SXSW, which turned 40 this year, featured fewer bands in 2026 and skipped its usual dedicated music weekend, but it still delivered an impressive lineup of both emerging artists and movies. That said, it\u2019s far from being another stuffy film festival: the weather was hot, the cowboy hats were on, the crowds were vibrant, the locals were excited, and the movie-goers were vocal. That\u2019s Texas, baby!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The film premieres this year, in particular, didn\u2019t disappoint. From an American crime comedy featuring Keke Palmer about a crew of shoplifters, to a (timely) film about enraged ballerinas, there were plenty of moments to talk about on the way home from Austin, cowboy boots packed in carry-on. Here are the ones we can\u2019t stop thinking about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><em>OVER YOUR DEAD BODY<\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"pGxKTIegUZ4\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pGxKTIegUZ4\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>People are calling Jorma Taccone\u2019s <em>Over Your Dead Body <\/em>a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/reviews\/over-your-dead-body-samara-weaving-jason-segel-1236687849\/\">quintessential SXSW movie<\/a>\u201d because it hits a certain ironically humorous tone, while being all about murder and mayhem. In the film, a dysfunctional married couple, played by Samara Weaving and Jason Segel, head to a cabin to repair their relationship, while secretly plotting to murder the other. While I\u2019m moderately concerned about the growing number of murderous couples movies, this one was a fun watch. What it may say about the state of love today, however, is a different story. The film\u2019s US release date is set for April 24.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><em>DREAMQUIL<\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"af760eda-8fc7-493d-8a9c-b41100a059a1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1296\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441805.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.78\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"FNL_DREAMQUIL_FILMSTILL_PRESS_2-H-2026\" class=\"img\" height=\"730\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441805.jpeg\" width=\"1296\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Dreamquil<\/span><span class=\"credit\">(Film Still)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/alex-prager\">Alex Prager<\/a>\u2019s first feature film, <em>Dreamquil<\/em>, is set in the not-so-distant future, when poor air quality leads to people living mostly virtual lives. The premise is dystopian but, unfortunately, close to home, and the best part about this psychological thriller is how it explores the illusion of wellness \u201csaving\u201d us in the face of increasing isolation. In it, Carol, played by Elizabeth Banks, embarks on an avant-garde digital wellness retreat with the hopes of getting her life back on track. Directed by Luchina Fisher and inspired by the Emmy Award-winning short documentary of the same name, <\/span><em><span>The Dads <\/span><\/em><span>follows the fathers of trans and non-binary children over the course of a year, spanning retreats in rural Maine and Minnesota, protests, family milestones, a pivotal US Supreme Court decision and the collapse of gender-affirming care for youth. It\u2019s a timely and poignant journey through the impact the Trump administration is having on trans people and their families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><em>I LOVE BOOSTERS<\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"rnfTmSAnS3c\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rnfTmSAnS3c\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/film-tv\/article\/42330\/1\/boots-riley-sorry-to-bother-you-interview\">Boots Riley<\/a> is back, and his new film, <\/span><em><span>I Love Boosters, <\/span><\/em><span>was the talk of this year\u2019s festival, which is unsurprising to anyone who has watched this movie. In the American crime comedy, Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie and Taylour Paige play a band of working-class Bay Area shoplifters taking down a fashion tyrant, Demi Moore. The result is a sci-fi satire film that blends racial and social inequity with corporate exploitation and conspiracy theories. Following his politically charged <\/span><em><span>Sorry to Bother You<\/span><\/em><span>, Riley has a knack for aburdist political commentary. <\/span><em><span>I Love Boosters <\/span><\/em><span>is a truly unique approach to the anti-capitalist genre for those who dream of stealing back their rights. Thankfully, you also <\/span>don\u2019t <span>have to wait long to watch it. There aren\u2019t many movies made about growing up on the other side of the world, but with <\/span><em><span>Big Girls Don\u2019t Cry<\/span><\/em><span>, Paloma Schneideman captured both the beauty and perils of being a teenage girl navigating sexual curiosity, the dynamics of girl groups and New Zealand\u2019s own brand of misogynistic culture with sometimes harrowing accuracy. If you liked <\/span><em><span>How to Have Sex<\/span><\/em><span> or <\/span><em><span>D\u00ecdi<\/span><\/em><span>, chances are you\u2019ll be moved by <\/span><em><span>Big Girls Don\u2019t Cry<\/span><\/em><span>. 14-year-old Sid, played effortlessly by Ani Palmer, captures something undeniably raw and real over the course of one rural summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><em>CHILI FINGER<\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"1c7f2abf-cb4c-49e2-a262-b41100a1f815\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/950\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441808.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"chili-finger-355013\" class=\"img\" height=\"633\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441808.jpeg\" width=\"950\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Chili Finger<\/span><span class=\"credit\">(Film Still)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Fair warning: this film is to be avoided if you have any weird feelings around fingers. <\/span><em><span>Chili Finger <\/span><\/em><span>is a twisted family movie, <\/span><span>following what happens when a mother, whose daughter had just moved away from college, \u201cfinds\u201d a finger in her chilli at a fast-food restaurant. Directed by Edd Benda and Stephen Helstad, the black comedy is an obscure exploration of the chaos of small-town America and the potential of using blackmail to escape the mundane.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><em>PRETTY LETHAL<\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"mh-pwSLm1kE\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mh-pwSLm1kE\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>There\u2019s been a lot of talk about ballerinas as of late, ever since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/film-tv\/article\/69864\/1\/everyone-needs-to-leave-timothee-chalamet-alone-opera-ballet-cinema\"><span>Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet said \u201cnobody cares\u201d about ballet and opera<\/span><\/a><span>. As it turns out, people <\/span><em><span>do<\/span><\/em><span> care about ballerinas, especially when they are played by Uma Thurman, Lana Condor, Maddie Ziegler, Avantika, Millicent Simmonds and Iris Apatow, who are stranded in a forest, turning their ballet skills and pointe shoes into tools of survival. SXSW, which turned 40 this year, featured fewer bands in 2026 and skipped its usual dedicated music weekend, but it still delivered an impressive lineup of both emerging artists and movies. That said, it\u2019s far from being another stuffy film festival: the weather was hot, the cowboy hats were on, the crowds were vibrant, the locals were excited, and the movie-goers were vocal. That\u2019s Texas, baby!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The film premieres this year, in particular, didn\u2019t disappoint. From an American crime comedy featuring Keke Palmer about a crew of shoplifters, to a (timely) film about enraged ballerinas, there were plenty of moments to talk about on the way home from Austin, cowboy boots packed in carry-on. Here are the ones we can\u2019t stop thinking about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><em>OVER YOUR DEAD BODY<\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"pGxKTIegUZ4\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pGxKTIegUZ4\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>People are calling Jorma Taccone\u2019s <em>Over Your Dead Body <\/em>a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/reviews\/over-your-dead-body-samara-weaving-jason-segel-1236687849\/\">quintessential SXSW movie<\/a>\u201d because it hits a certain ironically humorous tone, while being all about murder and mayhem. In the film, a dysfunctional married couple, played by Samara Weaving and Jason Segel, head to a cabin to repair their relationship, while secretly plotting to murder the other. While I\u2019m moderately concerned about the growing number of murderous couples movies, this one was a fun watch. What it may say about the state of love today, however, is a different story. The premise is dystopian but, unfortunately, close to home, and the best part about this psychological thriller is how it explores the illusion of wellness \u201csaving\u201d us in the face of increasing isolation. In it, Carol, played by Elizabeth Banks, embarks on an avant-garde digital wellness retreat with the hopes of getting her life back on track. Directed by Luchina Fisher and inspired by the Emmy Award-winning short documentary of the same name, <\/span><em><span>The Dads <\/span><\/em><span>follows the fathers of trans and non-binary children over the course of a year, spanning retreats in rural Maine and Minnesota, protests, family milestones, a pivotal US Supreme Court decision and the collapse of gender-affirming care for youth. It\u2019s a timely and poignant journey through the impact the Trump administration is having on trans people and their families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><em>I LOVE BOOSTERS<\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"rnfTmSAnS3c\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rnfTmSAnS3c\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/film-tv\/article\/42330\/1\/boots-riley-sorry-to-bother-you-interview\">Boots Riley<\/a> is back, and his new film, <\/span><em><span>I Love Boosters, <\/span><\/em><span>was the talk of this year\u2019s festival, which is unsurprising to anyone who has watched this movie. In the American crime comedy, Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie and Taylour Paige play a band of working-class Bay Area shoplifters taking down a fashion tyrant, Demi Moore. The result is a sci-fi satire film that blends racial and social inequity with corporate exploitation and conspiracy theories. Following his politically charged <\/span><em><span>Sorry to Bother You<\/span><\/em><span>, Riley has a knack for aburdist political commentary. <\/span><em><span>I Love Boosters <\/span><\/em><span>is a truly unique approach to the anti-capitalist genre for those who dream of stealing back their rights. Thankfully, you also <\/span>don\u2019t <span>have to wait long to watch it. There aren\u2019t many movies made about growing up on the other side of the world, but with <\/span><em><span>Big Girls Don\u2019t Cry<\/span><\/em><span>, Paloma Schneideman captured both the beauty and perils of being a teenage girl navigating sexual curiosity, the dynamics of girl groups and New Zealand\u2019s own brand of misogynistic culture with sometimes harrowing accuracy. Directed by Edd Benda and Stephen Helstad, the black comedy is an obscure exploration of the chaos of small-town America and the potential of using blackmail to escape the mundane.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><em>PRETTY LETHAL<\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"mh-pwSLm1kE\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mh-pwSLm1kE\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>There\u2019s been a lot of talk about ballerinas as of late, ever since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/film-tv\/article\/69864\/1\/everyone-needs-to-leave-timothee-chalamet-alone-opera-ballet-cinema\"><span>Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet said \u201cnobody cares\u201d about ballet and opera<\/span><\/a><span>. As it turns out, people <\/span><em><span>do<\/span><\/em><span> care about ballerinas, especially when they are played by Uma Thurman, Lana Condor, Maddie Ziegler, Avantika, Millicent Simmonds and Iris Apatow, who are stranded in a forest, turning their ballet skills and pointe shoes into tools of survival.
