{"id":1826916,"date":"2026-03-13T18:45:56","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T15:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1826916"},"modified":"2026-03-13T18:45:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T15:45:56","slug":"senators-call-on-gsa-to-proactively-protect-philip-guston-murals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1826916","title":{"rendered":"Senators Call on GSA to &#8216;Proactively&#8217; Protect Philip Guston Murals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[analyse_image type=&#8221;featured&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_7469_3453.jpg?w=800&#8243;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"a-content a-content--offset lrv-a-floated-parent lrv-u-font-family-body lrv-u-line-height-normal lrv-u-font-size-18 lrv-u-position-relative\">\n<div class=\"pmc-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn Wednesday, Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island) and Chuck Schumer (D-New York) sent an open letter to Ed Forst, administrator of the General Services Administration questioning the organization\u2019s management of its Fine Arts Program and the Fine Arts Collection. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe GSA cares for over 26,000 artworks and artifacts owned by the US government, including murals, paintings, sculptures, and environmental artworks by artists from Mark Rothko and Louise Nevelson to Jacob Lawrence and Philip Guston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the letter, the senators note that the GSA has posted 46 buildings that have been identified for \u201caccelerated disposal,\u201d a process that expedites the sale of the properties, which are home to numerous artworks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOf particular concern to the senators is the Wilbur J. Cohen Federal Building, which contain several murals celebrating the Social Security Act of 1935, a landmark piece of New Deal legislation. Among them is a suite of murals by Ben Shahn titled <em>The Meaning of Social Security<\/em>, with three panels depicting the ills of society before the New Deal, followed by several panels illustrating an idealized New Deal vision. The building also contains a large mural by Guston, <em>Reconstruction and Well-Being of the Family,<\/em> as well as two by Seymour Fogel, <em>Wealth of the Nation<\/em> and <em>The Security of the People<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs <em>ARTnews<\/em> reported in December, the building\u2014a D.C. landmark on both the National Register of Historic Places and the D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites\u2014was put up for sale by the Trump administration as part of cost-cutting measures. The administration has also considered demolishing the building and selling the land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cGSA is in the process of selling the building, but it has promised to obtain preservation covenants to ensure it can continue to maintain the murals after the Cohen Building\u2019s sale.
