That\u2019s why I was moved almost to tears over the weekend when People Who Like Opera and Ballet (PWLOB) launched a blistering hashtag campaign in response to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/timothee-chalamet\"><span>Timoth\u00e9e<\/span><span>Chalamet<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cI don\u2019t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about it,\u2019\u201d the actor sneered during a recent conversation with Matthew McConaughey about the future of movie theatres. \u201cNay, Mr Chalamet\u2026\u201d the PWLOB community cried in one voice, posting pictures of their Carmen and Giselle ticket snubs: \u201c#WeCare\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the other hand, maybe it wasn\u2019t that deep. As someone with no strong feelings about Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet and a vague fondness for opera and ballet, I think a lot of people are being annoying and bizarrely self-righteous about his comments. As well as the indignant culture vultures, and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PopCrave\/status\/2030890271446311098?s=20\"><span>cutting riposte from Doja Cat<\/span><\/a><span>, the backlash has veered into some bizarre directions. One Instagram voice expert <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DVml284D3_v\/?igsh=M3I1NHJjemxkMXA3\"><span>analysed<\/span><\/a><span> Chalamet\u2019s vocal delivery in the manner of an FBI agent profiling Hannibal Lecter (his \u201cregister drop and vocal fry\u201d is \u201csupposed to diffuse accountability\u201d; he\u2019s \u201csoftening his dismissal\u201d so \u201cit reads as an offhand observation as opposed to an attack\u201d \u2013 an attack on who!?). Several commentators have argued that Chalamet\u2019s remarks suggest a sinister rightward turn, a desire to cosy up to MAGA dude-bros and an anti-art philistinism bordering on the fascist. \u201cIn trying so hard for macho bravado, he stepped into old homophobic, anti-intellectual tropes,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVkMcdFDHbo\/?igsh=Z3VuYzBlY3d3bXl1\"><span>wrote <\/span><\/a><span>the artist Leo Herrera, suggesting it was part of a broader trend of \u201ctoxic, anti-woke, anti-arts bullshit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>This is the kind of criticism I\u2019d normally be sympathetic to, but in this case I\u2019m just not seeing it (partly because I no longer think of ballet and opera as particularly gay-coded \u2013 maybe if Timmy had come for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/addison-rae\">Addison Rae<\/a>\u2026). While his delivery was a little smug, Chalamet\u2019s point wasn\u2019t all that objectionable in the context of a long discussion about the future of movie theatres. At a time when cinemagoing is losing its position as a culturally central form of mass entertainment, he was pushing back against the popular idea that Gen Z\u2019s attention spans are too fried to allow them to sit still in a dark room for two hours. <\/span><span>The main point wasn\u2019t that cinema is superior to ballet; it was that the theatrical movie experience still has a future for a mass audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That hope, however, can only be cautious. It\u2019s true that there has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/film\/gen-z-are-going-to-the-cinema-more-than-ever-report-reveals-3919238\">cinema revival<\/a> among Gen Z, as Chalamet pointed out, this has been driven either by arthouse and repertory cinemas \u2013 mostly in big cities \u2013 or by a handful of major releases, many of them video-game adaptations.<\/span><span>\u00a0The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-03-31\/box-office-is-bleak-heres-how-local-theaters-are-surviving-the-downturn\"><span>overall trend<\/span><\/a><span> is downward, and it doesn\u2019t seem far-fetched to imagine that going to the cinema will one day become, like ballet and opera, a niche, rarified pursuit kept alive by a relatively small number of enthusiasts. Several Hollywood executives, including those at Netflix, seem determined to hurry this process along.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In fact, the kind of rhetoric Chalamet is alluding to with \u201chey, keep this thing alive\u201d is already being applied to cinema-going. What was once one of the most popular leisure activities in the world is increasingly discussed in \u201cuse it or lose it\u201d terms, normally reserved for your local anarchist bookstore or paying for a subscription to the<\/span><em><span> Washington Post<\/span><\/em><span>. It\u2019s hardly surprising that Chalamet, a Hollywood actor, would resist that framing. He just wants people to go to the cinema and \u2013 as his reference to <\/span><em><span>Barbenheimer<\/span><\/em><span> suggests \u2013 for films to be cultural events that everyone sees and then talks about at work the next day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content has-tweet\" data-embed-type=\"media-twitter\" data-script-depends=\"twitter-widgets\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Doja Cat defends ballet and opera after Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u2019s recent comments. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JCzYmMyRyD\">pic.twitter.com\/JCzYmMyRyD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Pop Crave (@PopCrave) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PopCrave\/status\/2030890271446311098?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 9, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Of course, he could have made this point without disparaging other art forms, but it\u2019s hard to get too outraged at someone using hyperbole: it isn\u2019t true that \u201cnobody cares about ballet and opera\u201d, but it is true that \u2013 compared to cinema \u2013 not very many do. I also don\u2019t think we can blame <\/span><span>Chalamet for the fact that opera and ballet are no longer mass entertainments. In 2026, there is probably a cap on how many people would be interested in giving them a try, but they are both prohibitively expensive and as such deeply exclusive \u2013 a lot more people would care about them if the average ticket didn\u2019t cost upwards of \u00a3100 or $100 (although London\u2019s Royal Opera House has, to its credit, a cheap tickets scheme for the under-30s). Beyond changing tastes, the real culprit is years of government funding cuts, both in the UK and the US, which have left many of the world\u2019s great opera houses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/08\/arts\/met-opera-peter-gelb-finances.html\"><span>struggling<\/span><\/a><span> to keep the lights on. You could argue that the dismissive attitude typified by Chalamet\u2019s remarks has helped to create the context for those cuts, but it would be a bit of a reach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While both ballet and opera have their elitist histories, rooted in high society and royal courts, they have at times been widely accessible and popular forms of entertainment. That is no longer the case. That\u2019s why I was moved almost to tears over the weekend when People Who Like Opera and Ballet (PWLOB) launched a blistering hashtag campaign in response to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/timothee-chalamet\"><span>Timoth\u00e9e<\/span><span>Chalamet<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cI don\u2019t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about it,\u2019\u201d the actor sneered during a recent conversation with Matthew McConaughey about the future of movie theatres. \u201cNay, Mr Chalamet\u2026\u201d the PWLOB community cried in one voice, posting pictures of their Carmen and Giselle ticket snubs: \u201c#WeCare\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the other hand, maybe it wasn\u2019t that deep. As someone with no strong feelings about Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet and a vague fondness for opera and ballet, I think a lot of people are being annoying and bizarrely self-righteous about his comments. As well as the indignant culture vultures, and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PopCrave\/status\/2030890271446311098?s=20\"><span>cutting riposte from Doja Cat<\/span><\/a><span>, the backlash has veered into some bizarre directions. One Instagram voice expert <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DVml284D3_v\/?igsh=M3I1NHJjemxkMXA3\"><span>analysed<\/span><\/a><span> Chalamet\u2019s vocal delivery in the manner of an FBI agent profiling Hannibal Lecter (his \u201cregister drop and vocal fry\u201d is \u201csupposed to diffuse accountability\u201d; he\u2019s \u201csoftening his dismissal\u201d so \u201cit reads as an offhand observation as opposed to an attack\u201d \u2013 an attack on who!?). Several commentators have argued that Chalamet\u2019s remarks suggest a sinister rightward turn, a desire to cosy up to MAGA dude-bros and an anti-art philistinism bordering on the fascist. \u201cIn trying so hard for macho bravado, he stepped into old homophobic, anti-intellectual tropes,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVkMcdFDHbo\/?igsh=Z3VuYzBlY3d3bXl1\"><span>wrote <\/span><\/a><span>the artist Leo Herrera, suggesting it was part of a broader trend of \u201ctoxic, anti-woke, anti-arts bullshit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>This is the kind of criticism I\u2019d normally be sympathetic to, but in this case I\u2019m just not seeing it (partly because I no longer think of ballet and opera as particularly gay-coded \u2013 maybe if Timmy had come for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/addison-rae\">Addison Rae<\/a>\u2026). While his delivery was a little smug, Chalamet\u2019s point wasn\u2019t all that objectionable in the context of a long discussion about the future of movie theatres. At a time when cinemagoing is losing its position as a culturally central form of mass entertainment, he was pushing back against the popular idea that Gen Z\u2019s attention spans are too fried to allow them to sit still in a dark room for two hours. <\/span><span>The main point wasn\u2019t that cinema is superior to ballet; it was that the theatrical movie experience still has a future for a mass audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That hope, however, can only be cautious. It\u2019s true that there has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/film\/gen-z-are-going-to-the-cinema-more-than-ever-report-reveals-3919238\">cinema revival<\/a> among Gen Z, as Chalamet pointed out, this has been driven either by arthouse and repertory cinemas \u2013 mostly in big cities \u2013 or by a handful of major releases, many of them video-game adaptations.<\/span><span>\u00a0The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-03-31\/box-office-is-bleak-heres-how-local-theaters-are-surviving-the-downturn\"><span>overall trend<\/span><\/a><span> is downward, and it doesn\u2019t seem far-fetched to imagine that going to the cinema will one day become, like ballet and opera, a niche, rarified pursuit kept alive by a relatively small number of enthusiasts. Several Hollywood executives, including those at Netflix, seem determined to hurry this process along.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In fact, the kind of rhetoric Chalamet is alluding to with \u201chey, keep this thing alive\u201d is already being applied to cinema-going. What was once one of the most popular leisure activities in the world is increasingly discussed in \u201cuse it or lose it\u201d terms, normally reserved for your local anarchist bookstore or paying for a subscription to the<\/span><em><span> Washington Post<\/span><\/em><span>. It\u2019s hardly surprising that Chalamet, a Hollywood actor, would resist that framing. He just wants people to go to the cinema and \u2013 as his reference to <\/span><em><span>Barbenheimer<\/span><\/em><span> suggests \u2013 for films to be cultural events that everyone sees and then talks about at work the next day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content has-tweet\" data-embed-type=\"media-twitter\" data-script-depends=\"twitter-widgets\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Doja Cat defends ballet and opera after Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u2019s recent comments. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JCzYmMyRyD\">pic.twitter.com\/JCzYmMyRyD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Pop Crave (@PopCrave) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PopCrave\/status\/2030890271446311098?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 9, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Of course, he could have made this point without disparaging other art forms, but it\u2019s hard to get too outraged at someone using hyperbole: it isn\u2019t true that \u201cnobody cares about ballet and opera\u201d, but it is true that \u2013 compared to cinema \u2013 not very many do. I also don\u2019t think we can blame <\/span><span>Chalamet for the fact that opera and ballet are no longer mass entertainments. In 2026, there is probably a cap on how many people would be interested in giving them a try, but they are both prohibitively expensive and as such deeply exclusive \u2013 a lot more people would care about them if the average ticket didn\u2019t cost upwards of \u00a3100 or $100 (although London\u2019s Royal Opera House has, to its credit, a cheap tickets scheme for the under-30s). Beyond changing tastes, the real culprit is years of government funding cuts, both in the UK and the US, which have left many of the world\u2019s great opera houses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/08\/arts\/met-opera-peter-gelb-finances.html\"><span>struggling<\/span><\/a><span> to keep the lights on. You could argue that the dismissive attitude typified by Chalamet\u2019s remarks has helped to create the context for those cuts, but it would be a bit of a reach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While both ballet and opera have their elitist histories, rooted in high society and royal courts, they have at times been widely accessible and popular forms of entertainment. That is no longer the case.
