desire to find new ways to \u2018descend into hell\u2019 and make sense of a \u2018better place\u2019, through our inner volcanoes: the minor suns.\u201d The phrase \u2018descend into hell\u2019 is itself taken from the <\/span><em><span>Apostles\u2019 Creed<\/span><\/em><span>, a Christian doctrine which taught that Christ descended to the underworld after death, to symbolise the passage of darkness through to rebirth. \u201cI\u2019m interested in tilting the body, literally and metaphorically, so it has to find new paths,\u201d S\u00e1nchez-Kane tells us. \u201cMaybe when the body changes its balance, other possibilities suddenly appear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the conversation below, we catch up with S\u00e1nchez-Kane about the ideas behind <\/span><em><span>Soles Menores<\/span><\/em><span>, the restrictions of the current fashion system, and the separation between fashion and art.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"98335287-dca8-42f3-abb6-b413010b4450\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442147.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"B&#225;rbara S&#225;nchez-Kane Coro de Soles Menores\" class=\"img\" height=\"2001\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/2\/1442147.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Coro de Perros<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of <span class=\"nowrap\">B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><strong>Hey B\u00e1rbara! Thanks so much for agreeing to speak with us. First of all, if you were to give us a brief explanation of <\/strong><strong><em>Coro de Soles Menores<\/em><\/strong><strong>, how would you describe it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> My work only really exists when it\u2019s shared. <\/span><em><span>Coro de Soles Menores<\/span><\/em><span> comes from my time at CHERUBY. It was my first residency program and the first time I\u2019ve truly worked outside my own studio. Eight years ago, before moving to Mexico City, I was afraid to leave my first studio \u2013 the place where S\u00e1nchez-Kane started \u2013 because I thought my creative process might dissolve if I stepped away from it. Now I think what we really need is to let life interrupt us. We cannot pretend to be isolated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What was the spark of inspiration that led to creating <\/strong><strong><em>Coro de Soles Menores<\/em><\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> It\u2019s a direct response to the residency. Specifically, I started reading a book on a flight to China by Clive Oppenheimer about volcanoes. How a single eruption can affect the entire planet, or how its consequences can be felt years later, even at the antipodes of where the eruption first occurred. I became interested in that idea of delayed collectivity. The invisible connections that keep resonating across time and distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Reading Fred Moten also helped shape the way I think about the project. \u2018Listening to noise\u00a0 means recognising that there is always a wild outside beyond the structures we inhabit \u2013 and that inhabit us.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you tell me the meaning behind the translucent blazer with the calla lilies inside?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> Reading Franco \u2018Bifo\u2019 Berardi helped me think about how we live surrounded by more information than we can possibly retain. After forgetting most of it, something remains, and sometimes that remainder becomes creativity. The exhibition comes from that condition: fragments, signals, and encounters that stay with you without fully explaining themselves. Sometimes it\u2019s enough to see through a garden.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cReading Helena Ch\u00e1vez Mac Gregor on Frida Kahlo made me think about how images carry historical tensions inside them\u201d \u2013 B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Another striking piece is the leather jacket with vases protruding from the shoulders \u2013 what was the idea behind this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> I\u2019m interested in tilting the body, literally and metaphorically, so it has to find new paths. Changing the balance forces the body to renegotiate how it moves and how it sees. Visiting a Chinese garden, I learned the idea of \u2018one step, one view.\u2019 Every shift in position reveals something different. Maybe when the body changes its balance, other possibilities suddenly appear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are also a number of crumpled shirts hanging from gold rails. Who are the faces on these shirts, and why did you want them there?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> They come from the Mexican 500 peso bill that went out of circulation in 2018 \u2013 Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. On the bill, Frida appears at a different scale than Diego. I expanded them so they occupy the same dimension. Reading Helena Ch\u00e1vez Mac Gregor on Frida Kahlo made me think about how images carry historical tensions inside them. I kept returning to Andr\u00e9 Breton\u2019s description of Frida\u2019s work as \u2018a ribbon around a bomb.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I was also struck by the near absence of physical money in China. Why do you prefer this particular method of showing your designs?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> Honestly, I didn\u2019t even know what to study at first. I started in engineering because numbers felt intuitive \u2013 easier than memorising texts. Don\u2019t ask me to do calculus now, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fashion became a way of thinking spatially and materially. It allowed me to understand the body as something that can be constructed, shifted, and reoriented. I never felt a strong separation between art and fashion. If you turn off the lights, what remains is a silhouette. It could be bronze, or it could be fabric \u2013 the body holds the same form in space. A garment can behave like a sculpture, and a sculpture can feel like something worn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there anything about the current fashion system that keeps you away from the traditional seasonal calendar?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> Being forced into a rigid calendar doesn\u2019t fit my curiosity or my rhythm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there any other mediums you\u2019d be keen to try?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> Works on paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there anything else you are working on next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> I\u2019ll be presenting <\/span><em><span>Aguas Frescas<\/span><\/em><span> at Performance Space New York to mark the 10-year anniversary of S\u00e1nchez-Kane. <\/span><em><span>Aguas Frescas<\/span><\/em><span> is an installation like a fountain of poetry, and is a collaboration between different artists, performers, and musicians. Though she trained as a designer at Florence\u2019s prestigious Polimoda school, her work has always skated between the boundaries of fashion and art, refusing to be boxed in or categorised (the fact that the designer uses both \u2018he\u2019 and \u2018she\u2019 pronouns is likely connected to this). It\u2019s now 10 years since the Mexican designer graduated from Polimoda and founded his eponymous brand S\u00e1nchez-Kane, a label that, in the past, has explored the machismo embedded in Mexican culture, as well as the underexplored topic of female sexuality. These explorations were made via sculptural suits and Lucha Libre masks, but also objects and sculptures, which she coined as \u2018objetos absurdos\u2019. Back then, S\u00e1nchez-Kane presented her inspired collection in disparate settings \u2013 LA Fashion Week one month, and the Museo Experimental El Eco, a contemporary art gallery in Mexico City, the next. Today, that interdisciplinary approach remains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI never felt a strong separation between art and fashion,\u201d S\u00e1nchez-Kane tells me. \u201cIf you turn off the lights, what remains is a silhouette. A garment can behave like a sculpture, and a sculpture can feel like something worn.\u201d These musings are a product of S\u00e1nchez\u2019s latest work, an exhibition called <\/span><em><span>Coro de Soles Menores<\/span><\/em><span>, or \u2018Chorus of the Minor Suns\u2019 in English. First of all, if you were to give us a brief explanation of <\/strong><strong><em>Coro de Soles Menores<\/em><\/strong><strong>, how would you describe it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> My work only really exists when it\u2019s shared. <\/span><em><span>Coro de Soles Menores<\/span><\/em><span> comes from my time at CHERUBY. It was my first residency program and the first time I\u2019ve truly worked outside my own studio. Eight years ago, before moving to Mexico City, I was afraid to leave my first studio \u2013 the place where S\u00e1nchez-Kane started \u2013 because I thought my creative process might dissolve if I stepped away from it. Now I think what we really need is to let life interrupt us. We cannot pretend to be isolated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What was the spark of inspiration that led to creating <\/strong><strong><em>Coro de Soles Menores<\/em><\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> It\u2019s a direct response to the residency. Specifically, I started reading a book on a flight to China by Clive Oppenheimer about volcanoes. How a single eruption can affect the entire planet, or how its consequences can be felt years later, even at the antipodes of where the eruption first occurred. I became interested in that idea of delayed collectivity. The invisible connections that keep resonating across time and distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Reading Fred Moten also helped shape the way I think about the project. \u2018Listening to noise\u00a0 means recognising that there is always a wild outside beyond the structures we inhabit \u2013 and that inhabit us.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you tell me the meaning behind the translucent blazer with the calla lilies inside?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> Reading Franco \u2018Bifo\u2019 Berardi helped me think about how we live surrounded by more information than we can possibly retain. After forgetting most of it, something remains, and sometimes that remainder becomes creativity. The exhibition comes from that condition: fragments, signals, and encounters that stay with you without fully explaining themselves. Sometimes it\u2019s enough to see through a garden.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cReading Helena Ch\u00e1vez Mac Gregor on Frida Kahlo made me think about how images carry historical tensions inside them\u201d \u2013 B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Another striking piece is the leather jacket with vases protruding from the shoulders \u2013 what was the idea behind this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> I\u2019m interested in tilting the body, literally and metaphorically, so it has to find new paths. Changing the balance forces the body to renegotiate how it moves and how it sees. Visiting a Chinese garden, I learned the idea of \u2018one step, one view.\u2019 Every shift in position reveals something different. Maybe when the body changes its balance, other possibilities suddenly appear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are also a number of crumpled shirts hanging from gold rails. Who are the faces on these shirts, and why did you want them there?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> They come from the Mexican 500 peso bill that went out of circulation in 2018 \u2013 Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. On the bill, Frida appears at a different scale than Diego. I expanded them so they occupy the same dimension. Reading Helena Ch\u00e1vez Mac Gregor on Frida Kahlo made me think about how images carry historical tensions inside them. I kept returning to Andr\u00e9 Breton\u2019s description of Frida\u2019s work as \u2018a ribbon around a bomb.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I was also struck by the near absence of physical money in China. Why do you prefer this particular method of showing your designs?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e1rbara S\u00e1nchez-Kane:<\/strong><span> Honestly, I didn\u2019t even know what to study at first. I started in engineering because numbers felt intuitive \u2013 easier than memorising texts. Don\u2019t ask me to do calculus now, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fashion became a way of thinking spatially and materially. It allowed me to understand the body as something that can be constructed, shifted, and reoriented. I never felt a strong separation between art and fashion. If you turn off the lights, what remains is a silhouette. It could be bronze, or it could be fabric \u2013 the body holds the same form in space.
