Far less common are florals for autumn, but we saw them in abundance during the AW26 fashion shows. Since January, the runways, presentations, re-sees and lookbooks have been relentless, but thankfully, there was one common theme that calmed some of the chaos: nature. Of course, this is no new thing \u2013 the natural world has always provided inspiration for designers. However, we can\u2019t ignore the sheer volume of greenery, woodland creatures and feathered friends present in recent collections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It showed up most obviously in the sets. At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/miu-miu\"><span>Miu Miu\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span> AW26 womenswear show in Paris earlier this week, guests arrived at the Palais d\u2019I\u00e9na to discover a room that was half palazzo, half overgrown forest. In our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69879\/1\/miu-miu-aw26-chloe-sevigny-gillian-anderson-pfw-paris-fashion-week\"><span>review<\/span><\/a><span> of the show, we described it as a scene from <\/span><em><span>Where the Wild Things Are, <\/span><\/em><span>the floor completely covered by a blanket of green moss. In Milan, at a show by sister brand\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/prada\"><span>Prada<\/span><\/a><span>, socks were embroidered with small, delicate daisies, and flowers climbed up the models\u2019 legs as if the earth was slowly consuming them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"dc5af200-59ff-4081-a761-b40b010d452c\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1999\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441503.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.67\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dior AW26 womenswear\" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441503.jpg\" width=\"1999\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Dior AW26 womenswear<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Photo by <span class=\"nowrap\">Estrop\/Getty Images<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>For Nicolas Ghesqui\u00e8re\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69868\/1\/alysa-liu-louis-vuitton-aw26-fw26-paris-fashion-week-pfw-nicolas-ghesquiere\"><span>AW26 Louis Vuitton show<\/span><\/a><span>, we saw a moss-covered landscape once again, this time designed by <\/span><em><span>Severance<\/span><\/em><span> production designer Jeremy Hindle, meanwhile, at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/dior\"><span>Dior<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/jonathan-anderson\"><span>Jonathan Anderson<\/span><\/a><span> has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69486\/1\/dior-haute-couture-ss26-jonathan-anderson-debut-paris-fashion-week-pfw\"><span>touching grass for a while now<\/span><\/a><span>. Prior to the AW26 season, his SS26 couture debut in January transformed the Mus\u00e9e Rodin into <\/span><em><span>The Secret Garden, <\/span><\/em><span>covering the ceiling in foliage. Then, for his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69812\/1\/dior-aw26-fw26-jonathan-anderson-paris-fashion-week-pfw\"><span>AW26 womenswear show<\/span><\/a><span>, the Irish designer went mad for water lilies, filling a corner of the Tuileries with fake flowers, adding them to shoes and bags, and even designing dresses that looked like lilies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>While the clothes became the flowers at Dior, several other designers opted for fauna over flora this season. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/chopova-lowena\"><span>Chopova Lowena<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0presented their AW26 collection with wooden mannequins holding their hands to their chests like little paws. The collection included hoods with ears knitted into them \u2013 one made to look like a black cat, the other like a little dog begging for its supper. Elsewhere, at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/moschino\"><span>Moschino<\/span><\/a><span>, rabbit ears stood to attention, while at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/noir-kei-ninomiya\"><span>Noir Kei Ninomiya<\/span><\/a><span>, rodents ruled the runway \u2013 with models carrying rats, squirrels and chipmunks in their hair, created by Shinji Konishi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"e056b33d-933c-4431-b91a-b40800e02dfd\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441087.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.8\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Noir Kei Ninomiya AW26\" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441087.jpg\" width=\"2400\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Noir Kei <span class=\"nowrap\">Ninomiya AW26<\/span><\/span><span class=\"credit\">Photography Jamie-Maree Shipton<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>In some cases, fashion\u2019s obsession with nature has gone as far as metamorphosis. At the less cute end of the spectrum to woodland creatures, we noticed that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69678\/1\/werewolves-trend-timothee-chalamet-twilight-gabe-gordon-furry\"><span>werewolves are so hot right now<\/span><\/a><span>, with models at Gabe Gordon sprouting fur and growing claws. Things were getting hairy at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/gallery\/36834\/5\/paris-fashion-week-aw26\"><span>Mati\u00e8res F\u00e9cales<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/rick-owens\"><span>Rick Owens<\/span><\/a><span> too. Arguably, both brands were already known for their supernatural designs, but their most recent collections took (faux) fur and feathers to surreal new heights. At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/erdem\"><span>Erdem<\/span><\/a><span>, the feet were covered entirely by black feathers, giving the appearance of some very hairy toes, and at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/central-saint-martins-ma\"><span>Central Saint Martins\u2019 MA show,<\/span><\/a><span> graduate Finnerty Mackay made trousers from expired condoms, which from afar, looked like Mr. Tumnus-style faun legs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Mackay\u2019s classmate, fellow CSM grad Macy Grimshaw, manipulated leather to look like parakeet feathers \u2013 not only has fashion been slowly metamorphosing into wolves, rabbits and fauns, but there\u2019s been a lot of birds too. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/schiaparelli\"><span>Schiaparelli<\/span><\/a><span> has been merging humans with animals since the days of Elsa, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/daniel-roseberry\"><span>Daniel Roseberry\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span> recent SS26 couture and AW26 collections took this a step further. The January couture show transformed models into birds of paradise, complete with dramatic wings and talons pointing from the breasts. This week\u2019s AW26 ready-to-wear show continued the theme \u2013 titled <\/span><em><span>Sphynx<\/span><\/em><span>, it took kitten heels literally, adorning them with cats\u2019 heads. At Egonlab\u2019s AW26 menswear show, one model had almost reached full transformation, his head and torso concealed by bright blue feathers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Then there\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/chanel\"><span>Chanel<\/span><\/a><span>. At couture, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/matthieu-blazy\"><span>Matthieu Blazy<\/span><\/a><span> turned the Grand Palais into a fairytale <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69496\/1\/chanel-ss26-couture-matthieu-blazy-debut-dua-lipa-nicole-kidman-asap-rocky\"><span>mushroom patch<\/span><\/a><span>, with gowns inspired by birds such as woodpeckers, peacocks, owls and swans. The Belgian designer addressed metamorphosis directly in his most recent AW26 ready-to-wear show, which referenced an interview that Coco Chanel gave during the 1950s. \u201cBe a caterpillar by day, and a butterfly by night,\u201d she said, with Blazy leaning into the trend metaphorically, rather than physically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Is this fashion\u2019s way of pushing back against AI? Is an escape to the countryside more tempting given the current state of global politics? When the world gets worse, designers tend to go one of two ways: they confront it, or transport us somewhere else entirely. Some balance both with subtlety. Or maybe it\u2019s simply that fashion has had enough screen time \u2013 are designers collectively pining for the great outdoors? Some want to take us for a stroll in the woods, others want to transform into an eagle and fly far away. Far less common are florals for autumn, but we saw them in abundance during the AW26 fashion shows. Since January, the runways, presentations, re-sees and lookbooks have been relentless, but thankfully, there was one common theme that calmed some of the chaos: nature. Of course, this is no new thing \u2013 the natural world has always provided inspiration for designers. However, we can\u2019t ignore the sheer volume of greenery, woodland creatures and feathered friends present in recent collections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It showed up most obviously in the sets. At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/miu-miu\"><span>Miu Miu\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span> AW26 womenswear show in Paris earlier this week, guests arrived at the Palais d\u2019I\u00e9na to discover a room that was half palazzo, half overgrown forest. In our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69879\/1\/miu-miu-aw26-chloe-sevigny-gillian-anderson-pfw-paris-fashion-week\"><span>review<\/span><\/a><span> of the show, we described it as a scene from <\/span><em><span>Where the Wild Things Are, <\/span><\/em><span>the floor completely covered by a blanket of green moss. Prior to the AW26 season, his SS26 couture debut in January transformed the Mus\u00e9e Rodin into <\/span><em><span>The Secret Garden, <\/span><\/em><span>covering the ceiling in foliage. Then, for his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69812\/1\/dior-aw26-fw26-jonathan-anderson-paris-fashion-week-pfw\"><span>AW26 womenswear show<\/span><\/a><span>, the Irish designer went mad for water lilies, filling a corner of the Tuileries with fake flowers, adding them to shoes and bags, and even designing dresses that looked like lilies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>While the clothes became the flowers at Dior, several other designers opted for fauna over flora this season. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/chopova-lowena\"><span>Chopova Lowena<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0presented their AW26 collection with wooden mannequins holding their hands to their chests like little paws. The collection included hoods with ears knitted into them \u2013 one made to look like a black cat, the other like a little dog begging for its supper. At the less cute end of the spectrum to woodland creatures, we noticed that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69678\/1\/werewolves-trend-timothee-chalamet-twilight-gabe-gordon-furry\"><span>werewolves are so hot right now<\/span><\/a><span>, with models at Gabe Gordon sprouting fur and growing claws. Things were getting hairy at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/gallery\/36834\/5\/paris-fashion-week-aw26\"><span>Mati\u00e8res F\u00e9cales<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/rick-owens\"><span>Rick Owens<\/span><\/a><span> too. Arguably, both brands were already known for their supernatural designs, but their most recent collections took (faux) fur and feathers to surreal new heights. At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/erdem\"><span>Erdem<\/span><\/a><span>, the feet were covered entirely by black feathers, giving the appearance of some very hairy toes, and at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/central-saint-martins-ma\"><span>Central Saint Martins\u2019 MA show,<\/span><\/a><span> graduate Finnerty Mackay made trousers from expired condoms, which from afar, looked like Mr. Tumnus-style faun legs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Mackay\u2019s classmate, fellow CSM grad Macy Grimshaw, manipulated leather to look like parakeet feathers \u2013 not only has fashion been slowly metamorphosing into wolves, rabbits and fauns, but there\u2019s been a lot of birds too. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/schiaparelli\"><span>Schiaparelli<\/span><\/a><span> has been merging humans with animals since the days of Elsa, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/daniel-roseberry\"><span>Daniel Roseberry\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span> recent SS26 couture and AW26 collections took this a step further. The January couture show transformed models into birds of paradise, complete with dramatic wings and talons pointing from the breasts. This week\u2019s AW26 ready-to-wear show continued the theme \u2013 titled <\/span><em><span>Sphynx<\/span><\/em><span>, it took kitten heels literally, adorning them with cats\u2019 heads. At Egonlab\u2019s AW26 menswear show, one model had almost reached full transformation, his head and torso concealed by bright blue feathers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Then there\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/chanel\"><span>Chanel<\/span><\/a><span>. At couture, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/matthieu-blazy\"><span>Matthieu Blazy<\/span><\/a><span> turned the Grand Palais into a fairytale <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69496\/1\/chanel-ss26-couture-matthieu-blazy-debut-dua-lipa-nicole-kidman-asap-rocky\"><span>mushroom patch<\/span><\/a><span>, with gowns inspired by birds such as woodpeckers, peacocks, owls and swans. The Belgian designer addressed metamorphosis directly in his most recent AW26 ready-to-wear show, which referenced an interview that Coco Chanel gave during the 1950s. \u201cBe a caterpillar by day, and a butterfly by night,\u201d she said, with Blazy leaning into the trend metaphorically, rather than physically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Is this fashion\u2019s way of pushing back against AI? Is an escape to the countryside more tempting given the current state of global politics? When the world gets worse, designers tend to go one of two ways: they confront it, or transport us somewhere else entirely. Some balance both with subtlety. Or maybe it\u2019s simply that fashion has had enough screen time \u2013 are designers collectively pining for the great outdoors? Some want to take us for a stroll in the woods, others want to transform into an eagle and fly far away.
