href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/category\/weather\/\">weather<\/a> for the past year is nearly done.<\/strong> La Ni\u00f1a is weakening quickly, and by summer, its warm-water counterpart El Ni\u00f1o could take over.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOAA\u2019s Climate Prediction Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso_advisory\/ensodisc.shtml\">issued a dual ENSO Alert<\/a> on March 12: a La Ni\u00f1a Advisory and an El Ni\u00f1o Watch simultaneously.<\/strong> A shift to ENSO-neutral conditions is expected within the next month, with neutral likely to hold through May-July 2026. After that, El Ni\u00f1o carries a 62% chance of developing by June-August and is expected to persist through at least the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/2023-24-el-nino-outlook-what-are-the-implications-for-north-american-ski-season\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">El Ni\u00f1o Outlook: What Are the Implications for North American Ski Season?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>La Ni\u00f1a continued through February, with the key Ni\u00f1o-3.4 sea surface temperature index sitting at -0.5\u00b0C, just barely in La Ni\u00f1a territory.<\/strong> Anything below -0.5\u00b0C and we\u2019re in La Ni\u00f1a. Above +0.5\u00b0C and it\u2019s El Ni\u00f1o. Right now, we\u2019re nearly back to the middle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Subsurface ocean temperatures across the Pacific have been rising steadily, a large reservoir of warm water building at depth that could fuel El Ni\u00f1o development later this year.<\/strong> That subsurface heat is one of the main reasons forecasters are taking the El Ni\u00f1o threat seriously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atmospheric conditions still reflect La Ni\u00f1a.<\/strong> Trade winds remain stronger than normal over the east-central Pacific, convection is suppressed near the Date Line, and the Southern Oscillation Index is positive. But that atmospheric signal is fading.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Strong Could El Ni\u00f1o Get?<\/strong> That\u2019s the big question, and right now nobody has a firm answer. There is roughly a one-in-three chance El Ni\u00f1o reaches \u201cstrong\u201d status by October-December 2026, defined as a Ni\u00f1o-3.4 temperature anomaly of +1.5\u00b0C or higher.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bookmark: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/category\/weather\/\">SnowBrains Snow Forecasts<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s also worth noting that spring is historically the trickiest time to forecast ENSO.<\/strong> Model forecasts issued during the Northern Hemisphere spring tend to be less accurate than those made at other times of the year, a well-known limitation called the spring predictability barrier. Even so, the combination of deep ocean heat and weakening trade winds gives forecasters growing confidence in El Ni\u00f1o development this summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A developing El Ni\u00f1o would shift global rainfall patterns, alter jet stream behavior, and change the odds for drought and flooding across multiple continents.<\/strong> For skiers in the western U.S., the implications for the 2026-27 winter are significant.
