Sibyls<\/span><\/em><span> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/nan-goldin\">Nan Goldin<\/a>\u2019s origin story. You might also say there are few photo series as haunting. An assemblage of hospital reports, family photographs, and Goldin\u2019s own images, it is a tribute to the photographer\u2019s elder sister Barbara, who was institutionalised when she hit puberty and died by suicide at the age of 18. First screened in Paris in 2004 as one of Goldin\u2019s highly sensory slide shows \u2013 set to a blistering soundtrack spanning This Mortal Coil\u2019s <em>Song to the Siren<\/em> and Johnny Cash\u2019s <em>Hurt <\/em>\u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thamesandhudsonusa.com\/books\/sisters-saints-and-sibyls-hardcover\"><em><span>Sisters, Saints and Sibyls<\/span><\/em><\/a><span> is being reissued this month as a photo book, and is no less gut-wrenching for its existence on the printed page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Goldin <\/span><span>documents not just the events leading up to her sister\u2019s death, but the afterlife of her sister&#8217;s death \u2013 the way Barbara\u2019s story is intertwined with Goldin\u2019s own descent into, and emergence from, addiction. <\/span><span>\u201c<\/span><span>Every suicide kills more than one person,\u201d she writes, cutting to the truth of<\/span><span> this very particular kind of bereavement: the shockwaves it sends through families and communities upon impact, the aftershocks that continue to be felt across the<\/span><span> years. Those reverberations are innate to the structure of the series, which unfolds through narrative echoes and looping motifs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The book begins with the myth of the Christian martyr Saint Barbara, who was imprisoned in a tower and later beheaded by her own father for defying her parents\u2019 beliefs. We turn the page onto family por<\/span><span>traits and photographs of the Goldins in the 1940s and 50s \u2013 picture-perfect impressions of middle-class, midcentury American sub<\/span><span>urbia. Baby Barbara, born in Washington DC in 1946, is captured laughing and playing, her toothy smile lighting up the black-and-white <\/span><span>frames.<\/span><span>She is described as \u201ca precocious child\u201d who \u201cshined at school\u201d \u2013 \u201csparkling, bright, neat\u201d. \u201cMy sister taught me to watch the sunset. She washed my hair. She used to play <em>Moonlight Sonata<\/em> at midnight, when she had to babysit for me. She liked to mother me. I was her confidante,\u201d Goldin writes.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"04afeec4-ea0d-4380-b4ab-b40900fa0463\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/645\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441285.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"squarish\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.03\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"squarish\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nan Goldin, Sisters, Saints and Sibyls\" class=\"img\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/645\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441285.jpeg\" width=\"645\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Nan Goldin<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>As the timeline progresses, images from family photo albums are interspersed with the notes of doctors and caseworkers at the various psychiatric institutions Barbara was committed to throughout her teens. We are told that the \u201ctroubles\u201d between Barbara and her parents \u2013 her mother specifically \u2013 began when she was about 12. Her listed transgressions? Sneaking off to the movie theatre on Saturday afternoons \u201cto make out with unknown, \u2018undesirable\u2019 and older boys\u201d, \u201copen defiance\u201d, \u201csexually provocative behaviour\u201d, \u201cbecoming loud and coarse in speech\u201d. And, later, falling in love with a Black boxer, being \u201cattracted to other girls\u201d, being \u201cawkward and ungainly\u201d, \u201c(leaving) her legs unshaven\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Barbara\u2019s parents first sent her away to a detention centre 3,000 miles from home at the age of 14, then on to hospitals and mental health institutes, all of which she routinely attempted to escape. Revisiting these institutions in the early 2000s, Goldin retraces her sister\u2019s steps, incorporating into the series colour ima<\/span><span>ges of dimly lit <\/span><span>bedrooms with cuddly toys on the pillows, children\u2019s drawings, and locked rooms \u2013 the kind Barbara was committed to on account of her \u201cacting out behaviour\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We learn that after different doctors\u2019 assessments of Barbara, \u201cthey found that there was no diagnosis and that her problem was adjustment to adolescence\u201d, with some professionals even identifying her mother as the one who should be seeking psychiatric help. Even so, Barbara <\/span><span>continues<\/span><span> to be institutionalised until 1965 when, \u201con an April afternoon during cherry blossom season\u201d, while on a day pass from a mental health institute, she returns to the family\u2019s home town of Silver Spring in Maryland and takes her own life, the events described in agonising detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After Barbara\u2019s death, the focus of the series shifts to the young Nan, who, so convinced she would end up like her sister, ran away from home at 14 and \u201cfound (her) own family\u201d among the drag queens of downtown Boston. \u201cAt 18, I started to shoot dope, and shoot pictures. That saved my life,\u201d she recounts in sparse yet searing prose, alongside imagery of her hedonistic adolescence \u2013 snapshots recognisable from her most celebrated work, <em>The Ballad of Sexual Dependency<\/em>. And then: \u201cWhat I thought was my freedom, became my prison.\u201d Through still lifes and self-portraits, with at-times gruesome clarity, Goldin documents her years-long relationship with drugs, alcohol and self-harm, and her own admission into hospitals and rehab clinics.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"32a080a4-0976-4d0b-a173-b40900f9f7ae\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441280.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.52\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nan Goldin, Sisters, Saints and Sibyls\" class=\"img\" height=\"1969\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/1\/1441280.jpeg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Nan Goldin<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Goldin\u2019s unflinching gaze, the way she chronicles her sister\u2019s suffering and her own with equal parts artistry and journalistic precision, is an antidote to the narrative erasure and enforced silence attempted by her parents. \u201cMy mother said to the police: \u2018Tell the children it was an accident\u2019,\u201d Goldin recalls of her sister\u2019s death. \u201cThat was my moment of clarity that defined my life&#8230; The tyranny of revisionism even at the moment of greatest anguish. Suburbia. Don\u2019t let the neighbours know. Or even the children. Rewrite history immediately before it can be written.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It is for this reason that portraits of her mother and father in their old age, towards the end of the book, are so poignant. \u201cTo my precious parents\u2026 who have struggled bravely to survive for 90 years,\u201d Goldin writes in her dedication, hinting at a journey from anger towards forgiveness \u2013 or perhaps a tangle of the two, in the knotty grief that suicide leaves behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Goldin has since described her sister\u2019s rebellion as \u201ca starting point for my own\u201d. We bear witness to the self-destructive force of this rebellion, but also its regenerative potential. In thinking about the afterlife of a death, it becomes clear throughout the series how Barbara lives on in Goldin\u2019s art, in her passion, and in her desire to live a bold and honest life. Barbara\u2019s presence is felt in painterly images of moonlight and in tender snapshots of loved ones watching the sunset \u2013 just as she\u2019d taught her sister to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While <\/span><em><span>Sisters, Saints and Sibyls<\/span><\/em><span> is a historic meditation on the treatment of female mental health in the twentieth century \u2013 and the sexist, racist, homophobic undercurrents informing the pathologisation of self-expression, self-discovery, and girlhood back then \u2013 it remains, to this day, one of the few artworks addressing suicide and its aftershocks with such acuity. You might also say there are few photo series as haunting. An assemblage of hospital reports, family photographs, and Goldin\u2019s own images, it is a tribute to the photographer\u2019s elder sister Barbara, who was institutionalised when she hit puberty and died by suicide at the age of 18. First screened in Paris in 2004 as one of Goldin\u2019s highly sensory slide shows \u2013 set to a blistering soundtrack spanning This Mortal Coil\u2019s <em>Song to the Siren<\/em> and Johnny Cash\u2019s <em>Hurt <\/em>\u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thamesandhudsonusa.com\/books\/sisters-saints-and-sibyls-hardcover\"><em><span>Sisters, Saints and Sibyls<\/span><\/em><\/a><span> is being reissued this month as a photo book, and is no less gut-wrenching for its existence on the printed page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Goldin <\/span><span>documents not just the events leading up to her sister\u2019s death, but the afterlife of her sister&#8217;s death \u2013 the way Barbara\u2019s story is intertwined with Goldin\u2019s own descent into, and emergence from, addiction. <\/span><span>\u201c<\/span><span>Every suicide kills more than one person,\u201d she writes, cutting to the truth of<\/span><span> this very particular kind of bereavement: the shockwaves it sends through families and communities upon impact, the aftershocks that continue to be felt across the<\/span><span> years. Those reverberations are innate to the structure of the series, which unfolds through narrative echoes and looping motifs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The book begins with the myth of the Christian martyr Saint Barbara, who was imprisoned in a tower and later beheaded by her own father for defying her parents\u2019 beliefs. We turn the page onto family por<\/span><span>traits and photographs of the Goldins in the 1940s and 50s \u2013 picture-perfect impressions of middle-class, midcentury American sub<\/span><span>urbia. Baby Barbara, born in Washington DC in 1946, is captured laughing and playing, her toothy smile lighting up the black-and-white <\/span><span>frames.<\/span><span>She is described as \u201ca precocious child\u201d who \u201cshined at school\u201d \u2013 \u201csparkling, bright, neat\u201d. \u201cMy sister taught me to watch the sunset. She washed my hair. She used to play <em>Moonlight Sonata<\/em> at midnight, when she had to babysit for me. She liked to mother me. We are told that the \u201ctroubles\u201d between Barbara and her parents \u2013 her mother specifically \u2013 began when she was about 12. Her listed transgressions? Sneaking off to the movie theatre on Saturday afternoons \u201cto make out with unknown, \u2018undesirable\u2019 and older boys\u201d, \u201copen defiance\u201d, \u201csexually provocative behaviour\u201d, \u201cbecoming loud and coarse in speech\u201d. And, later, falling in love with a Black boxer, being \u201cattracted to other girls\u201d, being \u201cawkward and ungainly\u201d, \u201c(leaving) her legs unshaven\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Barbara\u2019s parents first sent her away to a detention centre 3,000 miles from home at the age of 14, then on to hospitals and mental health institutes, all of which she routinely attempted to escape. Revisiting these institutions in the early 2000s, Goldin retraces her sister\u2019s steps, incorporating into the series colour ima<\/span><span>ges of dimly lit <\/span><span>bedrooms with cuddly toys on the pillows, children\u2019s drawings, and locked rooms \u2013 the kind Barbara was committed to on account of her \u201cacting out behaviour\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We learn that after different doctors\u2019 assessments of Barbara, \u201cthey found that there was no diagnosis and that her problem was adjustment to adolescence\u201d, with some professionals even identifying her mother as the one who should be seeking psychiatric help. Even so, Barbara <\/span><span>continues<\/span><span> to be institutionalised until 1965 when, \u201con an April afternoon during cherry blossom season\u201d, while on a day pass from a mental health institute, she returns to the family\u2019s home town of Silver Spring in Maryland and takes her own life, the events described in agonising detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After Barbara\u2019s death, the focus of the series shifts to the young Nan, who, so convinced she would end up like her sister, ran away from home at 14 and \u201cfound (her) own family\u201d among the drag queens of downtown Boston. \u201cAt 18, I started to shoot dope, and shoot pictures. That saved my life,\u201d she recounts in sparse yet searing prose, alongside imagery of her hedonistic adolescence \u2013 snapshots recognisable from her most celebrated work, <em>The Ballad of Sexual Dependency<\/em>. Suburbia. Don\u2019t let the neighbours know. Or even the children. Rewrite history immediately before it can be written.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It is for this reason that portraits of her mother and father in their old age, towards the end of the book, are so poignant. \u201cTo my precious parents\u2026 who have struggled bravely to survive for 90 years,\u201d Goldin writes in her dedication, hinting at a journey from anger towards forgiveness \u2013 or perhaps a tangle of the two, in the knotty grief that suicide leaves behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Goldin has since described her sister\u2019s rebellion as \u201ca starting point for my own\u201d. We bear witness to the self-destructive force of this rebellion, but also its regenerative potential. In thinking about the afterlife of a death, it becomes clear throughout the series how Barbara lives on in Goldin\u2019s art, in her passion, and in her desire to live a bold and honest life. Barbara\u2019s presence is felt in painterly images of moonlight and in tender snapshots of loved ones watching the sunset \u2013 just as she\u2019d taught her sister to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While <\/span><em><span>Sisters, Saints and Sibyls<\/span><\/em><span> is a historic meditation on the treatment of female mental health in the twentieth century \u2013 and the sexist, racist, homophobic undercurrents informing the pathologisation of self-expression, self-discovery, and girlhood back then \u2013 it remains, to this day, one of the few artworks addressing suicide and its aftershocks with such acuity.
