Francis&#8217; Vatican claimed that some of the losses dipped into resources intended for charity.<\/p>\n<p>It also exposed infighting and intrigue high in the Church&#8217;s hierarchy and revealed other scandals like <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/pope-francis-authorized-1-million-to-free-kidnapped-nun-says-accused-cardinal\/a-61701281\">papal\u00a0ransom payments to Islamist militants<\/a> and espionage activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vjs-no-js\">To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that <a href=\"https:\/\/videojs.com\/html5-video-support\/\" target=\"_blank\">supports HTML5 video<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Giovanni Angelo Becciu, 77, was second in command at the Vatican&#8217;s administrative and diplomatic department, the Secretariat of State, at the time the deal went through in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>He was once seen as a frontrunner to be a future pope.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Born in Sardinia, he became an archbishop in 2001 and was appointed as a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2018, barely two years before he would ask for Becciu&#8217;s resignation as a Prefect and the renunciation of his privileges as a cardinal amid the fraud allegations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Current <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/pope-leo-xiv\/t-72486328\">Pope Leo XIV<\/a>, who is a canon lawyer, met with judges and prosecutors who oversee the Vatican legal apparatus as recently as Saturday to open the new judicial year.
