Conditions report from Wednesday, March 18, 2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Dumping at sea level.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meaning it\u2019s dumping even more at elevation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Taxi to Eaglecrest from the cute, historic gold mining-era state capital of Juneau.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We wanted to fly in a helicopter but there\u2019s a storm dumping good powder snow that makes that impossible for the time being.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

So we opted for the next best thing.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eaglecrest!<\/strong><\/p>\n

When we pulled up to the parking lot it was 9 a.m. and barely full.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

At a bigger, more destination ski area like those on mega passes found in the Lower 48, you\u2019d question if the mountain was even open, with the amount of cars in the lot.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But this is just a powder day at Eaglecrest, which is having an exceptionally snowy March this year.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We hopped the Ptarmigan chair, no liftline, and got to down to business.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The independent Eaglecrest has a 1,620-foot vertical drop and every single one of those feet was skiing fresh and good in about 8-12\u2033 of untouched powder.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The resort is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays so Powder Wednesdays are a real thing here.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We reaped the harvest of the past couple days of snowfall, big time.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was smooth, fast, high-density coastal powder\u2014the stuff dreams are made of.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was spongey, great cliff hucking snow.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The locals were having a ball.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Friendly Alaskans with big smiles and powder mustaches.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We met a couple heli guides from Haines who came to wait out the storm hitting Southeast Alaska right now in the best way they knew how:<\/strong><\/p>\n

By skiing it.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

They were nice and fun to ski with, taking us around to some of the mountains best stashes.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Truthfully, Eaglecrest itself feels like a giant stash spot of the entire North American ski industry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A place you don\u2019t often hear of and is often overlooked, but that has as good of skiing and snow conditions as any big ski resort player.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The resort has roughly 640 acres of skiable terrain and some absolutely epic sidecontry for the experienced ski tourer.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was thoroughly impressed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAlaska\u2019s best kept secret\u201d is only 15 minutes from Downtown Juneau on Douglas Island and is owned by the city.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a wholesome, family-oriented, good skiing\/hard-charging powder-inclined mountain on the coast of one of the wildest places left in the world\u2014good ol\u2019 Alaska.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fixed grip chairs take you up to coastal \u00a0mountain views above western hemlock and spruce tree forests that are certainly something to write home about.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alaska might be known for its steep helicopter-accessed descents and a mythical spine zones, sure.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But it\u2019s the little ski areas like Eaglecrest that are the beating hearts of the ski industry here.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

And this one packs a hell of a punch.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
