It turns out you can\u2019t Brat your way to Best Actor glory with canny marketing, carefully staged viral moments and the elusive quality of \u201cwhite boy swag\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many Timoth\u00e9e fans aren\u2019t just mourning last night\u2019s defeat, but something much more painful: the actor they so admired, slowly morphing into someone they find annoying. People on TikTok are sharing eulogies which read, \u201cRIP Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, you would have hated Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u201d and wondering, \u201cWhere did my beautiful boy go?\u201d But are these people grieving a fantasy, or has he really changed?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s hard to know exactly when the popular perception of Chalamet began to change, at least among some quarters (let\u2019s not overstate the case here: he remains a hugely popular actor.) When he began stepping out with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/kylie-jenner\">Kylie Jenner<\/a>, there were murmurs of discontent, some fans seemingly displeased that someone they considered an arthouse darling would associate with someone so mainstream. This was the beginning of his transition in the public imagination from gentle soft-boy to arrogant jock, from a man who reads Kerouac to a man who reads <\/span><em><span>Atomic Habits,<\/span><\/em><span> from a man who titters at Noah Bumbauch films to a man who guffaws at fart jokes and <\/span><em><span>Borat 2<\/span><\/em><span>, from your dream boyfriend to your actual boyfriend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7614173435673070870\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>But it wasn\u2019t until the <\/span><em><span>Mary Supreme<\/span><\/em><span> press tour that things really shifted: at a certain point, Chalamet\u2019s relentless bravado and undisguised ambition stopped being charming and started to appear, to some, a little graceless. While our culture worships success, we expect those who achieve it to at least perform being modest and humble; when someone refuses to play into that game and backs themselves fully, it can read as a little obnoxious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There also emerged the criticism that he was using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/timothee-chalamet-wigga-marty-supreme-oscars.html\"><span>Black culture<\/span><\/a><span> to advance his campaign, only to discard it once it was no longer convenient: this was mostly at the level of fashion, but arguably applies to his collaboration with Esdeekid (hip hop being a Black art form, regardless of the Scouse rapper\u2019s own identity.) Finally, there were the dismissive comments about opera and ballet, which saw him dragged by everyone from Whoopie Goldberg to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/doja-cat\">Doja Cat<\/a> (although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/film-tv\/article\/69864\/1\/everyone-needs-to-leave-timothee-chalamet-alone-opera-ballet-cinema\">defended in Dazed<\/a>). For many fans, it all became too much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tio, once such a fan of Timmy, describes herself as \u201cdeeply disappointed\u201d by his recent trajectory. \u201cHe seemed to have such a deep love and appreciation for [acting],\u201d she says, \u201cbut now it feels like something he wants to conquer and dominate, which makes me very angry. Maybe it\u2019s because he\u2019s playing more masculine roles, but it feels like a domination thing now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7614340821847936276\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Another former fan of Chalamet, Zara, has downgraded herself to the more neutral status of Timmy observer. \u201cPeople [at first] saw him as old money, European and elegant, but he has become American. Arrogant, greedy, dating the symbol of American excess: the Kardashians-Jenners.\u201d Zara doesn\u2019t actually think this backlash is fair, though. \u201cLowkey, he\u2019s been woman\u2019d,\u201d she adds. \u201cHe has a bit of arrogance and pride, and suddenly he\u2019s Satan.\u201d<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s Chalamet\u2019s failure to be humble, or at least to adequately perform humility, that seems to be alienating people the most. However, a<\/span><span>ccording to fan Lindsay, Timothee hasn\u2019t actually changed: we\u2019re just finally seeing what he really likes. \u201cI think he\u2019s been putting on an act for years because his appearance allowed him to slip into the soy boy crowd, and he knew that was what was going to make him money and get him the roles and attention,\u201d she suggests, adding that, now he\u2019s with Kylie Jenner and achieved the wild success he was aiming for, he no longer has to pretend. \u201cPeople have been ignoring lil Timmy Tim for too long, because they liked this cute boy image of him, but he is and always has been lil Timmy Tim,\u201d she says, referring to his infamous high school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iSm-9v34VmU\">rap alter-ego<\/a>. Maybe people have been projecting onto Timothee all this time, mistaking someone they don\u2019t know for the tortured, sensitive roles he inhabited in early films like <\/span><em><span>Call Me By Your Name<\/span><\/em><span> and <\/span><em><span>Beautiful Boy<\/span><\/em><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cLowkey, he\u2019s been woman\u2019d. He has a bit of arrogance and pride, and suddenly he\u2019s Satan\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Not everyone in the fandom is souring on Timmy in the same way, though. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/user\/IanaMurray\">Iana Murray<\/a>, a journalist and OG stan, understands where people are coming from and acknowledges that he <\/span><em><span>has<\/span><\/em><span> changed. But, she adds, \u201cI think people are holding onto a projection of this delicate French boy that was a product of the roles that made him famous. In his very first Jimmy Fallon appearance, he\u2019s practically vibrating in his seat from nervousness, and of course, that\u2019s really endearing, but I think it\u2019s naive to assume he\u2019s going to be just as overexcited eight years later when he\u2019s well settled into his celebrity.\u201d Rather than being driven by egotism alone, she suggests that Chalemet\u2019s heavy self-promotion is ultimately in service of a larger goal. \u201cI think he earnestly believes that he has this responsibility to ensure cinema and cinema-going survives, which is probably bolstered by the narrative that\u2019s circled him for years: that he\u2019s one of the very last movie stars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s no doubt an element of projection at play in people being upset to discover that a celebrity they don\u2019t know is, seemingly, a different person than how they\u2019d imagined. But when Chalemet is doing media appearances with Theo Von (a podcaster who is at the very least right-wing-coded) and reportedly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/timothee-chalamet-december-cover-2025-interview\"><span>telling<\/span><\/a><span><em> Vogue<\/em> that \u201cprocreation is the reason we\u2019re here\u201d, there are reasonable grounds to suspect that he\u2019s taken a more douchey turn. On the other hand, it\u2019s refreshing to see someone be so honest about their desire for greatness \u2013 better that than the faux-humility that we\u2019ve become to demand of our celebrities, which can be every bit as preening and self-flattering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A lot can be birthed through \u201cfailure\u201d, which many people view his Oscar loss to be. There is a rawness to it \u2013 a humanness. It\u2019s all very <\/span><em><span>Marty Supreme<\/span><\/em><span>. And as cultural critic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/user\/patricksproull\">Patrick Sproull<\/a> argues, Chalamet is increasingly becoming a performance artist. \u201cIt is so exciting to watch him perform as a celebrity,\u201d they tell Dazed. \u201cEverything he wears is a costume\u201d. It turns out you can\u2019t Brat your way to Best Actor glory with canny marketing, carefully staged viral moments and the elusive quality of \u201cwhite boy swag\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many Timoth\u00e9e fans aren\u2019t just mourning last night\u2019s defeat, but something much more painful: the actor they so admired, slowly morphing into someone they find annoying. People on TikTok are sharing eulogies which read, \u201cRIP Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, you would have hated Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u201d and wondering, \u201cWhere did my beautiful boy go?\u201d But are these people grieving a fantasy, or has he really changed?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s hard to know exactly when the popular perception of Chalamet began to change, at least among some quarters (let\u2019s not overstate the case here: he remains a hugely popular actor.) When he began stepping out with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/kylie-jenner\">Kylie Jenner<\/a>, there were murmurs of discontent, some fans seemingly displeased that someone they considered an arthouse darling would associate with someone so mainstream. This was the beginning of his transition in the public imagination from gentle soft-boy to arrogant jock, from a man who reads Kerouac to a man who reads <\/span><em><span>Atomic Habits,<\/span><\/em><span> from a man who titters at Noah Bumbauch films to a man who guffaws at fart jokes and <\/span><em><span>Borat 2<\/span><\/em><span>, from your dream boyfriend to your actual boyfriend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7614173435673070870\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>But it wasn\u2019t until the <\/span><em><span>Mary Supreme<\/span><\/em><span> press tour that things really shifted: at a certain point, Chalamet\u2019s relentless bravado and undisguised ambition stopped being charming and started to appear, to some, a little graceless. While our culture worships success, we expect those who achieve it to at least perform being modest and humble; when someone refuses to play into that game and backs themselves fully, it can read as a little obnoxious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There also emerged the criticism that he was using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/timothee-chalamet-wigga-marty-supreme-oscars.html\"><span>Black culture<\/span><\/a><span> to advance his campaign, only to discard it once it was no longer convenient: this was mostly at the level of fashion, but arguably applies to his collaboration with Esdeekid (hip hop being a Black art form, regardless of the Scouse rapper\u2019s own identity.) Finally, there were the dismissive comments about opera and ballet, which saw him dragged by everyone from Whoopie Goldberg to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/doja-cat\">Doja Cat<\/a> (although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/film-tv\/article\/69864\/1\/everyone-needs-to-leave-timothee-chalamet-alone-opera-ballet-cinema\">defended in Dazed<\/a>). For many fans, it all became too much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tio, once such a fan of Timmy, describes herself as \u201cdeeply disappointed\u201d by his recent trajectory. \u201cHe seemed to have such a deep love and appreciation for [acting],\u201d she says, \u201cbut now it feels like something he wants to conquer and dominate, which makes me very angry. Maybe it\u2019s because he\u2019s playing more masculine roles, but it feels like a domination thing now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7614340821847936276\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Another former fan of Chalamet, Zara, has downgraded herself to the more neutral status of Timmy observer. \u201cPeople [at first] saw him as old money, European and elegant, but he has become American. Arrogant, greedy, dating the symbol of American excess: the Kardashians-Jenners.\u201d Zara doesn\u2019t actually think this backlash is fair, though. \u201cLowkey, he\u2019s been woman\u2019d,\u201d she adds. \u201cHe has a bit of arrogance and pride, and suddenly he\u2019s Satan.\u201d<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s Chalamet\u2019s failure to be humble, or at least to adequately perform humility, that seems to be alienating people the most. However, a<\/span><span>ccording to fan Lindsay, Timothee hasn\u2019t actually changed: we\u2019re just finally seeing what he really likes. \u201cI think he\u2019s been putting on an act for years because his appearance allowed him to slip into the soy boy crowd, and he knew that was what was going to make him money and get him the roles and attention,\u201d she suggests, adding that, now he\u2019s with Kylie Jenner and achieved the wild success he was aiming for, he no longer has to pretend. \u201cPeople have been ignoring lil Timmy Tim for too long, because they liked this cute boy image of him, but he is and always has been lil Timmy Tim,\u201d she says, referring to his infamous high school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iSm-9v34VmU\">rap alter-ego<\/a>. Maybe people have been projecting onto Timothee all this time, mistaking someone they don\u2019t know for the tortured, sensitive roles he inhabited in early films like <\/span><em><span>Call Me By Your Name<\/span><\/em><span> and <\/span><em><span>Beautiful Boy<\/span><\/em><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cLowkey, he\u2019s been woman\u2019d. He has a bit of arrogance and pride, and suddenly he\u2019s Satan\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Not everyone in the fandom is souring on Timmy in the same way, though. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/user\/IanaMurray\">Iana Murray<\/a>, a journalist and OG stan, understands where people are coming from and acknowledges that he <\/span><em><span>has<\/span><\/em><span> changed. But, she adds, \u201cI think people are holding onto a projection of this delicate French boy that was a product of the roles that made him famous. In his very first Jimmy Fallon appearance, he\u2019s practically vibrating in his seat from nervousness, and of course, that\u2019s really endearing, but I think it\u2019s naive to assume he\u2019s going to be just as overexcited eight years later when he\u2019s well settled into his celebrity.\u201d Rather than being driven by egotism alone, she suggests that Chalemet\u2019s heavy self-promotion is ultimately in service of a larger goal. \u201cI think he earnestly believes that he has this responsibility to ensure cinema and cinema-going survives, which is probably bolstered by the narrative that\u2019s circled him for years: that he\u2019s one of the very last movie stars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s no doubt an element of projection at play in people being upset to discover that a celebrity they don\u2019t know is, seemingly, a different person than how they\u2019d imagined. But when Chalemet is doing media appearances with Theo Von (a podcaster who is at the very least right-wing-coded) and reportedly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/timothee-chalamet-december-cover-2025-interview\"><span>telling<\/span><\/a><span><em> Vogue<\/em> that \u201cprocreation is the reason we\u2019re here\u201d, there are reasonable grounds to suspect that he\u2019s taken a more douchey turn. On the other hand, it\u2019s refreshing to see someone be so honest about their desire for greatness \u2013 better that than the faux-humility that we\u2019ve become to demand of our celebrities, which can be every bit as preening and self-flattering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A lot can be birthed through \u201cfailure\u201d, which many people view his Oscar loss to be. There is a rawness to it \u2013 a humanness. It\u2019s all very <\/span><em><span>Marty Supreme<\/span><\/em><span>. And as cultural critic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/user\/patricksproull\">Patrick Sproull<\/a> argues, Chalamet is increasingly becoming a performance artist. \u201cIt is so exciting to watch him perform as a celebrity,\u201d they tell Dazed. \u201cEverything he wears is a costume\u201d.
