{"id":1812312,"date":"2026-03-06T19:25:06","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T16:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1812312"},"modified":"2026-03-06T19:25:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T16:25:06","slug":"lebanese-minister-of-culture-appeals-to-unesco-for-extra-protections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1812312","title":{"rendered":"Lebanese Minister of Culture Appeals to UNESCO for Extra Protections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[analyse_image type=&#8221;featured&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2181399793.jpg?w=1024&#8243;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"a-content a-content--offset lrv-a-floated-parent lrv-u-font-family-body lrv-u-line-height-normal lrv-u-font-size-18 lrv-u-position-relative\">\n<div class=\"pmc-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLebanon\u2019s Ministry of Culture has appealed to UNESCO to provide additional protection for the nation\u2019s cultural heritage as the U.S.\u2013Israel\u2013Iran conflict spills into its southern borders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccording to a ministry statement on Wednesday, Culture Minister Ghassan Salam\u00e9 spoke by phone with Khaled El-Enany, director-general of UNESCO, urging the United Nations agency to intervene on Lebanon\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe minister reportedly told El-Enany: \u201cIn light of the current security situation in Lebanon and in the region, [we ask you] to intervene with neighboring states or belligerent parties to remind them of the need to take all preventive measures, during this armed conflict with Lebanon, to protect and preserve Lebanese cultural heritage and refrain from targeting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGhassan Salam\u00e9 directly appealed for greater protection of the National Museum of Beirut, a repository of thousands of years of Mediterranean history, as well as Lebanon\u2019s archaeological and historical sites, including Baalbek, a triad of Imperial Roman temples and UNESCO World Heritage Site; the eighth-century city of Anjar; and the Ouadi Qadisha (the Holy Valley), one of the earliest and most important Christian monastic settlements in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA UNESCO spokesperson told <em>Ocula<\/em> that the agency \u201cis already supporting Lebanon, as the organisation has communicated to all parties concerned the geographical coordinates of sites on the World Heritage List as well as those of national significance, to avoid any potential damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis week, Israel renewed airstrikes on Lebanon\u2014including heavy bombardment of Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs\u2014as tensions flare across the Levant amid an intensifying regional conflict involving Israel, Iran\u2011aligned Hezbollah, the US, and other Gulf states. Tens of thousands of Lebanese are fleeing Israel\u2011ordered mass evacuations of the country\u2019s southern region and parts of Beirut, a move the United Nations has warned may violate international law. Meanwhile, Lebanon\u2019s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the country now faces \u201ca humanitarian disaster,\u201d with displaced people forced to sleep in cars, on beaches, or on the streets<em>. Reuters<\/em> reports that at least 200 people in Lebanon have been killed while roughly 700 have been wounded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn April 2024, UNESCO granted enhanced protection to 34 historic Lebanese sites after an Israeli airstrike landed perilously close to the Roman ruins of Baalbek, sending thick plumes of black smoke across the site. Following weeks of appeals from Lebanese cultural authorities for international action\u2014particularly on behalf of Baalbek and Tyre, two of the six Lebanese sites inscribed on UNESCO\u2019s World Heritage List\u2014the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict granted the protection measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt the time, former UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said, \u201cUNESCO has a deep and long-standing cooperation with Lebanon.
