\n\tLike lingering petrichor or damp earth, Meg Webster\u2019s\u00a0sculptures\u00a0envelop\u00a0the senses\u2014hardly surprising,\u00a0as\u00a0they\u00a0emerge\u00a0from\u00a0\u201csoil, sand, and salt,\u201d in the words of the Dia Art Foundation, a longtime guardian of her\u00a0work.\u00a0For years, visitors have been\u00a0invited to\u00a0step\u00a0around and\u00a0into\u00a0the shadow of her earthworks,\u00a0installed\u00a0as\u00a0mounds and pillars along the gallery floor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tStarting March 19, those\u00a0encounters will be bottled\u00a0and available year-round, thanks to a collaboration between Webster, Dia, and Comme\u00a0des Gar\u00e7ons, which has produced the artist\u2019s first signature perfume.\u00a0According to\u00a0a sample sent to the\u00a0ARTnews\u00a0<\/em>office, the scent is gender-neutral,\u00a0woodsy,\u00a0and slow-suffusing\u2014with\u00a0a\u00a0late spark\u00a0of\u00a0musk,\u00a0like\u00a0a\u00a0fallen\u00a0branch\u00a0underfoot, cracking the\u00a0stillness.\u00a0The fragrance is housed in a polished\u00a0silver tetrahedral (a triangular pyramid)\u00a0box, a form familiar\u00a0from\u00a0Webster\u2019s visual vocabulary.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI make sculptural works with natural materials, formed into primary geometric shapes meant to be directly perceived by the body. The making should be visible,\u201d Webster told ARTnews<\/em>. \u201cThe perfume we created with DIA strives to be a primary fragrance\u2014like the air after a spring rain or a walk in the deep forest.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tCollectors of the Japanese fashion label Comme des Gar\u00e7ons, founded by Rei Kawakubo in 1969, know it for striking, geometric constructions\u2014sometimes composed of boldly clashing fragments, each piece\u00a0apparently paused\u00a0in motion. In recent years, the label has forayed into arts and culture, previously crafting perfumes in collaboration with the Serpentine Galleries and Tracey Emin (\u201cfresh, light, yet deceivingly complex\u201d); the lifestyle publication Monocle; and the renowned composer Max Richter, whose scent evoked, among more,\u00a0graphite, piano soundboard, cedar, and violin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTo mark its collaboration with Webster, Comme des Gar\u00e7ons\u00a0will\u00a0install a work by the artist at their West 22nd Street store in Manhattan, across from\u00a0Dia\u2019s\u00a0Chelsea branch.\u00a0<\/em>Aptly titled\u00a0Copper Containing Salt II\u00a0<\/em>(2017),\u00a0the piece features\u00a0a single sheet of copper\u00a0curled\u00a0into a cylinder and filled to the brim with coarse rock salt. The two\u00a0seemingly\u00a0disparate\u00a0materials\u00a0make\u00a0a sleek, symbiotic\u00a0form:\u00a0The salt\u00a0relies\u00a0on the\u00a0copper\u00a0for\u00a0shape,\u00a0while\u00a0the copper\u00a0acquires\u00a0a tender\u00a0purpose\u00a0in\u00a0cradling\u00a0the salt.\u00a0Another salt cylinder by Webster is on view at Dia Beacon, uniting the two spaces through explorations of void, volume, and elemental materials.\u00a0
