Tadej Poga\u010dar and his Strade Bianche demolition left the peloton scattered across the Tuscan gravel and searching for answers.<\/p>\n

For anyone who dared to dream that the gap might narrow coming into 2026, Poga\u010dar vaporized them with an 80-kilometer nuclear raid that turned one of cycling\u2019s hardest classics into his latest solo project.<\/p>\n

Inside the peloton, the chatter around Poga\u010dar has now permanently shifted.<\/p>\n

No one even speaks about how to beat him.<\/p>\n

All that\u2019s left now is waiting for the day he beats himself.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the brutal paradigm in today\u2019s otherwise glittering Poga\u010dar era.<\/p>\n

Teams can crunch the data, dissect the power files, and now even experiment with AI-driven tactical analysis.<\/p>\n

Yet the song remains the same.<\/p>\n

On most terrain, in most races, and nearly every day he toes up to the line, Poga\u010dar is simply unbeatable.<\/p>\n

In the depths of last year\u2019s Pog-pulverization at the Tour de France, the refrain around the team buses was almost universal.<\/p>\n

All we can do is hope that Poga\u010dar has a bad day.<\/p>\n

Poga\u010dar is better than ever, but so is his team. <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

That\u2019s hardly inspirational bike racing, but it\u2019s the hard truth.<\/p>\n

I was asked recently on the Velo<\/em> podcast what I would do if I were a sport director trying to beat him.<\/p>\n

The honest answer? I didn\u2019t really have one.<\/p>\n

Because no one does<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the same query I\u2019ve been posing to managers and sports directors for years.<\/p>\n

On paper, the formula sounds simple enough: outperform him physically, isolate him tactically, and pounce at the moment he finally cracks.<\/p>\n

But away from the sound bites, none of those factors looks to be lining up soon.<\/p>\n

Or at least they haven\u2019t since 2023.<\/p>\n

Of course, no one wants to admit defeat before the flag even drops. It\u2019s something that cannot be said out loud.<\/p>\n

Since his rise, only two riders have consistently managed to beat Poga\u010dar head-to-head.<\/p>\n

Mathieu van der Poel, on a handful of specific days when the bergs of Belgium tilt in favor of his brute power and explosive punch.<\/p>\n

And Jonas Vingegaard, whose Tour de France victories in 2022 and 2023 came when everything did align perfectly, and Poga\u010dar did have bad days.<\/p>\n

Since then, it\u2019s been Poga-geddon<\/em> for 24 months and counting.<\/p>\n

Cycling has seen this movie before.<\/p>\n

The Merckx years carried the same fatalism. The Indur\u00e1in era revolved around waiting to be humiliated in the time trials.<\/p>\n

The now-maligned Armstrong era and later Team Sky\u2019s grand tour reign produced a similar dread of grand tour annihilation.<\/p>\n

When dominance reaches that soul-crushing level, the sense of collective futility produces a strange kind of psychological playback loop.<\/p>\n

Riders and teams line up knowing that winning is not a realistic option, so the game is already largely lost.<\/p>\n

What makes the Poga\u010dar era so different is how few races even offer the remote possibility of victory when he is at the start line.<\/p>\n

At least Chris Froome was never chasing the monuments.<\/p>\n

Across the calendar, there are only a handful of places where there\u2019s even a tinge of hope among his rivals. Milan-San Remo\u2019s toboggan run down the Poggio, the cobbled brutality of Flanders, and the chaos of Paris-Roubaix.<\/p>\n

Maybe three days. Unfortunately for his rivals, those three days are the ones he wants most.<\/p>\n

Everywhere else, the calculus is brutally simple. If Poga\u010dar is good, he wins.<\/p>\n

Teams are already adjusting their long-term strategies around this doomsday scenario.<\/p>\n

Vingegaard is targeting the Giro in a radical new approach to 2026. Remco Evenepoel might be going to the Tour this year, but that\u2019s part of a larger strategy to win years down the road<\/em>, not in 2026.<\/p>\n

Rivals will never work together to chase him down, even if that might seem like the only sane thing to do. Pro racing is too divided\u00a0for that.<\/p>\n

Last year, I asked several managers how, in a sport as hyper-competitive and data-driven as cycling, one rider could dominate the peloton so completely.<\/p>\n

The answers varied, but all ended with the same shrug of the shoulders, followed by booof<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It was a feeling of acceptance, admiration, and a growing sense of futility that comes with repeatedly beating one\u2019s head against an unmovable force.<\/p>\n

Since hitting a new level in 2024, Poga\u010dar has turned races into something resembling a one-man demolition derby, and now he\u2019s backed by one of the deepest UAE squads ever assembled.<\/p>\n

Races keep drifting toward a cut-and-paste outcome.<\/p>\n

A peloton starts with hope, Poga\u010dar quickly crushes those dreams with a long-distance raid, and the tattered chasers race for pride and leftovers.<\/p>\n

Even the hyped new wave of young guns is learning the lesson.<\/p>\n

The big worry now is that Pogacar\u2019s never-ending victory parade might start turning fans away.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a case to be made that women\u2019s cycling \u2014 with a more equitable distribution of talent \u2014 makes for much more dramatic and surprising outcomes.<\/p>\n

Saturday\u2019s Strade Bianche Donne certainly delivered more suspense.<\/p>\n

Right now, any sign of Pogi fatigue doesn\u2019t seem to be setting in.<\/p>\n

The crowds in Tuscany on Saturday were massive, drawn in large part because Pogi was there<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fans want to see the sport\u2019s 21st-century great in person.<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s an alluring beauty to watching Poga\u010dar operate at full flight.<\/p>\n

He isn\u2019t hiding in a train, surfing the wheels, or sniping victories on time bonuses.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s attacking from distances not seen since the black-and-white reels.<\/p>\n

Poga\u010dar is the rare intersection of freakish natural talent and modern Formula One science. He\u2019s part old-school guts and glory, layered onto today\u2019s cutting-edge technology.<\/p>\n

Just call him RoboPog<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And Pogi\u2019s engaging personality helps keep things fresh even as the lambs are led to slaughter.<\/p>\n

These are the times cycling is living in. Accept your fate. Things will change (eventually). Relish what\u2019s in front of you.<\/p>\n

So for now, the only tactic left against Poga\u010dar might simply be hope.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
