One recent retiree from the roadster circuit is this, the BMW Z4. There\u2019s a lot to like about the Crewe carmaker right now. It continues to manufacture in Britain in a factory that\u2019s long been carbon neutral. The prices, though \u2013 starting at around \u00a3170,000 for a base Bentayga, rising towards \u00a32m for a Batur or Blower \u2013 probably keep a few of us at arm\u2019s length from ownership.<\/p>\n<p>But used? There are Continental GTs galore for very tempting sums, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motors.co.uk\/car-77581442\/?i=7&amp;m=sr&amp;_gl=1*xcvgp6*_up*MQ..*_ga*MTY1OTM3NzcwMy4xNzcyNDYwNjkx*_ga_LJ27R55TCN*czE3NzI0NjA2OTAkbzEkZzAkdDE3NzI0NjA2OTAkajYwJGwwJGg5MTk4ODc1OQ\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">this one-owner, 4,000-mile GTC drop-top <\/a>in gloriously tasteful navy on tan, going to auction with the estimate of a modestly specced new Corsa. There can be few comfier ways to waft around in the spring sun\u2026 or shield yourself successfully from the inevitable rain thanks to its luxe fabric roof.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>The DB7 is the car that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-reviews\/aston-martin\/db7-coupe-1994\/v12-vantage-2dr\/first-drive\" data-entity-type=\"external\">saved Aston Martin<\/a>, launched in 1994 to immediately become its bestseller. Sketched by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/list\/have-look-ian-callums-incredible-back-catalogue-cars\" data-entity-type=\"external\">Ian Callum <\/a>(whatever happened to him?), its influence on the Vanquish, DB9 and countless other Astons that followed its design path is clear.<\/p>\n<p>Alright, the Volante cabrio version isn\u2019t as pure to look at and that pram-fold hood looks positively ancient now. But with the fabric folded and the 420bhp, 5.9-litre nat-asp V12 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1971312\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">this Vantage spec in full song,<\/a> you\u2019re unlikely to be fretting about anything. Save, perhaps, its next service bill\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>Twenty grand (or less) allows you to take your pick from the unmistakably 1990s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.co.uk\/car-details\/202512088460641\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">E36<\/a><a data-entity-type=\"external\">, the classically proportioned <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.co.uk\/car-details\/202510287468401\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">E46<\/a>, or the thrills (and bills!) of a V8-engined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.co.uk\/car-details\/202510287467934\" target=\"_blank\">E93<\/a>. You might have to justify choosing a drop-top M3 at your next cars \u2018n\u2019 coffee, but we all know M Division\u2019s commitment to engineering \u2013 these aren\u2019t going to be wobbly old cabrios that shake their door trim clean from its fixings at the first roundabout.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve also done you the duty of choosing a manual example of each, just to better fend off any derision from your petrolhead pals. As should a brisk run around the block in any of our trio \u2013 the saw-toothed edge of those earlier straight-six cars or the booming burble of the E93\u2019s 4.0-litre engine, with no annoying roof to swallow the sound, should hush even the most vociferous critics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>Oh, you want glorious roof-down sound, do you? There\u2019s surely nothing better for our thirty grand budget. The Maserati 4200 GT and its racier GranSport spin-off called upon a sonorous, 4.2-litre, naturally aspirated V8 engine for motive power. Its 400bhp peak is delivered at 7,000rpm, and never mind the clunky, semi-automatic Cambiocorsa gearchanges that\u2019ll get you there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Better to avoid too many paddle pulls and just keep those revs high \u2013 an experience all the more memorable with its soft-top stowed away and those antiquated old rollover hoops proudly pointing at the sky. When even <em>they<\/em> can\u2019t besmirch a car\u2019s beauty, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1845094\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">you know it\u2019s a keeper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>Our ears already detect the angry tapping of keys. Few cars in the 21st century attracted quite as much, <em>ahem<\/em>, discourse as the Evoque Convertible. But for a certain period of the late 2010s, you couldn\u2019t move for these things in suburban London, most of them painted in cheery launch orange. But where did they all go?<\/p>\n<p>Despite its open-top schtick \u2013 something of a USP until the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.co.uk\/car-details\/202602139894857\" target=\"_blank\">Volkswagen T-Roc<\/a> followed its lead \u2013 every example we\u2019ve uncovered for sale uses a diesel engine. <a href=\"https:\/\/buy.landrover.co.uk\/approved-used\/vehicle\/fuji-white-range-rover-evoque-5506796?financeMethod=cash&amp;categorySorting=%7B%22method%22%3A%22price%22%2C%22order%22%3A%22ASC%22%7D&amp;radius=nationwide\" target=\"_blank\">This one<\/a> is from the autumn of the car\u2019s scant, two-year production run, and thus comes in more powerful, 236bhp \u2018SD4\u2019 form. Decent performance, then. And at the price of a top-spec Dacia Spring, who cares about cool points.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>Convertible cars come in all shapes and forms: agile sportsters, hardcore track tools, rorty muscle cars, plush four-seat capsules and ostentatious style statements.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow this Merc C63 Cabriolet manages to resemble all those things at once, combining deft handling, a hooligan soundtrack and premium design in one, indomitable package. On those terms, the \u00a329,995 demanded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.co.uk\/car-details\/202601129090132\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">this 2017 example <\/a>(with a sensible mileage) feels like an outright bargain. It\u2019s five cars for the price of one!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>The Mazda MX-5 has been the undisputed leader of the cheap cabrio market for years. Which does bring its own ubiquity and \u2013 in a roll call full of Porsches, Bentleys and Astons like this \u2013 the potential for buyers to shrug their shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Unless, that is, BBR has had its wicked way. The long-time tuner of MX-5s can craft yours into whatever sharpened tool you crave, whether it\u2019s a slightly gnarlier road car or an athletic trackday whippet. <a href=\"https:\/\/bbrgti.com\/blogs\/cars-for-sale\/2009-mazda-mx-5-track-hill-climb-car-bbr-super-225\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">This Super 225<\/a> certainly falls into the latter category \u2013 all cages \u2018n\u2019 harnesses \u2013 and at a whisker over \u00a312k, offers a shortcut into amateur motorsport that we\u2019re finding devilishly hard to resist. No ubiquity here, folks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>Audi used to lead the way on posh, stylish cabrios. A3, A5, TT and R8 convertibles were all offered at the same time and now, <em>nada<\/em>. Sportbacks have usurped sports cars, and while 14 models currently populate Audi\u2019s online configurator, they\u2019re all decidedly fixed of roof. Perhaps its new design revolution \u2013 led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/first-look\/should-beautiful-audi-concept-c-be-next-gen-tt\" data-entity-type=\"external\">Concept C<\/a> \u2013 will bring a bit of diversity back.<\/p>\n<p>The design study does appear to have an open roof (of sorts), so let\u2019s cross all our fingers that a new TT Roadster is coming. At least in spirit. Because the last one, across all three of its generations, was a svelte-looking, decent driving thing and a joyous form of transport with the sun shining. <em>And<\/em> when the weather was drearier in the 3.2-litre V6-powered quattro form we\u2019ve handpicked here.<\/p>\n<p>Comfortably under \u00a310k gives you the option of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.co.uk\/car-details\/202511147901451\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">original Mk1 TT<\/a>, and one the first appearances of a DSG twin-clutch \u2018box, or its sleeker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.co.uk\/car-details\/202602240178150\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Mk2 replacement<\/a>, with the classifieds demanding very similar money for either iteration. The older car has a more obvious \u2018future classic\u2019 skew, however.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>TT not hardcore enough? Walk this way. Our thirty grand budget can snare various flavours of Lotus Elise, surely the sweetest handling of all the lightweight roadsters. Among those \u2018various flavours\u2019 is one wearing Vauxhall badges on its extremities and a turbocharger upon its engine.<\/p>\n<p>Developed alongside the Series 2 Elise, the VX220 launched in 2000 in stock, 144bhp 2.2-litre form. But it\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1772220\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">197bhp 2.0-litre Turbo of 2003 <\/a>that you really want. These engines weren\u2019t shared with Lotus and the VX even got ABS and an airbag to help lure Vectra and Omega owners to the dark side of the showroom. It\u2019s a deft thing to drive, though its boosted, mid-engined swagger caught some buyers out early doors. Hardcore indeed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>Another chapter in \u2018unexpectedly turbocharging a nat-asp icon\u2019, the pairing of Fiat and Abarth 124 Spider took all the most rigid bits of the ND-gen Mazda MX-5 and trotted them in another direction entirely. Likeable things they were, too, if always a mite less satisfying than their Japanese base car.<\/p>\n<p>The racier of the duo was given away via some tempting lease deals new, and so plenty occupy the classifieds now. It\u2019s Abarth by numbers: uncouth damping, rorty soundtrack and vibrant colours and decal packs. For those precise reasons it now appears a bit of a charmer at just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.co.uk\/car-details\/202509126273936\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">half its original price tag<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>Though if it\u2019s rorty soundtracks and colours you seek, you\u2019d better head to Blackpool. The long-awaited TVR comeback has ground to a halt, though the chance of buying a shiny new Griffith <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/business\/breaking-news-tvr-back-again-and-itll-go-electric-future\" data-entity-type=\"external\">remains almost within grasp.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Can\u2019t handle the anticipation? Then calm your nerves (or more likely, fray them further) by spending a piffling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1947510\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a325k on its Nineties namesake.<\/a> Five litres and 320 horsepower hustling along a tonne of fibreglass and leather should furnish you with much more immediate concerns than if we\u2019ll ever see Griffiths sold new again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>Plenty of classics fall neatly below \u00a330,000, but we suspect the world of MGBs and Spitfires holds a bit less appeal to you than one of these. The Spider name spans numerous decades and body styles, but surely this classic shape \u2013 produced in one form or another between 1966 and \u201993 \u2013 is the most alluring of all and remains one of the most romanticised on Planet Car.<\/p>\n<p>Performance will be modest and spare parts wilfully difficult to come by; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/l\/C1966701\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">you\u2019ll probably love it regardless.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>Or how about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoscout24.com\/offers\/peugeot-504-2-0-cabrio-inj-gasoline-white-fbfa43db-7fa9-49fa-abc3-429b2dfa363c?sort=standard&amp;desc=0&amp;position=4&amp;source_otp=t10&amp;source=listpage_search-results&amp;order_bucket=unknown&amp;boost_level=t10&amp;applied_boost_level=t10&amp;relevance_adjustment=organic&amp;boosting_product=none\" target=\"_blank\">one of these? <\/a>Pretty cars have been a running theme across (most of) Peugeot\u2019s history, and the Pininfarina-penned 504 Coupe is perhaps the coolest, most insouciant Lion of all. Enough to warrant a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/paris-motor-show\/heres-why-peugeot-e-legend-cool\">latter-day electric rebirth<\/a>, in fact.<\/p>\n<p>Lopping the roof from a 504 barely affects its swagger and we can think of few better things to roll onto LeShuttle and explore the swishing plains of Northern France in. Just get good breakdown cover, yeah?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>The 997 generation of Porsche 911 is widely considered one of the most appealing of all. It\u2019s a neat bridge between the old and new, balancing classic 911 proportions and dimensions with a \u2018just right\u2019 amount of modernity and tech to make it useable every single day.<\/p>\n<p>Which also means prices remain robust unless \u2013 it seems \u2013 you seek the less cool Cabriolet. A whisker over \u00a320k gets you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motors.co.uk\/car-77315090\/?i=8&amp;m=sr&amp;_gl=1*19uh1k7*_up*MQ..*_ga*MzY4ODk5MjE1LjE3NzI0NjM1OTE.*_ga_LJ27R55TCN*czE3NzI0NjM1OTAkbzEkZzAkdDE3NzI0NjM1OTAkajYwJGwwJGgyMDc2Njc3ODk5\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">this 100,000-mile example<\/a> with a strong spec and service history. Not unlike the C63 further up the page, this is a car that ticks almost every possible facet of modern convertible ownership.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>TopGear.com couldn\u2019t in good faith talk \u2018attainable soft-tops\u2019 without extolling the virtues of the Seven. Everything else on this list can claim some semblance of daily useability; a Caterham demands copious imagination and gumption for everyday use, but it\u2019s certainly not impossible. So long as you don\u2019t mind giving lorries a wide berth and driving with the white-knuckled attentiveness of a biker, anyhow.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll not bore you senseless with a complete dive into the intricate world of Seven specs, but trust that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1950382\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">this 310R SV <\/a>is a thoroughly appealing blend of frenzied performance and vague liveability.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>Yep, the internet\u2019s favourite hot hatch was briefly sold in convertible form. Attempting to combine so many trades ensured this Mk6 Golf spin-off mastered absolutely none of them, but a car that was easy to criticise new \u2013 its price north of a Porsche Boxster at \u00a339k \u2013 is now a thoroughly appealing diversion used.<\/p>\n<p>Just ten grand procures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.co.uk\/car-details\/202602119839855?calc-deposit=1000&amp;calc-term=48&amp;calc-mileage=10000\" data-entity-type=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">a car wearing modest miles,<\/a> though be mindful that, in a shocking deviation from Golf R lore, it\u2019s front-wheel drive only.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Buying an affordable cabriolet used to be simple.
