The transitional season is warm enough to wear protective styles like twists and braids without risking scalp dryness, but cool enough to wear straightened looks like silk presses and blowouts without fear of sweating them out (though on the East Coast, at least, there is still the threat of unexpected spring showers). And, thanks to the longer days and added sunlight, I personally feel more excited about experimenting.<\/p>\n

And this spring<\/a>, there will be plenty of styles to choose from. Among 2026\u2019s trendiest natural hairstyles are the classic wash and go \u2014 a bouncy, defined style bursting with a vibrant energy perfectly suited to the season \u2014 and fluffy bobs<\/a>, the textured take on the Haircut of the Decade. For protective styles, the reign of the boho braids continues, this time in the form of vibey Fulani variations and (of course) bobs. The season will also be a big one for twists of all sizes, from breezy natural two-strands to fuller looks with extensions.<\/p>\n

This \u2018do is especially ideal \u201cfor curly and coily textures and for clients who want something low-maintenance but still polished,\u201d she notes \u2014 which is exactly the vibe for a spring style.<\/p>\n

Despite what the name might suggest, a great wash-and-go actually starts in the salon. \u201cThe most important factor is having a good haircut that supports the curl pattern,\u201d says Aub. \u201cClients with heavy heat damage or uneven layers may want to start with a corrective cut first so the curls can fall into place.\u201d And regardless of your hair\u2019s condition, she recommends \u201casking for a curl-focused haircut and a professional wash-and-go styling session.\u201d<\/p>\n

At home, \u201cproper sectioning and product application are key\u201d to ensure all your curls are hydrated and defined. \u201cI recommend using a leave-in conditioner followed by a curl cream or light gel for definition,\u201d she says. \u201cProducts like DevaCurl SuperCream<\/a> or DevaCurl Light Defining Gel<\/a> work well. Diffusing can help build volume, and refreshing the curls with water or a light leave-in between washes helps bring the style back to life.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the braider\u2019s, Harper says to ask for \u201cFulani boho braids with loose, curly pieces using pre-stretched braiding hair,\u201d and make sure to specify your desired size and length. \u201cThis look can also be created using a mix of G\u2011Clef Bulk and Vivatress Pre\u2011Stretched Hair<\/a>.\u201d (Pro tip: If your scalp is especially sensitive, she says you might want to request \u201clooser installation to minimize tension.\u201d)<\/p>\n

At home, make sure to sleep in a satin or silk bonnet to keep frizz at bay, and to hydrate your scalp with light oils or serums. You can also \u201cuse a curl\u2011refresh spray to revive the loose curly pieces and maintain the signature boho texture,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

At the salon, request \u201ca textured bob tailored to your curl pattern with internal layering. The goal is to maintain fullness while keeping the shape light and balanced.\u201d<\/p>\n

When styling, look for lightweight products that \u201chelp maintain volume without weighing curls down,\u201d like mousses (I like The Doux\u2019s Chief Rocka<\/a>) and curl creams. \u201cDiffusing helps enhance shape and lift, and refreshing with water or a light leave-in can bring the curls back between wash days.\u201d<\/p>\n

This long-lasting style works for pretty much everyone, especially folks who crave minimal upkeep and easy access to their scalp for care. \u201cHowever, if you prefer zero maintenance and don\u2019t want to brush or lightly tend to the hair, this may not be the best option,\u201d she notes.<\/p>\n

At the salon, \u201cask for a boho bob using human hair.\u201d And don\u2019t scrimp: \u201cThe quality of the hair significantly impacts the final result\u201d on this one, says Harper. For maintenance, keep the human hair detangled and oil-free, and \u201cdon\u2019t be afraid to wash your hair!\u201d When styling, \u201cuse a light curling cream or leave\u2011in conditioner,\u201d she instructs. \u201cMousse is optional; if used, choose a lightweight one.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a committed twist wearer for many years (with Marley twists sitting at the very top of my summer hair checklist this year), I\u2019ll be the first to sing the praises of this low-maintenance protective style. \u201cHuman hair twists, also known as natural hair twists, are a lightweight, versatile, long-lasting protective style,\u201d says Harper. \u201cThey mimic natural texture beautifully, and can be worn in many different ways.\u201d They\u2019re also low-tension and provide easy access to the scalp for care.<\/p>\n

While they\u2019re great for those seeking a \u201cnatural-looking protective style,\u201d Harper says folks with relaxed hair might want to skip this one, as \u201cthe straight ends may not blend well and won\u2019t create the fluffy, juicy twist finish that natural hair provides.\u201d<\/p>\n

She says to ask for \u201ctwo-strand twists\u201d at the salon if you\u2019re sticking to only your natural hair; if you want \u201cadded length, fullness, or longer wear,\u201d ask for \u201chuman hair twists.\u201d On the day-to-day, \u201cmix leave-in conditioner and water in a spray bottle, and spritz twists to keep them hydrated.\u201d (My personal fave is Lush Super Milk<\/a>.) Make sure to regularly oil your scalp for moisture, too.<\/p>\n
