Tadej must drop him, because after 300 kilometres on Via Roma, if they were still together&#8230; the favourite would be Mathieu. The long distance could be a friend to the Dutchman.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Poga\u010dar is often compared to the Cannibal for returning cycling to an era of dominant solo performances unseen since the likes of Merckx and Fausto Coppi.<\/p>\n<p>But while not wanting to spend too much time on the subject, the Belgian does see shared characteristics in himself and the Slovenian, especially in his career before his infamous crash at the Blois outdoor v\u00e9lodrome in September 1969, which left him with back and hip issues for life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, I don&#8217;t see many differences. There were days when I won by a wide margin, like the 1969 Li\u00e8ge stage or the Tre Cime di Lavaredo stage of the 1968 Giro,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;I see the same determination in Tadej. But let&#8217;s stop there, because as you know, I don&#8217;t like comparisons, especially when comparing different eras.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Poga\u010dar is trying to do what Merckx achieved when he was just 21: win Milan-San Remo for the first time. It&#8217;s an achievement which he still places above the seventh title he won on the Ligurian coast, as it kick-started his love affair with racing in Italy and winning all of cycling&#8217;s biggest one-day races.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fair to say now that his modern counterpart probably won&#8217;t match the feat of seven San Remo titles. Tadej must drop him, because after 300 kilometres on Via Roma, if they were still together&#8230; the favourite would be Mathieu. The long distance could be a friend to the Dutchman.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Poga\u010dar is often compared to the Cannibal for returning cycling to an era of dominant solo performances unseen since the likes of Merckx and Fausto Coppi.<\/p>\n<p>But while not wanting to spend too much time on the subject, the Belgian does see shared characteristics in himself and the Slovenian, especially in his career before his infamous crash at the Blois outdoor v\u00e9lodrome in September 1969, which left him with back and hip issues for life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, I don&#8217;t see many differences. There were days when I won by a wide margin, like the 1969 Li\u00e8ge stage or the Tre Cime di Lavaredo stage of the 1968 Giro,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;I see the same determination in Tadej. But let&#8217;s stop there, because as you know, I don&#8217;t like comparisons, especially when comparing different eras.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Poga\u010dar is trying to do what Merckx achieved when he was just 21: win Milan-San Remo for the first time. It&#8217;s an achievement which he still places above the seventh title he won on the Ligurian coast, as it kick-started his love affair with racing in Italy and winning all of cycling&#8217;s biggest one-day races.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fair to say now that his modern counterpart probably won&#8217;t match the feat of seven San Remo titles. The long distance could be a friend to the Dutchman.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Poga\u010dar is often compared to the Cannibal for returning cycling to an era of dominant solo performances unseen since the likes of Merckx and Fausto Coppi.<\/p>\n<p>But while not wanting to spend too much time on the subject, the Belgian does see shared characteristics in himself and the Slovenian, especially in his career before his infamous crash at the Blois outdoor v\u00e9lodrome in September 1969, which left him with back and hip issues for life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, I don&#8217;t see many differences. There were days when I won by a wide margin, like the 1969 Li\u00e8ge stage or the Tre Cime di Lavaredo stage of the 1968 Giro,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;I see the same determination in Tadej. But let&#8217;s stop there, because as you know, I don&#8217;t like comparisons, especially when comparing different eras.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Poga\u010dar is trying to do what Merckx achieved when he was just 21: win Milan-San Remo for the first time. It&#8217;s an achievement which he still places above the seventh title he won on the Ligurian coast, as it kick-started his love affair with racing in Italy and winning all of cycling&#8217;s biggest one-day races.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fair to say now that his modern counterpart probably won&#8217;t match the feat of seven San Remo titles.
