Formerly known as the Department of Defence, before an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/4295826\/trump-renames-dod-to-department-of-war\/\"><span>aggressive rebranding<\/span><\/a><span> in September last year, the DoW made an agreement with the leading AI company in late February, which allowed the use of its AI tech across classified government systems. In other words, that friendly chatbot helping with your homework is also being used by the US to help wage war in Iran and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/latest-news\/microsoft-openai-allegedly-aided-israeli-targeting-in-gaza-through-ai-cloud-services\/\">allegedly<\/a>, identify targets amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Admittedly, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweaked the terms of the arrangement with the DoW on Monday (March 2) after admitting that the initial agreement looked \u201copportunistic and sloppy\u201d. Under the new terms, there are apparently stronger guarantees that the company\u2019s systems won\u2019t be used for domestic surveillance <\/span><span>(AKA the government spying on its own citizens)<\/span><span>. But that raises the question: why is a $700+ billion AI company making sloppy deals with the US government in the first place? And did OpenAI really alter the deal to protect humanity\u2019s best interests, or just to appease the users who uninstalled the app in protest? On a personal level, can we continue using these kinds of tools with a clear conscience?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><span>THE GIRLS ARE FIGHTING<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span>First, some background. On Friday, February 27, Donald Trump ordered all federal agencies to stop using AI tools produced by Anthropic, the company that created the ChatGPT competitor Claude. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116144552969293195\"><span>post<\/span><\/a><span> on Truth Social, the president branded Anthropic\u2019s employees \u201cleft-wing nut jobs\u201d and declared: \u201c<\/span><span>THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL NEVER ALLOW A RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY TO DICTATE HOW OUR GREAT MILITARY FIGHTS AND WINS WARS!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What was Trump talking about? Well, Anthropic has been working with the US Department of War for some time, with the US military reportedly using Claude during the kidnapping of Venezuelan president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro in January. \u201c<\/span><span>I believe deeply in the existential importance of using AI to defend the United States and other democracies, and to defeat our autocratic adversaries,\u201d wrote Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/statement-department-of-war\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span>. However, he goes on to say that his company draws the line at using its tools for \u201cmass domestic surveillance\u201d and \u201cfully autonomous weapons\u201d that take human decision-making out of warfare. Since AI systems <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/news\/artificial-intelligence-under-nuclear-pressure-first-large-scale-kings-study-reveals-how-ai-models-reason-and-escalate-under-crisis\"><span>still seem<\/span><\/a><span> worryingly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/61886\/1\/ai-chatbots-are-worryingly-enthusiastic-about-nuclear-war-chatgpt-gpt4-openai\"><span>enthusiastic about nuclear war<\/span><\/a><span>, this feels like a good call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For the US government, though, this was a sticking point. In negotiations for a $200 million contract, it demanded that Anthropic open up its systems for all lawful uses (\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/8\/abduction-of-venezuelas-maduro-illegal-despite-us-charges-experts-say\"><span>lawful<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d being a pretty flexible term under the second Trump administration) or risk being cut off completely from government business. Obviously, Anthropic stood its ground, leading Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/secwar\/status\/2027507717469049070?s=46\"><span>brand it<\/span><\/a><span> a \u201csupply-chain risk to national security\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content has-tweet\" data-embed-type=\"media-twitter\" data-script-depends=\"twitter-widgets\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">ChatGPT, bomb that children&#39;s hospital<\/p>\n<p>ChatGPT:<\/p>\n<p>Pause.<br \/>That&#39;s not just a children&#39;s hospital\u2014that&#39;s a hotel for terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>And honestly? You&#39;re a hero.<\/p>\n<p>Missiles have been launched.\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CrK714KucU\">pic.twitter.com\/CrK714KucU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; vx-underground (@vxunderground) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vxunderground\/status\/2027613100870930541?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><span>OPENAI\u2019S \u2018SLOPPY\u2019 DEAL<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span>While Anthropic took the high ground, OpenAI signed a deal with the Department of War instead. \u201cIn all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome,\u201d said CEO Sam Altman in a statement on the deal (is the \u201cdeep respect for safety\u201d in the room with us now?). Like Anthropic, he adds, prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for use of force are both \u201cimportant safety principles\u201d for OpenAI. However, critics remain sceptical about the company\u2019s ability to hold to these principles now that the deal is done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn light of what external lawyers and the Pentagon are saying, OpenAI employees\u2019 default assumption here should unfortunately be that OpenAI caved [and] framed it as not caving, and screwed Anthropic while framing it as helping them,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/miles_brundage\/status\/2027768822372135318\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0AI policy researcher (and former OpenAI head of policy research) Miles Brundage on X. As of writing, 100 current OpenAI employees and 872 Google employees have signed an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/notdivided.org\/\"><span>open letter<\/span><\/a><span> condemning the negotiations that pitch their respective companies against Anthropic, with other experts framing the situation as a typical Moloch trap (a competitive scenario where ultimately everybody loses out&#8230; and we <\/span><em><span>maybe <\/span><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/60416\/1\/kill-moloch-demon-driving-humanity-brink-extinction-ai-oppenheimer-nuclear-bomb\"><span>usher in the apocalypse<\/span><\/a><span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>THE STICKY ETHICS OF USING AI<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span>In the fallout from the Department of War deal, Anthropic\u2019s Claude hit the number one spot in Apple\u2019s app rankings, with ChatGPT falling to number two (after losing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/barrycollins\/2026\/03\/02\/leaving-chatgpt-make-sure-to-do-this-before-you-cancel\/\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> 1.5 million users). Nevertheless, ChatGPT remains one of the most popular apps in the world, hitting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/02\/27\/chatgpt-reaches-900m-weekly-active-users\/\"><span>900 million<\/span><\/a><span> weekly active users in late February, with 50 million paying subscribers. As much as it might generate controversial headlines, it doesn\u2019t look set to disappear any time soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>How do millions of users reconcile the use of OpenAI\u2019s tools, while knowing that the company is aiding the US government as it embarks on aggressive foreign wars and increasingly authoritarian domestic policy? Or that it reportedly aided Israeli targeting in Gaza, alongside its partner Microsoft? Or that generative AI continues to have a significant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/66031\/1\/environmental-cost-chatgpt-climate-crisis-fitness-plans-grocery-lists\"><span>environmental impact<\/span><\/a><span>, despite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/earth.org\/media-shied-away-from-climate-coverage-in-2025-despite-increased-reader-interest\/\"><span>declining<\/span><\/a><span> media coverage of climate issues?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The easy answer is: ChatGPT is simply so useful, and so widespread, that most people are willing to look the other way. It also helps that AI literacy remains fairly low, despite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2025\/05\/why-ai-literacy-is-now-a-core-competency-in-education\/\"><span>shifting attitudes<\/span><\/a><span> around education, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/00222429251314491\"><span>correlates<\/span><\/a><span> with greater receptivity: people with low AI literacy tend to perceive it as more magical or human-like than those who understand it better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content has-tweet\" data-embed-type=\"media-twitter\" data-script-depends=\"twitter-widgets\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hey did you accidentally bomb Iraq instead of Iran???<\/p>\n<p>ChatGPT: You\u2019re absolutely right good catch! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xDDqMyywzz\">https:\/\/t.co\/xDDqMyywzz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Danny Polishchuk (@Dannyjokes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dannyjokes\/status\/2027582446989160808?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><span>ARE THERE ANY DECENT ALTERNATIVES?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span>If you\u2019re looking to put some distance between yourself and ChatGPT amid the latest controversy, there are no easy answers about what tools you can replace it with. Despite refusing to cross its \u201cred lines\u201d with the DoW, Anthropic, the most obvious alternative, is deeply tangled up with the US military, and was \u201ccentral\u201d to the initial strike on Iran via a partnership with the Peter Thiel-founded Palantir (although this may be breaking down thanks to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/palantir-faces-challenge-remove-anthropic-pentagons-ai-software-2026-03-04\/\"><span>pushback<\/span><\/a><span> from the Pentagon)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Palantir has also been working with the UK government to \u201c<\/span><span>transform lethality on the battlefield\u201d as well as being awarded a seven-year, \u00a3330 million contract with the NHS in 2023. This shows how difficult it is to separate ourselves from certain AI systems even if we <\/span><em><span>want <\/span><\/em><span>to \u2013\u00a0a phenomenon known as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/68862\/1\/not-everyone-wants-to-use-ai-but-do-we-still-have-a-choice\"><span>consent collapse<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are a few alternatives to the major AI apps, of course, like the Chinese model <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/65964\/1\/deepseek-r1-did-china-just-win-the-ai-arms-race-1-trillion-us-stock-openai\">DeepSeek<\/a>, or Le Chat, a chatbot designed by the French company Mistral to adhere to strict EU guidelines. Often, though, these come with their own concerns about safety, security, and bias, or they\u2019re simply not as powerful as their more established counterparts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Then, there\u2019s the cost of leaving a tool (like OpenAI) that already \u2018knows\u2019 you and how best to serve your needs. This could be seen as a version of what the tech critic Cory Doctorow calls \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/69360\/1\/slop-enshittification-2025-internet-implode-shumon-basar-gunseli-yalcinkaya\"><span>enshittification<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d, where platforms lure you in, then make the cost of leaving so high that they can make the product worse in the knowledge that users will stay. But in this case,\u00a0 instead of ruining your experience with ads and slop, the system is eating away at your conscience while holding you hostage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When all\u2019s said and done, boycotting AI tools is a personal decision, even if it <\/span><em><span>is <\/span><\/em><span>tangled up in big political questions. But it&#8217;s worth being mindful of the individuals, organisations, and aims you\u2019re serving when you pay for another month of ChatGPT, so you can at least make an informed decision. Formerly known as the Department of Defence, before an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/4295826\/trump-renames-dod-to-department-of-war\/\"><span>aggressive rebranding<\/span><\/a><span> in September last year, the DoW made an agreement with the leading AI company in late February, which allowed the use of its AI tech across classified government systems. In other words, that friendly chatbot helping with your homework is also being used by the US to help wage war in Iran and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/latest-news\/microsoft-openai-allegedly-aided-israeli-targeting-in-gaza-through-ai-cloud-services\/\">allegedly<\/a>, identify targets amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Admittedly, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweaked the terms of the arrangement with the DoW on Monday (March 2) after admitting that the initial agreement looked \u201copportunistic and sloppy\u201d. Under the new terms, there are apparently stronger guarantees that the company\u2019s systems won\u2019t be used for domestic surveillance <\/span><span>(AKA the government spying on its own citizens)<\/span><span>. But that raises the question: why is a $700+ billion AI company making sloppy deals with the US government in the first place? And did OpenAI really alter the deal to protect humanity\u2019s best interests, or just to appease the users who uninstalled the app in protest? On a personal level, can we continue using these kinds of tools with a clear conscience?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><span>THE GIRLS ARE FIGHTING<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span>First, some background. On Friday, February 27, Donald Trump ordered all federal agencies to stop using AI tools produced by Anthropic, the company that created the ChatGPT competitor Claude. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116144552969293195\"><span>post<\/span><\/a><span> on Truth Social, the president branded Anthropic\u2019s employees \u201cleft-wing nut jobs\u201d and declared: \u201c<\/span><span>THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL NEVER ALLOW A RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY TO DICTATE HOW OUR GREAT MILITARY FIGHTS AND WINS WARS!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What was Trump talking about? Well, Anthropic has been working with the US Department of War for some time, with the US military reportedly using Claude during the kidnapping of Venezuelan president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro in January. \u201c<\/span><span>I believe deeply in the existential importance of using AI to defend the United States and other democracies, and to defeat our autocratic adversaries,\u201d wrote Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/statement-department-of-war\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span>. However, he goes on to say that his company draws the line at using its tools for \u201cmass domestic surveillance\u201d and \u201cfully autonomous weapons\u201d that take human decision-making out of warfare. Since AI systems <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/news\/artificial-intelligence-under-nuclear-pressure-first-large-scale-kings-study-reveals-how-ai-models-reason-and-escalate-under-crisis\"><span>still seem<\/span><\/a><span> worryingly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/61886\/1\/ai-chatbots-are-worryingly-enthusiastic-about-nuclear-war-chatgpt-gpt4-openai\"><span>enthusiastic about nuclear war<\/span><\/a><span>, this feels like a good call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For the US government, though, this was a sticking point. In negotiations for a $200 million contract, it demanded that Anthropic open up its systems for all lawful uses (\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/8\/abduction-of-venezuelas-maduro-illegal-despite-us-charges-experts-say\"><span>lawful<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d being a pretty flexible term under the second Trump administration) or risk being cut off completely from government business. Like Anthropic, he adds, prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for use of force are both \u201cimportant safety principles\u201d for OpenAI. However, critics remain sceptical about the company\u2019s ability to hold to these principles now that the deal is done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn light of what external lawyers and the Pentagon are saying, OpenAI employees\u2019 default assumption here should unfortunately be that OpenAI caved [and] framed it as not caving, and screwed Anthropic while framing it as helping them,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/miles_brundage\/status\/2027768822372135318\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0AI policy researcher (and former OpenAI head of policy research) Miles Brundage on X. As of writing, 100 current OpenAI employees and 872 Google employees have signed an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/notdivided.org\/\"><span>open letter<\/span><\/a><span> condemning the negotiations that pitch their respective companies against Anthropic, with other experts framing the situation as a typical Moloch trap (a competitive scenario where ultimately everybody loses out&#8230; and we <\/span><em><span>maybe <\/span><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/60416\/1\/kill-moloch-demon-driving-humanity-brink-extinction-ai-oppenheimer-nuclear-bomb\"><span>usher in the apocalypse<\/span><\/a><span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>THE STICKY ETHICS OF USING AI<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span>In the fallout from the Department of War deal, Anthropic\u2019s Claude hit the number one spot in Apple\u2019s app rankings, with ChatGPT falling to number two (after losing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/barrycollins\/2026\/03\/02\/leaving-chatgpt-make-sure-to-do-this-before-you-cancel\/\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> 1.5 million users). Nevertheless, ChatGPT remains one of the most popular apps in the world, hitting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/02\/27\/chatgpt-reaches-900m-weekly-active-users\/\"><span>900 million<\/span><\/a><span> weekly active users in late February, with 50 million paying subscribers. As much as it might generate controversial headlines, it doesn\u2019t look set to disappear any time soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>How do millions of users reconcile the use of OpenAI\u2019s tools, while knowing that the company is aiding the US government as it embarks on aggressive foreign wars and increasingly authoritarian domestic policy? Or that it reportedly aided Israeli targeting in Gaza, alongside its partner Microsoft? Or that generative AI continues to have a significant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/66031\/1\/environmental-cost-chatgpt-climate-crisis-fitness-plans-grocery-lists\"><span>environmental impact<\/span><\/a><span>, despite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/earth.org\/media-shied-away-from-climate-coverage-in-2025-despite-increased-reader-interest\/\"><span>declining<\/span><\/a><span> media coverage of climate issues?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The easy answer is: ChatGPT is simply so useful, and so widespread, that most people are willing to look the other way. Despite refusing to cross its \u201cred lines\u201d with the DoW, Anthropic, the most obvious alternative, is deeply tangled up with the US military, and was \u201ccentral\u201d to the initial strike on Iran via a partnership with the Peter Thiel-founded Palantir (although this may be breaking down thanks to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/palantir-faces-challenge-remove-anthropic-pentagons-ai-software-2026-03-04\/\"><span>pushback<\/span><\/a><span> from the Pentagon)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Palantir has also been working with the UK government to \u201c<\/span><span>transform lethality on the battlefield\u201d as well as being awarded a seven-year, \u00a3330 million contract with the NHS in 2023. This shows how difficult it is to separate ourselves from certain AI systems even if we <\/span><em><span>want <\/span><\/em><span>to \u2013\u00a0a phenomenon known as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/68862\/1\/not-everyone-wants-to-use-ai-but-do-we-still-have-a-choice\"><span>consent collapse<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are a few alternatives to the major AI apps, of course, like the Chinese model <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/65964\/1\/deepseek-r1-did-china-just-win-the-ai-arms-race-1-trillion-us-stock-openai\">DeepSeek<\/a>, or Le Chat, a chatbot designed by the French company Mistral to adhere to strict EU guidelines. Often, though, these come with their own concerns about safety, security, and bias, or they\u2019re simply not as powerful as their more established counterparts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Then, there\u2019s the cost of leaving a tool (like OpenAI) that already \u2018knows\u2019 you and how best to serve your needs. This could be seen as a version of what the tech critic Cory Doctorow calls \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/69360\/1\/slop-enshittification-2025-internet-implode-shumon-basar-gunseli-yalcinkaya\"><span>enshittification<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d, where platforms lure you in, then make the cost of leaving so high that they can make the product worse in the knowledge that users will stay. But in this case,\u00a0 instead of ruining your experience with ads and slop, the system is eating away at your conscience while holding you hostage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When all\u2019s said and done, boycotting AI tools is a personal decision, even if it <\/span><em><span>is <\/span><\/em><span>tangled up in big political questions. But it&#8217;s worth being mindful of the individuals, organisations, and aims you\u2019re serving when you pay for another month of ChatGPT, so you can at least make an informed decision.
