\n\tJony Ive is arguably the world\u2019s most well-known product designer, famed for all the iMacs, iPods, iPhones, and Apple Watches he conceived during his nearly three-decade tenure with Apple Inc. Now, he can claim one major contribution to the art world as well.<\/p>\n
\n\tChristie\u2019s tapped LoveFrom, the design collective Ive founded with Marc Newson in 2019 soon after he left Apple, to design a new rostrum for the auction house. This sleek object, made of oak sourced from the same French forest that controversially supplied the wood used to rebuild the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, was unveiled at Christie\u2019s London headquarters yesterday.<\/p>\n
\n\tIt replaces Christie\u2019s original mahogany rostrum\u2014the raised platform behind which the auctioneer stands\u2014which was designed by the famous English woodworker Thomas Chippendale in the 1700s for James Christie, who founded his namesake auction house in 1766. Replicas of the Chippendale version have been used at Chrstie\u2019s numerous international headquarters for the past 260 years.<\/p>\n
\n\tAccording to a report by the Art Newspaper<\/em>, the original rostrum was destroyed in 1941 during the Blitz, when Christie\u2019s King Street location in London\u2014the same place where the new design was presented to the public\u2014was bombed.<\/p>\n \n\tIn a statement, Christie\u2019s said that \u201cthere was no other choice than Sir Jony Ive\u201d when it came time to re-design this ubiquitous piece of auction house furniture. <\/p>\n \n\tA representative from Christie\u2019s told ARTnews<\/em> that LoveFrom worked closely with Christie\u2019s auctioneers throughout the design process. \u201cOne of the most important things to get right was the sound of the gavel\u00a0on the wood. That moment when the hammer goes down\u00a0and the auctioneer calls\u00a0\u2018SOLD\u2019\u00a0needed\u00a0to\u00a0resonate.\u00a0The\u00a0sound of the gavel, crisp and sharp,\u00a0is part of the magic.
